    ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: TURKEY’S NEW FOREIGN POLICY ORIENTATION, A THREAT TO THE WEST? Elnigar Iltebir, Ph.D., 2015 Directed by: Professor I.M. Destler, Maryland School of Public Policy, University of Maryland College Park Turkey, a staunch US ally during the Cold War, experienced a transformation of its domestic and foreign policy in the last decade. It pursued a more independent foreign policy in the neighboring region, leading the critics to charge Turkey with abandoning the Western alliance and to question its commitment to strategic partnership with the United States and the EU. This dissertation uses a series of case studies on Turkey’s foreign policy in the Middle East and the Eurasia region to answer the question of whether the recent changes in Turkish foreign policy represent a fundamental reorientation of the country away from the Western alliance and to examine the dominant factors driving Turkish foreign policy during this period. The study concludes that Turkey’s foreign policy transformation in the last decade represents a significant change in the direction of autonomy, but not a fundamental reorientation of the country away from the West. The study also finds that while international factors played an important role in preparing the ground for Turkey’s foreign policy change, domestic factors, particularly Turkey’s economic interests, its new foreign policy elite and their vision, and Turkish public opinion, have been the main drivers of its foreign policy change.     Jewish Historical Studies, volume 40, 2005 Breaking the codes: Jewish personnel at Bletchley Park MARTIN SUGARMAN If students of the Second World War were to be asked which single organization contributed most to the defeat of the Axis forces between 1939 and 1945, many might agree that it was the code breakers at Bletchley Park Government Code and Cipher School (BP GC&CS), forerunner of Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ).1 On the basis of enemy messages decoded at BP, strategic decisions were made by Allied leaders which significantly altered the course of the war and saved count less lives. Established in 1938 as a branch of the Foreign Office, and leaning on previous experience, the part played by the staff at BP was revealed in 1974 in F. W. Winterbotham's book The Ultra Secret. The intelligence obtained from the codebreaking was called Ultra, and such information was passed only to the most senior Allied commanders in the field, in case the Germans realized their codes had been broken and changed them. Since then a small library of publications has appeared on the subject,2 as well as two significant films3 and several television documentaries. GC&CS was jokingly known to the staff as the 'Golf Club and Chess - - Society' a good cover name and had originally been founded at the end of the First World War. BP was known as Station X for a short time (the term was later used to describe any listening station, wherever located). As radio signals would have revealed the codebreaking school's location and made it a target for bombers, the radio station was moved away from BP soon after the outbreak of war.

Best, Ben Nathans CHAPTER 8: OMBUDSMAN OF THE WORLD Does the Soviet dissident movement belong to the broader history of youth protest that enveloped much of the industrialized world in the 1960s? This notion has tempted historians of ideas and international relations alike. From Paris and Berlin to Prague and Moscow (and in one version, in Berkeley and Beijing as well), it has been argued that a new generation of “sophisticated rebels” developed an “international language of dissent,” a “lingua franca of protest,” an “international dissident culture,” leading in 1968 to a “global disruption.” 1 ------------------------------------ 1 H. Stuart Hughes, Sophisticated Rebels: The Political Culture of European Dissent, 1968-1987 (Cambridge, 1990), makes a relatively restrained case for a shared culture of protest that was “sophisticated in the sense of recognizing realistic limits and frequently defying conventional Nathans/From the Other Shore/p.2 For Soviet dissidents, something more than a shared language or a set of transnational family resemblances was at work.

    Discography Of The Blue Note Label Blue Note was started in New York City in 1938 by Alfred W. Lion. Blue Note recorded jazz only. The following history of the Blue Note record label is from the Blue Note Website (bluenote.com). “In 1925, 16-year old Alfred Lion noticed a concert poster for Sam Wooding's orchestra near his favorite ice-skating arena in his native Berlin, Germany. He'd heard many of his mother's jazz records and began to take an interest in the music, but that night his life was changed. The impact of what he heard live touched a deep passion within him. His thirst for the music temporarily brought him to New York in 1928 where he worked on the docks and slept in Central Park to get closer to the music. On December 23, 1938, Lion attended the celebrated Spirituals to Swing concert at Carnegie Hall. The power, soul and beauty with which boogie woogie piano masters Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis rocked the stage gripped him. Exactly two weeks later, on January 6 at 2 in the afternoon, he brought them into a New York studio to make some recordings. They took turns at the one piano, recording four solos each before relinquishing the bench to the other man. The long session ended with two stunning duets. Blue Note Records was finally a reality. The label's first brochure in May of 1939 carried a statement of purpose that Lion rarely strayed from throughout the many styles and years during which he built one of the greatest jazz record companies in the world.
