Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. Since then it has been categorized into "entertainments" by many commentators and, like Greene's other novels in this category , considered to be of little importance for clarifying the serious representation of the reality repeatedly found in his works . This critical unpopularity of this novel comes from its comic and optimistic aspects reminiscent of popular literature . On this point R. H. Miller thinks that the novel has "a concur- rent emphasis on melodrama and on action over character , and, in the tradition of melodrama, a fortunate outcome to the story."1) Brian Thomas, who gives the detailed analysis on the novel applying the structure of romance , states that it is "the most obviously romantic in conception ." 2) Besides the design of the plot and the conception , its jocular tone is another reason for the critical unpopularity. As well as Augusta's coarse jokes there are , as A. A. DeVitis points out, "self-referential and literary jokes which any careful reader of his novels would immediately catch ." 3) These jokes make the novel seem less serious.

TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT, MORALITY AND THE CATHOLIC NOVEL ANDREW MADIGAN United Arab Emirates University Travels with My Aunt (1969) has never received serious critical attention. It’s considered an anomaly, a curiosity, a lighthearted correction to the brooding Greene canon. Readers are often delighted because it appears so different from his other works, but no one places it in the pantheon. On first gloss, the novel may come across as diverting, fun and comic, but perhaps not sufficiently literary. Some may wonder why the author, with his singular taxonomy, chose to classify it as a ‘novel’ rather than an ‘entertainment’. Travels is a far weightier text than we imagined, however, and calls for a second opinion. Far from being incongruous with Greene’s more highly regarded novels, Travels is a continuation of his dominant themes, incidents and characterizations. The only major difference is tone; Greene offers the appearance of light comedy, but this is only a carapace for his usual brand of existential gloom. Even Paul Theroux, who admits that ‘comedy is very near to tragedy’, fails to see this, referring to ‘novels as diverse as ‘‘Travels With My Aunt’’ and ‘‘The Heart of the Matter,’’ giddiness on the one hand, gloom on the other’.1 Theroux’s quick dismissal of the novel as merely ‘giddy’ reflects the conventional wisdom. A close reading of the text, however, reveals a darkness, rigor and gravity that scholars and critics have overlooked. Travels is the inversion, the negative, of Greene’s other major novels.

    ABSTRACT Title of Document: EROTIC TRANSGRESSION: SEXUALITIES AND COMPANIONSHIP IN GRAHAM GREENE’S FICTION Heather Moreland McHale, Ph.D., 2011 Directed By: Professor John Auchard, Department of English This dissertation examines the role of sexuality in Graham Greene’s fiction. Instead of compartmentalizing Greene’s description of sex as an element of his Catholic perspective, this study reverses this view and argues that sexuality is at the center of Greene’s spiritual and moral life. Greene examines facets of sexuality that are often considered perverse or aberrant; his encompassing view of sexual life informs the political, moral, and religious issues of his novels. Key texts include The Man Within (1929), The End of the Affair (1951), The Quiet American (1955), Travels with My Aunt (1969), The Human Factor (1978), and Monsignor Quixote (1982), as well as selected short stories. These texts, as well as Greene’s autobiographies and travel writings, reveal a performative, polymorphous, and conflicted sexuality. The chapters of this project discuss sexuality of pain; scopophilia and exhibitionism; the role of fertility and sterility; confession and sexual talk; and the relationships between men. Ultimately, Greene’s evolving depictions of sexuality assume a central role in his work and become the most important way that his characters make meaning in a postwar, post-Eliot world. Rather than accept the view of modern life as a wasteland, Greene reinvests it with drama, danger, and existential importance through his exploration of sexuality. His interest in pain, scopophilia, adulterous or triangular relationships, and other forms of unusual sexuality simultaneously normalize these forms by suggesting that they are functional parts of erotic life, and present a radical view of what normative life really is.

DOMBROWSKI N the journal of his travels in the Congo, In Search of a Character, Greene speaks of Joseph Conrad's "heavy I hypnotic style," and deplores the "poverty" of his own.1 While Greene's style is unquestionably plainer than that of Conrad, it hardly suffers from "poverty." Richard Hoggart describes it as "nervous, vivid, astringent";- Ron• ald Bryden calls it "superb, spare, unmistakeable."3 Indeed, even in the stark, direct novels of Greene's middle years — Brighton Rock (1938), The Power and the Glory (1940) and The Heart of the Matter (1948) — it is "vivid" and "unmistakeable." These distinctive qualities are not inci• dental, but arise from techniques directly related to the highly charged nature of Greene's approach to his subject matter. Although his last three novels — The Comedians (1966), Travels With My Aunt (1969) and The Honorary Consul (1973) — suggest that Greene is partly replacing intensity with a sense of life's absurdity, these later novels still employ many of the techniques of the more intense and disturbed novels. The intensity projected in the novels, and reflected in the techniques to be examined, arises in part from Greene's conception of a world of violence or incipient violence,* a world moreover whose every action is imbued with trans• cendent significance. Of Somerset Maugham Greene writes, "Rob human beings of their heavenly and their infernal importance, and you rob your characters of their individ• uality" (CE p. 204). "Individuality" aside, Greene impresses on the reader the metaphysical significance of his own characters, often in a specifically Catholic framework, of 30 THEO Q.
