Uta Barth Presents her Work in a Free Public Lecture Wednesday, February 22, at 7:00 PM, Fath Auditorium, Cincinnati Art Museum Cincinnati, OH—FOTOFOCUS, a nonprofit organization championing photography, announces the re-launch of the Lightborne Lecture and Visiting Artist Series as the FOTOFOCUS Lecture and Visiting Artist Series, sponsored by Lightborne, Inc. Wednesday, February 22, at 7:00 PM, FOTOFOCUS presents acclaimed photographer Uta Barth, the spring 2012 FOTOFOCUS Lecturer and Visiting Artist, speaking about her work in a free lecture at Fath Auditorium, Cincinnati Art Museum. Reservations are not required, but early arrival is recommended. The parking fee is $4. Free parking is available for Cincinnati Art Museum members. He is a founding editor of the local art journal X-TRA, and his articles appear regularly in Artforum and Flash Art. He has written catalog essays for such artists as Bas Jan Ader, Uta Barth, John Divola, James Welling, Jorge Pardo and Cyprien Gaillard. Tumlir is a member of the MFA faculty at Art Center College of Design, and has in the past taught at Otis, CalArts, USC, UCR and UCLA. This year he is visiting Washington University in St. Louis as the Wallace Herndon Smith Distinguished Professor of Art. His book LA Artland, a survey of contemporary art in Los Angeles co- written with Chris Kraus and Jane McFadden, was published by Black Dog Press in 2005. Hyenas Are…, a book on artist Matthew Brannon, was published by Mousse in 2011. Selections A-D 77 Group events and clippings by title 109 Group events without title / Organizations 129 Periodicals 149 Introduction In the context of my activity as an antiquarian bookseller I began in 1973 to acquire exhibition invitations/announcements and poster/mailers on painting, sculpture, drawing and prints, performance, and video. I was motivated by the quasi-neglect in which these ephemeral primary sources in art history were held by American commercial channels, and the project to create a database towards the bibliographic recording of largely ignored material. Documentary value and thinness were my only criteria of inclusion. Sources of material were random. Material was acquired as funds could be diverted from my bookshop. With the rapid increase in number and diversity of sources, my initial concept evolved from a documentary to a study archive project on international visual and performing arts, reflecting the appearance of new media and art making/producing practices, globalization, the blurring of lines between high and low, and the challenges to originality and quality as authoritative criteria of classification and appreciation. In addition to painting, sculpture, drawing and prints, performance and video, the Jean-Noël Herlin Archive Project includes material on architecture, design, caricature, comics, animation, mail art, music, dance, theater, photography, film, textiles and the arts of fire. It also contains material on galleries, collectors, museums, foundations, alternative spaces, and clubs. -
