A Sight to Behold SUNDAY, JUNE 5, 2016 MIDNIGHT RUNNING SHOES A SIGHT TO BEHOLD Rafael Bejarano aggressively guided Midnight Storm (Pioneerof the Nile) to the front from an outside post over heavily favored speedy invader Heart to Heart (English Channel) and never looked back in the >Win and You=re In= GI Shoemaker Mile S. at Santa Anita Saturday. A close second as the even- Midnight Storm money chalk in this race last year, the dark Benoit bay carved out splits of :22.68 and :46 with Heart to Heart tracking while about a length back in second. The GI Maker=s 46 Mile runner-up turned up the heat as they straightened for home, but Midnight Storm was still going strong and quickly swatted that one away. Tourist (Tiznow), fourth in the GI Woodford Reserve Turf Classic S., took up the fight and appeared to have dead aim, but Midnight Storm kept on finding Beholder | Benoit more in game fashion to register a career high. Cont. p4 Three-time Eclipse winner Beholder (Henny Hughes) took care of business as usual with a facile defeat of fellow champion IN TDN EUROPE TODAY Stellar Wind (Curlin) in Saturday=s GI Vanity Mile S. at Santa HARZAND BUCKS INJURY SCARE; WINS DERBY Anita. Harzand (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) gave his connections a AShe=s like family to me,@ Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens fright when pulling a shoe Saturday morning, but showed he said. AShe=s the best thing I ever have ridden, or I ever will ride. was none worse for the wear with a strong G1 Investec Derby I=m blessed to be on her back.@ win. Click or tap here to go straight to TDN Europe. The Spendthrift colorbearer broke on top, but happily conceded the advantage to longshot Lost Bus (Bring the Heat), running comfortably at that rival=s hip through extremely soft opening splits of :25.03 and :49.31. Seizing command at the three-eighths pole, Beholder rolled clear in the stretch as Stevens remained motionless and simply cantered home to another effortless victory, the 10th Grade I of her brilliant career. Stellar Wind, scrubbed on most of the way by Victor Espinoza, was 1 1/2 lengths back in second while making her first attempt since a tough defeat in last fall=s GI Breeders= Cup Distaff. AJust another great effort,@ Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella commented. AShe continues to amaze us all. There was a time when we didn=t think she=d go long. She seems to adjust to what we=re doing. I=m lucky to experience something that very few people in history have--to have a great horse this long. Good horses come along, and there are a few great ones, but to be great and stay great, it really is special. There=s something very special about her.@ Cont. p3 Midnight Storm became his sire’s newest G1 WINNER on Saturday, proving best over a top field of milers in the $400,000 Shoemaker Mile (G1) at Santa Anita. Frostwatch 2016 Kismet Cases produced: 125 Suggested retail: $26 Composition: White Bordeaux blend: 76% Sauvignon Blanc, 24% Semillon Harvest dates: Frostwatch Sauvignon Blanc-9/23/16, Frostwatch Semillon-10/10/16 Brix at Harvest: Sauvignon Blanc-24.5 brix, Semillon-23.0 brix Blend TA: 5.7 Blend Ph: 3.28 Alc: 14.8% Vineyard Sources: Both of the components for the blend come from Frostwatch Vineyard in the Bennett Valley Appellation, which is distinguished by its very long growing seasons, modest yields relative to other areas and full-flavored wines with good natural acidity. The mystery clones that comprise this consistently well- reviewed blend make unique and delicious wines in every vintage. Kismet means “fate or destiny” and that perfectly describes the fortuitous circumstances that led to our growing and vinification of this unique wine! Winemaking: The grapes were harvested separately and whole cluster pressed and then fermented utilizing indigenous yeast. The Sauvignon Blanc is usually one of our first harvests and the Semillon is always our last harvest. The Sauvignon Blanc was fermented in stainless steel and the Semillon was barrel fermented in neutral French oak. The wine was lightly fined for clarity and was bottled unfiltered on May 4th, 2017. Tasting Notes: Frostwatch Kismet is a proprietary blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. This White Bordeaux cuvee was originally based on 47 vines (plants later identified as unknown clones of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon), which were accidentally planted in our original Chardonnay block in 1997. After several years of segregating the fruit from those vines, and loving the resulting wine, we took cuttings from the plants and planted several acres of these unique clones.
