journal of jesuit studies 1 (2014) 212-226 brill.com/jjs Catechization and Conversion A Comparison of Two German Jesuit Plays on the Life of St. Augustine Elizabeth Ellis-Marino Ph.D. candidate, Late Medieval and Renaissance Studies, University of Arizona [email protected] Abstract The conversion of large portions of the German-speaking world from Protestantism to Catholicism in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries is considered to be one of the successes of the European Counter-Reformation and of the Jesuits. However, Catholicization programs, especially those supported by the territorial governments, were not received without resistance. In both embattled and secure areas, the Jesuits viewed their schools as primary to their mission to reclaim Protestants and to solidify Catholic faith. Drama was one of the most visible ways that Jesuit teachers could reach the general populace for this purpose. Conversion and saints’ lives were common themes in Jesuit plays across Europe. One of the most popular of these plays which contributed to the process of Catholic confessionalization was the German Jesuit play Augustinus conversus by Jakob Gretser, first staged in the staunchly Catholic city of Ingolstadt. In the aftermath of an armed rebellion against the Counter-Reformation in the territory of Paderborn, the Jesuits staged a comedy by Augustinus Turranius which drew heavily on Gretser’s play. In staging a comedy about the adolescence of St. Augustine, the Jesuits expounded on the themes of conversion, redemption, and forgiveness without directly referring to the situation in Paderborn. In this paper, both plays are placed within the context of the cities in which they were composed and performed, and the religious struggles in both cities are considered in the light of the larger Jesuit missionary project of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. -

BRUCK Pontifical Academician At this commemorative Colloquium which is devoted to "Spectral Classification of the Future" it is fitting that we should speak about the life and work of the man with whom all modern spectral classification started, Father Angelo Secchi who died here in Rome a hundred years ago in February I878. At the time of his death the name of Secchi was renowned throughout the scientific world, and his early death in his 60th year came as a great shock to the whole astronomical com munity - in the same way in which the untimely death of Father Treanor in February of this year is being deplored by astronomers all over the world. Father Secchi was one of the great pioneers of astro physics, or "physical astronomy" as he used to call it, whose work ranged over the widest possible field. He made fundamental contributions to solar physics as well as to stellar spectro scopy and he also worked with considerable success in geophysics and meterology. For 28 years of his life Father Secchi was in charge of the Observatory of the Collegio Romano, the Roman College of the Society of Jesus, an observatory which he transformed into one of the world's best known and most respected scientific establishments. Secchi was an indefatigable worker. In spite of many distracting duties which were forced on him by his official position Secchi managed to publish in the course of his life some seven hundred publications in many of the leading scien tific periodicals of his time in France, Britain, Germany as well as Italy. -

This term designates first of all the act of 'confessing' or professing a par ticular faith; secondly, it indicates the content of that which is confessed or professed, as in the Augsburg Confession; finally then it comes to mean the group that confesses this particular content, the church or 'confession'. 2 The New Religious Orders I. The terms 'order' and 'congregation' in this period were not always clear. An order usually meant solemn vows, varying degrees of exemption from the local bishop, acceptance of one of the major rules (Benedictine, Augustinian, Franciscan), and for women cloister.A congregation indicated simple vows and usually subordination to local diocesan authority. A con fraternity usually designated an association of lay people, sometimes including clerics, organized under a set of rules , to foster their common religious life and usually to undertake some common apostolic work. In some cases confraternities evolved into congregations, as was the case with many of the third orders, and congregations evolved into orders. 2. Rejoice in the Lord By Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R. Archbishop of Newark June 18, 2021 / Vol. 2, No. 19 Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, On April 21 of this year, I offered reflections on the topic “Synodality: the long game of Pope Francis” during a webinar offering of the annual Cardinal Bernardin Common Cause lecture sponsored by Loyola University Chicago’s Hank Center for the Catholic Intellectual Heritage. Because the full “script” for this lecture is very long—probably too long for an online presentation, but certainly for this newsletter—I summarize it below. I hope that my reflections offer some helpful insights into the importance of the term “synodality,” which literally means “walking together,” both for the teaching of our Holy Father Pope Francis and for the life and ministry of the Church at all times but, perhaps especially today. Christians are called to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, but we never do this alone. We are fellow travelers, sojourners, with each other and with Christ Himself. We walk together in good times and in hard times, in rough weather and on clear, sunny days. We support and encourage each other, especially when one of us stumbles and falls. Synodality is, or should be, the way our Church journeys through time with open hearts, attentively listening to the needs of God’s people as they are expressed in gestures (often more than words) and in longing to see the face of God revealed in Jesus and in all of us, His missionary disciples. I invite you to reflect prayerfully on the understanding of synodality that Pope Francis has proposed (in continuity with his predecessors in the Petrine ministry). -

MORELAND† Christian Legal Thought is a much-anticipated contribution from Patrick Brennan and William Brewbaker that brings the resources of the Christian intellectual tradition to bear on law and legal education. Among its many strengths, the book deftly combines Catholic and Protestant contributions and scholarly material with more widely accessible sources such as sermons and newspaper columns. But no project aiming at a crisp and manageably-sized presentation of Christianity’s contribution to law could hope to offer a comprehensive treatment of particular themes. And so, in this brief essay, I seek to elaborate upon the treatment of the principle of subsidiarity in Catholic social thought. Subsidiarity is mentioned a handful of times in Christian Legal Thought, most squarely with a lengthy quotation from Pius XI’s articulation of the principle in Quadragesimo Anno.1 In this proposed elaboration of subsidiarity, I wish to broaden the discussion of subsidiarity historically (back a few decades from Quadragesimo Anno to the pontificate of Leo XIII) and philosophically (most especially its relation to Leo XIII’s revival of Thomism).2 Statements of the principle have historically been terse and straightforward even if the application of subsidiarity to particular legal questions has not. -

The Vatican is an independent nation, with its own national astronomical observatory, the Specola Vaticana (Vatican Observatory). As- tronomy has been supported at the Vatican since the 1582 reform of the calendar; the present-day Observatory has been in operation since 1891. The work of the observatory is divided between two sites, one in the pa- pal summer gardens south of Rome, Italy, and the other affiliated with the Steward Observatory at the University of Arizona, in Tucson, Arizona, USA. Research undertaken by current staff members ranges from cosmol- ogy and the study of galactic evolution to meteoritics and meteors. Given the stable funding provided by the Vatican, the Observatory has specialized in long-term mapping and cataloguing projects that would be difficult to mount under a traditional three-year funding cycle. These have included participation in the Carte du Ciel photographic map of the sky; the at- lases of spectra produced by its Spectrochemical Laboratory; surveys of star clusters and peculiar stars; and the cataloguing of meteorite physical properties. 1. Astronomy in the Holy See Before 1891 To the Christian church, the study of creation has long been supported as an act of worshipping the Creator. Astronomy was one of the seven subjects that made up the curriculum of the medieval universities, which were themselves founded by the Church.
