The present volume conta ins firstly the Addenda and C of I bo D ictiona r orrigenda the y previously published , the

of ma inl so proofs which were read y in the colony, that

M S . i comparison with the original was mpossible . I n the second place it contains re -determinations of tones of certain words in the previous Dictionary, and in the third f I t place a number o words used in the Asaba dialect . must be understood that these latter by no means comprise the whole of the Asaba vocabulary ; words included in the previous

Dictionary are not reprinted here . on ha s The tones were noted the assumption , which since turned out to be incorrect, that they are four in number, high , R V I low , and upper and lower middle . eference to Part will show that by the study of phonograph records many more tones have been discovered . As , however , words pronounced according to the number notation adopted in this Dictionary to not appear be recognisable , even if they are absolutely e I I n accurat , have not hesitated to print my data here . a c of ertain number cases, material collected at an early stage of my tour was left unrevised , and in such , words are , as a rule , marked with accents only .

wa s I The whole of the material collected personally, and have made no attempt to incorporate material collected either by the C hurch M issionary Society or the R oman C atholic M to C ission at Asaba . A request addressed the hurch M issionary Society in 1910 for permission to study their I material wa s refused . mentioned the subject informally at R M a fi C . the oman atholic ission , but m de no de nite proposal I n view of the fact that comparatively little of my time is d to evoted linguistic research, it would have been impossible F iv PRE ACE . to e revise with due care material collect d by other people , and it is undesirable to include in any Dictionary data collected at different hands unless comparative unif ormity is obtained by careful revision . The main mass of the Dictionary refers to the Asaba in language , but certain cases words from the Hinterland and

of e from the east the Niger are included , as also c rtain words

- accidentally omitted from the O nitsha Awka Dictionary . Such words are shown by a lette r or other abbreviation in

m of brackets . The short ti e available for the collection material in the colony prevented me from examining in

of t detail many points interes . Thus g lenis is f ound

of a of in a certain number words , and the t ble consonants

of shows two or more variants the same consonant are in use .

The sound thus produced is almost indistinguishable from n and r . The distinction between this 1 and the other one is not made in the Dictionary .

The Asaba vowel so unds appear to be more complicated k than those of O a . This is possibly due to better opportunities for observation . L M PHONETIC E E ENTS . ix

a , which is found both long and short , is a very forward

d ca a soun , especially in such words as , j , where the consonant may be a front plosive . Q is extremely open ; Q appears to be slightly diph th onga ted with a preceding closed 0 .

9 D o is found after d , r , l , and g . is pronounced as though the d were cerebral , but its association with other consonants i I t shows that the vowel itself has the dist nctive value . is a tense vowel pronounced with the tip of the tongue raised .

0 so 0 is open , but less than the preceding ; is a very common sound and appears to be the same as French 0 in of e a u . This frequently is the first component a diphthong ,

e h . specially after m , , f before a

o is 0 a very close found in only a few cases , especially

I t a a G 0 . fter w . resembles the North erm n in boot u is a very o-like sound and is usually heard and written 0 a s until attention is directed to it . I 6 1, three varieties of open i are found , as in i, pg, 1, with diminishing degrees of Openness but as it is unnecessary to distinguish between them in order to differentiate words of ff di erent meaning they are all indicated with one symbol . The very open i in l i might almost be described as a very na rr ow e , resembling a French e . A ll I bo verbs prefix a or e to the root consonant to form the present tense and also with the verbal form used with

C . the Negative , ontinuative , and Future Auxiliaries a is used with all verbs of which the root vowel is a or an open vowel e with all verbs of which the root vowel is e or a close vowel . This law enables us to sa y that the open u and Open i m entioned above are in really u and i and not close 0 and e . Any monosyllabic verb without indication of vowel length has not been revised , and is of uncertain vowel quality . With regard to the system of transliteration it should be noted that except in monosyllables the final e is usually if not

a I I I invari bly open . The formative vowel noted in Part has been omitted in the present Dictionary in vie w of the fact that the use of a or e depends upon a very simple law a is M N PHONETIC ELE E TS .

of is or used where the first vowel the verb a an open vowel , e where it is e or a closed vowel . O wing to this diff erence of the formative vowel we find that the pronoun in the third

of of th e o is o person singular the a verbs is Q , verbs , and the initial vowel of the infinitive of the a verbs appears to be

of . open , while that the e verbs is closed The data at my disposal make it somewhat uncertain whether the final e of monosyllabic verbs follows the rule of 3 rd i mentioned above . Thus the vowel the person s ngular

to h e 0 on appears , and the root vowel of the verb makes the

of on ear the impression closeness in the phonograph record , the other hand , the vowel is distinctly open . Final e in other words appears to vary in sound ; it is

to a sometimes distinctly Open , but sometimes seems st nd

N o e h a s midway between open and closed . syst matisation been attempte d with such words . NE TO S .

The Dictionary wa s prepared in the colony on the a ssump tion that four tones should be distinguished ; this assumption is shown by the phonograph records to be incorrect (see V I Part ) . The high tone is shown by or by a small 1 above the vowel ; the l ow tone by or a small 4 ; the middle tone

or of by , in the case the words collected towards the end f o 2 3 . the tour, by a small (upper middle) or (lower middle) I n monosyllabic words especially the high tone is usually short ; at the end of the word marks a short vowel with abrupt close ; where the tone is not given it may be W assumed to be high . here numbers in brackets follow a word they indicate the tones upon the successive syllables . C two ompound tones , usually rising, are indicated by the ‘ (ld components thus .
