COMMUNITY OUTREACH The Arts Commission is proud to begin work in the field of Creative Placemaking, funded through a National Endowment for the Arts Our Town grant. As identified in the Strategic Plan for Arts and Culture, this work will begin in four of the city’s eight original neighborhoods. Through community conversations and collaborations, Arts Commission team members are developing best practices with the intent to begin projects in 2016.

2015 marked a new chapter for the Art Loop as a consolidation of similar programs offered by The Arts Commission in previous years. The Art Loop takes place the third Thursday of each month in partnership with many arts and culture venues as well as downtown businesses. The Art Loop features standardized public bus transportation connecting venues and offering riders the chance to witness creativity in our city from a new vantage point.

We were thrilled with the participation and community support for Artomatic 419. Over 400 literary, performing and visual artists showcased their creativity and provided a unique arts experience- the largest in NW and SE . We thank the artists for sharing their talents, the volunteers for sharing their time, and the supporters of the arts who attended this fantastic event.

YOUTH ENGAGEMENT The Young Artists At Work program engaged 40 apprentices for a summer of arts experiences rooted in individual creativity, team collaboration, and job skill development. Projects included a mural for the hallway in the , a mural for an exterior wall at Soul City Gym, and a music video created under the guidance of Radiant City.

EDWARD ZRAIK The Ninth Congressional District Art Exhibition has celebrated the talents of high President school artists in our region since 1983. Along with Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, Board of Trustees The Arts Commission applauds the 49 artists who participated in this year’s exhibition. MARC D. Photo | Young Artists at Work Program ARTOMATIC 419! Artomatic 419! 2015 re-enlivened the former Lamson Department Store at 600 Jefferson in Downtown Toledo. ARTISTS Over 400 visual, literary and performing artists showcased their talents during the event. More than 100 volunteers pulled together to make the largest non-juried, multimedia arts experience throughout the NW Ohio and SE Michigan region available for our community to experience. The The Arts Commission advocates to Inspire event space was open to the public on three consecutive Saturdays, April 11th, 18th, & 25th, plus Thursday, April 16 (Mud Hens Opening Day) and Sunday, April 19 (419 Day). A few highlights featured at the event included: AfroMatic: a Vibrant Community in Toledo. We believe Natural Hair Expo, live set of the Detroit Party Marching Band, first ever Brunchomatic 419!, Mfinity Fashion Show, Celebration of Creative Communities event and on- support for artists and creatives in our region going attractions of the Hands On Area for live demos, workshops, group art projects, and children’s activities, Selfie at #Artomatic419, “Bicycle Wheel Expo, inspired by Peter Gendron” curated by Dustin Hostetler, and Artomatic is essential to the greater Toledo area’s 419 Cinematheque curated by Reel. ARTS ENTREPRENEURIAL INITIATIVE (AEI) PROGRAM Launched in spring of 2015, The UpTown Arts revitalization, sense of place, and commitment Entrepreneurial Initiative (AEI) is a small business development program designed for creative entrepreneurs in need of training and capital to launch or sustain arts enterprises, including craft- and food-based, fashion, to a brighter future. Through collaboration and entertainment and fine-arts businesses. The AEI Program was a great opportunity for The Arts Commission to build upon the impact of the Well Fed Artists Workshop Series made possible through Small Business Administration community conversation we achieve innovative funding in 2012 and 2013. The AEI program was a joint effort of The Arts Commission, UpTown Association, Toledo Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) and ECDI. This two year program was made possible by a grant awarded from the Kresge and Surdna Foundations to enhance neighborhood and revitalization the commercial district of UpTown. For the 2015 calendar year, The Arts Commission and partners hosted two informational sessions, four topic-specific training sessions, two local entrepreneur panel presentations and a three part business model discovery workshop, connecting with over 65 creative entrepreneurs in attendance. Creative entrepreneurs were linked with partner organizations to obtain information and assistance as follows: financial literacy and credit repair programs available through Toledo LISC and their Financial Opportunity Centers, small business loans through the ECDI and available rental properties available in the UpTown District.

Photo by Kara Fallon Artomatic 419! 2015 YOUNG ARTISTS AT WORK YOUTH In its 21st year, YAAW engaged 40 youth apprentices (including two senior apprentices), ages 14-18, for an intensive, six-week employment experience in the arts focused on job skill development, graciously hosted Inspiring young artists ensures a greater for a sixth year in the ’s Center for the Visual Arts. Our programs have inspired thousands of Toledo CONGRESSIONAL The Arts Commission celebrates the talents of artists in our regional high schools through the Ninth Congressional District Art Exhibition program. For 2015, youth to explore their individuality while working more than 49 artworks representing nine high schools were entered into the competition with 25 artworks receiving awards from sponsoring businesses and higher education partners. The exhibition continues as a team to change their city for the better to engage young artists from Erie County and parts of Cuyahoga County. The exhibition travels to hang at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio for a month after the Toledo exhibition at Fifth Third Center at One and to develop more fully into thoughtful and Seagate in downtown Toledo. FORT INDUSTRY: THE I-280 PARK MAINTENANCE BUILDING MURAL To fulfill the vision of completing a large-scale mural project and a second work of art on the I-280 corridor visible from the interstate, The Arts Commission identified the City of Toledo’s Park Maintenance building, located at 1615 Ketcham as a prime location. The building just north of the Veterans Glass City Skyway is viewed by over 57,000 vehicles every day as they travel through Toledo along the interstate. In 2013, The Arts Commission launched a Request for Qualifications and received 74 packets from all over the world. Brooklyn resident and Chelsea, Michigan native, Molly Dilworth was selected as the winner of the commission. Dilworth also conducted a workshop and critiques with The Arts Commission’s Young Artists at Work apprentices. The project was completed July 10th, 2015. The total budget for the project was $122,297 with $60,000 of this provided by ART IN private donations.

PUBLIC ONGOING IN 2015

COLLINGWOOD BOULEVARD PUBLIC ART PROJECT PLACES The Arts Commission is coordinating with the City of Toledo’s Engineering Services Department to install a public art project in coordination with the resurfacing work that is in process for Collingwood Blvd. The commissioned artwork will be sited along Collingwood, between Ashland and Central, utilizing the islands that have been identified in the plans for the recently completed road project. The design review process, which was initiated in late 2011, resulted in the selection of a design consisting of 5 large pieces by California artist, Mark Lere. The Arts Commission has made multi-year allocations toward this project in 2012 and 2013, and anticipates the artwork will be installed in October 2016.

THE TOLEDO GATEWAY PROJECT Continuing the initiatives set forth in the 2005 Toledo ArtNET study and the Toledo Gateway Initiative as identified in the 20/20 Plan, The Arts Commission is working with the City of Toledo, The Ohio Department of Transportation, AECOM (formally URS) and a number of other parties on infrastructure enhancement and redesign for the proposed Anthony Wayne Trail, Erie and Lafayette Gateway Project.

In 2013, The Arts Commission published a request for qualifications, which generated over 130 submissions from all over the world. Through an extensive design review and interview process, the design team of Laura Haddad and Tom Drugan of Seattle, Washington, has been selected from the pool for this exciting new project. The design phase of the project is expected to be complete in March of 2016 with construction starting in 2017. Funding for the build phase of the infrastructure enhancements come from state and federal sources and totals $460,000.

The work is expected to start in September 2015.

WATCHING FOR THE WIND Located at the Toledo Botanical Gardens, these three floating kinetic sculptures were repaired and re-painted. Project completed – August of 2015.

2015 ASSESSMENT The collection will undergo another extensive assessment this fall to identify conservation and maintenance to be conducted in 2016.

EDUCATION PROGRAMS /ACTIVITIES

CITY OF TOLEDO PUBLIC ART MAPPING PROJECT The Arts Commission contracted with The Sidwell Company to develop a data driven, web based, and interactive map of the City of Toledo’s public art collection. The map includes locations of all of Toledo’s public art holdings, artist designed bike racks and murals. This powerful tool can not only be utilized to explore the collection but also adapted to specific purposes such as children’s activities. The map was launched in September of 2015.

Photo by Kara Fallon | Art Loop ART LOOP The Art Loop is a consolidation and expansion the Art Walk, Gallery Loop, and SoundTrek programs, into a year-round program, taking place on the third Thursday of each month. Historically, Gallery Loops and Art Walks have attracted the participation of 25+ venues.

The Art Loop features a standardized public bus transportation routes connecting significant arts and cultural venues, such as the Toledo Museum of Art, Valentine Theatre, Toledo School for the Arts, and concentrations of artists’ studios and arts galleries in the area. Loops will be supported by way- finding signage and/or public art placements, printed and online materials, and an app for mobile accessibility. Art Loops will: create linkages among community assets with the utilization of public art, public transportation, and coordinated marketing of arts and cultural activities with non-arts sectors, encourage exploration of alternative transportation options, and integrate underserved populations and areas of the community into established, expanding programs.
