Research in Progress

"Guo Pu's (276-324 CE) Flight South" (Planning). The second project is one which will use Guo Pu’s poetry and a journal he maintained which documented his frantic flight south leading 100 other villagers. In this journal, the Yi Donglin (“Alternate Caves and Forests”), he used the Yijing (“Book of Changes”) to prognosticate a routes that would avoid both the barbarian and the raiding bandits in the mountainous regions. In both the fragmentary poetry he wrote then and in the cryptic journal he kept, he mentions ancient towns and historic sites he passes, and the events which took place at these sites. My project, still nascent, will center on using GIS technology and close readings of the texts to determine exactly what his route was between his town in (the now no longer extant) Hedong to Danyang (also no longer there, but replaced by a thriving medium-sized city, ).

"Rewriting Science Fiction in Liu Cixin's Three Body Problem" (On-Going). Liu Cixin's trilogy, _Remembrance of Earth's Past_, changes the fabric of the science fiction imaginary, and the assumed "vision" of the collective future world that appears in SF stories by including characters in the stories whose cultural and historical background is decidedly Eastern, and not Western.

"Social Media and Experiential Learning" (On-Going). Getting students to engage in the language outside of the classroom can be challenging, but with the ever new and improving technologies, including social media, apps and smart phones, making languages relevant outside the classroom has become easier. Even during study abroad, students are sometimes reluctant or afraid to engage in the environment. We discuss ways we used social media apps to engage students in experiential learning while abroad, helping them immerse themselves and experience language learning outside the

Report Generated on July 16, 2018 Page 870 of 1526 classroom. We demonstrate activities we designed, and show student products using WeChat, Facebook, and YouTube from a study-abroad program to China in the summer of 2017. We talk about outcomes and effectiveness of these activities and apps, and some issues we encountered while abroad. Finally, we discuss implications of using technology to facilitate students’ intercultural communicative competence, and encourage experiential learning in both study abroad and traditional language programs.

"the Historical Narrative Poetry of Guo Pu (276-324 CE)" (On-Going). The first is to focus on the historical narrative poetry he wrote and tie in some of the research and methods I gained from the memory and trauma workshop I attended in October 2015. In my dissertation, I focused on poetry and prose written by several individuals at the sacking of the capital at by the “barbarian” Xiongnu (a.k.a. the Huns) in 311 and the subsequent fall of the Western , as a means of working through their collective grief and trauma, and asserting historical and cultural control over the lost territory. Then, as the refugees settled in the south, they once again used language and poetry to establish their authority over the new land in the south. For this new project, I am focusing on the historical narrative poetry Guo Pu wrote as a means of dealing with memory and trauma and recreating a history more favorable to the refugees during this point of crisis, and will also tie this in with the long tradition of historical poetry in early medieval China.
