January 2005 Citation: KVRI Burbot Committee. 2005. Kootenai River/Kootenay Lake Conservation Strategy. Prepared by the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho with assistance from S. P. Cramer and Associates. 77 pp. plus appendices. Conservation strategies delineate reasonable actions that are believed necessary to protect, rehabilitate, and maintain species and populations that have been recognized as imperiled, but not federally listed as threatened or endangered under the US Endangered Species Act. This Strategy resulted from cooperative efforts of U.S. and Canadian Federal, Provincial, and State agencies, Native American Tribes, First Nations, local Elected Officials, Congressional and Governor’s staff, and other important resource stakeholders, including members of the Kootenai Valley Resource Initiative. This Conservation Strategy does not necessarily represent the views or the official positions or approval of all individuals or agencies involved with its formulation. This Conservation Strategy is subject to modification as dictated by new findings, changes in species status, and the completion of conservation tasks. 2 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The Kootenai Tribe of Idaho would like to thank the Kootenai Valley Resource Initiative (KVRI) and the KVRI Burbot Committee for their contributions to this Burbot Conservation Strategy. What's the Deal with Flathead Lake and Lake Trout
PO Box 7186 Missoula, MT 59807 (406) 543-0054 PO Box 638 Kalispell, MT 59903 (406) 260-1198 What anglers should know about Flathead Lake, lake trout, and native trout Are lake trout the main reason native bull trout and cutthroat trout are disappearing from Flathead Lake and the Flathead River and its Middle and North forks? Yes. Biologists agree that the primary culprit in the precipitous decline in bull trout and cutthroat trout in the Flathead system the last 20 years is predation from an expanding population of non-native lake trout in Flathead Lake. How can lake trout in Flathead Lake be harming bull and cutthroat trout in the river? Biologists have long known that most of the bull trout and a portion of the cutthroat trout found in the main Flathead River, as well as in its North and Middle Forks, are migratory and they spend part of their lives in Flathead Lake. They move to the river to spawn and spend the first few years of their lives rearing in tributaries, before descending to the lake where they fall prey to or are otherwise outcompeted by voracious lake trout. So, what is the status of bull trout and cutthroat trout in the Flathead system? Based on annual counts of spawning redds and historical angling data, it is clear that the bull trout population is a fraction of what it was historically. This is a primary reason the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed this fish species as “threatened.” Absolute numbers on cutthroats are hard to come by, but based on limited field data and anecdotal information it appears their numbers are also drastically reduced. -

This translocationwas to assistin recoveryof the endangeredSelkirk population. For all translocatedcaribou combined,estimated annual survivalrates rangedfrom 0.65-0.94 and wereconsistent with declining established populations. No differences(P > 0.10) in survivalwere foundbetween male and femalecaribou or be- tweenmountain and northernecotypes. Causes ofdeath included unknown (n = 14), pre- dation(n = 7), other(n = 4), and human-caused(n = 2), withsummer accounting for the greatestproportion (53o/o). Emigrationof 7 mountainecotype animals also was a loss to the population. -

FOREWORD Most travelers who have driven through eastern Washington have seen a geologic and scenic feature that is unique-nothing like it is to be found anywhere else in the world. This is the Channeled Scab land, a gigantic series of deeply cut channels in the erosion-resistant Columbia River basalt, the rock that covers most of the east-central and southeastern part of the state. Grand Coulee, with its spectac ular Dry Falls, is one of the most widely known features of this ex tensive set of dry channels. Many thousands of travelers must have wondered how this Chan neled Scabland came into being, and many geologists also have speculated as to its origin. Several geologists have published papers outlining their theories of the scabland's origin, but the geologist who has made the most thorough study of the problem and has ex amined the whole area and all the evidence having a bearing on the problem is Dr. J Harlen Bretz.
