This week we will start learning about the Early Stone Age, or the Paleolithic Age.

Under Activity 1, you will find a video that will help in acquainting you with this period in history.

Under Activity 2 you will find the presentation I have prepared for this week. On the last page of this presentation, you will find the questions you have to answer in your notebooks. Enjoy!!

Before moving on with this week’s work, please go through these answers.

1. What qualities do the following finches have in common a) finch and warbler finch

They both eat food and have probing bills.

b) Large tree finch and vegetarian finch

They both have biting tips.

2. How do the following differ: a) Small ground finch and small tree finch

Small ground finch Small Tree Finch  Edge crushing  Biting tip  crushing bills  Grasping bill  Eats plant food mainly  Eats mainly animal food

1) Large tree finch 2) Small tree finch

4. Explain the title of the book. What does the letter T stand for in T. Rex? What is the Crater of Doom? The Letter T stands for Tyrannosaurus. A crater refers to a large depression formed on any surface. Here, the crater being discussed was formed due to an asteroid collision with Earth. This led to a great explosion which was responsible for the extinction of many species like dinosaurs. Hence it was called the crater of doom.

5. Find out what an asteroid is and write a little bit about it. (About 20 words or more, if you wish!) Asteroids are rocks that orbit the Sun, just like planets. However, they are much smaller than planets.

6. What made Alvarez think that an asteroid had collided with the Earth sixty- five million years ago? Alvarez found iridium on rocks in Italy, which is a metal found commonly in asteroids. He found deposits of this in other locations too. However, it was the discovery of a giant crater in 1991 which helped prove his hypothesis.

7. Trace the steps that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs after the collision. After the asteroid hit the Earth, it led to a series of chain reactions. The explosion caused various types of material to be thrown up in the air. Along with this, smoke and dust particles enveloped the Earth in a thick cloud. Plants were not able to perform photosynthesis in the absence of sunlight. They perished, as did herbivores dependent on the plants. Eventually even carnivores like the T-Rex perished since their source of dependence (herbivores) had also disappeared.
