EYENT SCHEDULE Swift Spirit Overcomes InclementWeather for Swift National There was a lot to like about this year's National in Athens, Tennessee but it sure wasn't the AirYenture 20 | 3 weather. The best part as usual was seeing old friends and meeting new ones. Woodruff, SC At the Friday evening med we were pleased that McMinn County Mayor john Gentry and Couiriy Airport Cominitiee Cha;rinai'l David Crews were able to attend. These two gentlemen have been very suPPortive of Swift and a large part of our success in tetting our new facilities is due to them. We look forward to continued success with McMinn County in eventually completing our proiects. 2013 Reno Air Races ln order to pull off a Swift National at Athens it September I l-15, 2013 takes a lot of hard work to get the old FBO building and hangar suitable for occupancy. Pam and Jack Nunley along with Ken Coughlin really had a job to do since it had been two years since we last held National at Athens. We all owe them hearty thanks for all their hard work, late perseverance. All we need to do to succeed is to see be one of the best Swift National we [email protected] your smiling faces in Dayton next year. See you there! Fern and Lynda Villeneuve, longtime Swifters drove down from and it is always a pleasure to talk with them. Fern has a really interesting background in flying that started when he soloed a J-3 Cub in 1946...67 years ato. He joined the RCAF in 1950 and pro- ceeded with an incredible career with them that lasted 32 years. Some of you might recall the Golden Hawks (F-86s) from the late '50s and early '60s. lt was both an incredible and beautiful air show...and the leader was...yes, Fern Villeneuve in 1959 and 1960. Fern went on from there to earn the Air Force Cross for an exceptional bit of courageous airmanship in handling a hairy F-86 dead stick incident. Some of the aircraft Fern has flown include the Harvard (T-6), CT-33, Dehavilland Vampire, the Canadian F-86 Sabre, CF-100, CF-l0lB, and the CF- 104 Starfighter which he flew out of Air bases at Zweibrucken and Lahr in Europe. Fern has had many unique events in his life that earned him induction into the Aviation Hall of Fame at Reynolds, at Wetaskiwin, Alberta, in 2006. 13,000 hours in fighters and trainers probably make him the all time leader in missions/hours flown in the RCAF in that type aircraft. Think of that... | 3000 hours in fighters. That is a huge amount of hours when you do it an hour or two at a time. Fern is the only pilot in RCAF history to have been the leader of three different Squadrons...in the CT-33, CF- l0lB and the CF-104. Another honor is that Fern in 1997 became only one of two living people to ever have their image on Ca- nadian coins...the other...Queen Elizabeth. Pretty fast comPany for sure. It is indeed an honor to have Fern and his lovely wife Lynda as members of Swift. Quiet, unassuming and impeccably polite. Wonderful folks. Currently Fern is an advisor to who have restored a beautiful F-86 Golden Hawk and he still flies his Swift C-GLYN. They plan to be at Dayton next year which if you have not met them you will have the opportu- nity there. Editor Note: In talking with Fern I felt the same awe and respect for him as I did when I had the oPPortunity to meet and talk with Bob Hoover. An unanticipated pleasure. Mark Holliday made the trip from Colorado and it was great to see him up and around after his near fatal crash in the Fokker last year. He has had a very intensive rehabilitation program and fortunately is doing pretty well. Mark has one of the longest associations with Swift that goes back to the early '70s and has been one of our most stalwart pilots. Mark has flown hundreds of different type aircraft over the years anci of course has fionil ali the Swift modeis plus the Buckaroo and he aiso ferried the john- son Rocket (our earliest Swift prototype) from Florida to Athens. Mark has owned many Swifts over the years plus other aircraft as well...but now he is interested in selling some of his aircraft and per- haps some of his parts. lf interested give Mark a call. lt was a real pleasure on seeing one of our stal- wart swift pilots in Athens. Board Chairman's Report by Bill Kientz It was really fun seeing so many of our Swift members at Athens this y6ar. Despite the weather, we did have enough good flying weather to have some fun, participate in the contests and just do what we all like to do at these gatherings....enjoy all our Swift friends. I believe most of the attendees had the opportunity to see the new facility as it nears completion. Pick Freeman, the Swift project manater and contractor Tim Mabe have done well with this project. lt helps that Pick has a lot of experience in construction and knows how to get the most bang for the buck. Swift's dollars are being well spent. I must tell you that we all owe many thanks to Pam and Jack Nunley, Ken Coughlin, Scott Anderson and Paul and Sandy Marcandetti for their efforts in gettint the old FBO building in shape for our meeting. The place was in really poor condition as we hadn't been there in two years. They spent many long days and a few long nights tetting it clean enough for our meetings. Well done.

Jeanie Collins. We are sad to report that longtime and very special Swift member Jeanie Collins has taken a fall at home and due to her injuries has been moved to a full time care facility. We all know how much Jeanie has contributed over the years to make our gatherints a success. She and Dick have flown innumerable times from California to Athens to see old friends and to make new ones. Please keep Jeanie in your thoughts and prayers. You may send cards or letters to: Mrs. leanie Collins. 450 Minoca Road. Portola Valle),. CA 94028-7765. Your notes will be greatly appreciated. New Board Members. We were pleased that we had two well qualified volunteers who have agreed to serve on the Swift Board. ferry Kirby who recently retired is from Tennessee and has been a Swift member for over 3 decades. Jerry has a stront business background and will be well suited for our board as we move forward with our many projects. Scott Naumann is the other new board member and hails from Arroyo Grande, California (near San Luis Obispo). He and his wife Sandy own a 1950 Swift, N8l7CC which was originally N244lB but that number was lost when it went to Canada. They have put a lot of hours (over 600) on this polished Swift in the six years or so they have owned it and have equipped.it for IFR in order to get in and out of San Luis Obispo when the marine layer of clouds comes in. They have been on many trips including those to Oshkosh, Athens, Westover, Independence and others. One of the most memorable trips was the trekfrom Athens to San Luis Obispo in one d^,1..... | 6 hours in a Swift. Wow. Can anybody out there top thatl Scott brings a lot of experience and enthusiasm to the Board and is excited about contributing to Swift's future. Challenges...Funding. We have,hr:y';?3j::'fJi!'lr,.g up that will provide badly needed funding for Swift. First, we have a jrogram to sell bricks from the original Globe factory to our members and interested parties. This will be a major fundraiser rr Swift and we strongly encourage all to participate at some level. We plan to have a wall of honor made of bricks in the new ouilding that will highlight our tenerous Swift members. Since there are only 150 bricks from the old Globe factory we expect there will be more demand for them and we would like more substantial donations for them. Additionally, we will have addi- tional replica bricks for your purchase and all of these will go to make up a dramatic display in the new Swift facility. lf member participation is as good as we think it will be, this project will go a long way in getting us closer to our goal of the Phase Two Building (The Museum). Secondly, we have sold N327 | K which will greatly enhance our funds for the Swift facility. We now are looking for a good Swift via a donation/buy for a raffle next year. Please give it some thought... it is fully tax deductible and treatly helps Swift. Third - Roger Weber has offered to work on Grant funds for Swift. Roger is well qualified for this and has been successful over the years in getting Grants for non-profits such as Swift. Additionally, Bob Minter, AOPA Regional Man- ager is working a separate Grant opportunity for us. Success with these projects will allow us to complete our building projects and (very important) put more dollars into Swift operation funds. We will need each and every member to get behind these efforts....and...we can do it...together.

Donations: I would be remiss if I didn't mention the generous donations of Stan Price and Tracy Rhodes and Dick and Jeanie Collins. As you know Dave Carpenter worked out a plan for updated shelving which got Stan Price's interest. He found a source in Texas that would provide us their excellent used shelving for around $5,000. We said we would take it but then found out that Stan bought and donated it to us. All we have to do is provide the shipping. Many thanks to Stan for his tener- ous contribution. True Swift spirit. Tracy Rhodes has been revamping and energizing our Swift web site. Although his contract calls for only certain items, Tracy has gone well beyond that to completely upgrade our site. He has provided at least 5-6 times his contract value in tetting us going. lt is going to be a really terrific site. Tracy's support of Swift is greatly appreciated and I am sure you will love this new site. See the related article for the address. lt is dynamic and up to date. Another example of a Swifter helping Swift.

Dick and Jeanie Collins are well known in the Swift community and have been loyal Swifters for decades. They have made the trip from California in N80772 to Swift events at Athens, Sun n Fun, Oshkosh and Lake Elmo too many times to count. Conge- nial, friendly, supportive and most recently very generous in supporting the new Swift facility. everyone in Swift ^ ,Vifpu_ally the ' arorld knows and enjoys their company and we look forward to all their visits. Many thanks to aii Wfio are helping us meet our goals.

As announced, we have sold N327 | K which was donated by Mr. & Mrs. David Fox of Saline, Ml. We owe them many thanks since the sale funds will go toward our new facility. Generous contributions such as this are the lifeblood of Swift these days and we all appreciate the thoughts and loyalty to Swift. Along with contributions such as this goes a life membership in Swift. We can't totally repay the generosity but we do show our appreciation. Thank you. Executive Director Notes by Pom Nunley First- Please refer to page 5 for this years list of Swift National 20l3 award rriinners! We had a small but high quality group of Swifts here this year and the World of the Swift was very well represented. We want to thank all of you for making such a determined effort to get'to Athens this year and for helping out once you got here. The events seemed to go smoothly and I believe everyone had a great time. I also want to thank all the volunteers who ran the Swift Store, Registration and Concessions.
