WINEMAKING At Atalon Napa Valley, we understand that winemaking is a mysterious combination of intuition and science. Everything depends upon an alignment between the land and climate, upon a deep awareness of the interplay between seasonal fluctuation and geographical features—from soil type to the slope of a hillside vineyard. WINEMAKER, BRIAN KOSI Brian Kosi, Winemaker for Atalon Winery, is a master blender known for crafting age-worthy wines, working exclusively with Cabernet Sauvignon from many prestigious Napa Valley appellations. His first vintage with Atalon was 2009, where he brings over 15 years of winemaking experience to the team. A graduate of the University of California – Davis, Kosi’s career includes positions at Acacia Vineyard, Opus One, Plumpjack Winery, Beaulieu Vineyard and Freemark Abbey. -

THE PLUMPJACK WINERY’S ESTATE VINEYARD is nestled in the nape of the Vaca Mountain range on the eastern side of the Napa Valley. The facility now home to PlumpJack Winery was founded in 1881. The main winery building, which is still in use, was completed in 1883. There have been vineyards at the Oakville site since the late 1800s. ANTHONY BIAGI, wine maker at PlumpJack, has been actively involved in the business and art of winemaking for more than a decade. A native Californian, Anthony has had a passion for wine since the age of ten, when he and his family helped some close friends who owned a vineyard and winery in Lodi. Formed in 1990 to lobby for the rights Winemakers of its members to freely produce, market and sell their products, we currently represent over 450 producers. of California Direct-to-consumer sales blossomed after the U.S. Supreme Court issued its ruling in Granholm v. Tasting Heald. Now consumers in 41 states have a broader choice in wine. .and it’s because FWC provided key funding and steered the litigation battle. FWC has worked to keep taxes and fees on wine from rising, created new wine sales opportunities like farmers markets and event permits, stopped vine-killing pests, pushed for smart water rules, fought misguided labeling, and lobbied to keep state alcohol law up-to-date on the use of technology. Our legislative and regulatory work is augmented by the trade and consumer tastings we organize for our members to help them succeed in a highly competitive marketplace. This is our 24th year hosting events in the state. FWC’s fi rst tasting was held in 1991 at the Sheraton Palace Hotel in San Francisco. Many of our members pour at our Bay Area tasting, as well as in Southern California. The wineries at these tastings are just as dedicated today as they were in the beginning to producing the fi nest wines they can. You’ll taste their passion captured in each bottle. -

Learning the vintner's art from the ground up By Roger Morris, DelawareOnline.com October 20, 2004 Amelia Morán Ceja met her husband, Pedro Ceja, when both of them were Mexicanborn teenagers whose families had immigrated to Napa Valley. As Hollywood might have it, both were working in the same vineyard as teens. Today, Amelia is president and chief ambassador for Ceja Vineyards, and Pedro and his winemaker brother, Armando, are coowners. But the Ceja story is more than just an Oprah moment. Located in the Carneros region of Napa and Sonoma, Ceja is a serious winery making excellent wines for highend prices. Although they have been growing their own grapes since 1988, winemaking did not start until 1999. Energetic and fasttalking, Amelia told participants in a wine dinner at Corner Bistro in Brandywine Hundred recently that as a 12yearold just arrived from Mexico, she "fell in love with merlot grapes being harvested near what is now the Robert Mondavi property" and knew she wanted to some day be in the wine business. Having lived in a village in Jalisco state with no electricity or running water, she went on to graduate from college, as did the Ceja brothers. Husband Pedro studied engineering still his day job while Armando took up enology and became a vineyard manager. In the early 1980s, the family bought its first 15acre plot for $400,000 and planted its first grapes. Today, Ceja makes a Vino de Casa house white blend and a red blend (each about $25 locally), merlot ($35), pinot noir ($50), syrah ($40), plus a chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon not featured at the tasting. -
