It’s a sublime fall day, cold enough for one jacket but not two and framed by a cloudless sky emitting brilliant blue. The air is thick and can- dy tinted. It’s our mutual feeling that a day like this is almost always nostalgia invoking. This nostalgia as it happens is more than just an abstract feeling for Battaglia. Later this day she has plans to go to the wedding of an old friend from back home. A friend who she met in highschool and had a crush on when she was thirteen, five years ahead of her at the time he walked the halls ordained with shiny jew- elry, orange trousers, and glistening gelled up hair. He asked her one day “Okay you want to know what elec- tronic music is?” and she said “Yes!” It was at this moment our young pro- ducer was introduced to the Chemi- cal Brothers, later through the same person hip hop groups like Cypress Hill. These artists played a huge part in influencing Catnapp to depart from her childhood experiences of more traditional music, and land where she exists now sitting at the cross section of pop, dance music, and hip hop. Operating in this space has become much easier and more fruitful since her move to Berlin a little over two years ago. In Argentina, at least when she was there, the same kind of mu- Lola by RossiPhoto sic was not being made. “There was some hip hop, like really classic na- tional hip hop in Spanish. But no one was doing breakbeat or what I wanted to do. So it was weird because I was not able to share lineups with any- one,” she explains. While those years coming up and not fitting the bill as a club act or a concert act were a lit- tle isolating Battaglia says the scene has grown exponentially since then. For immediate release: 10 December 2015 Homeshake (CAN) Announces Australian Tour In Support of Midnight Snack, Out Now on Strange Yonder The slacker-jazz, RnB virtuoso, Peter Sagar has finally announced he’ll make his debut visit to Australia under the guise of Homeshake, with his full band in tow in 2016. ++++ “There’s a sense of despondency on [Heat], with Sagar sounding vulnerable and bare.” – Consequence of Sound “Sagar just nails some phenomenally evocative choruses. He puts this really languid, lazy spin on the tightness that the rhythm sort of demands from the vocals. It makes you feel like you’re falling asleep, only to keep waking up a couple of seconds after each time.” – 4ZZZ FM “A jetlagged piece of lift-jazz meets drone-pop.” – DIY Mag “Midnight Snack plays like a trip back to the woozy, lust-fuelled R&B of the '90s.” – Exclaim! “[Heat] is an instantly enveloping track that breathes just a touch of life into a chilly soundscape.” – Diffuser.fm “Indie-pop comfort food.” – SPIN “I want to slow dance with a beautiful woman to this album, in its entirety.” – Someone on Facebook “Like jogging through an Alaskan oil field late at night, whilst the Borealis twinkles above, all psychedelic.” – Someone on Youtube December – while we’re poising our selves for the midnight snacks that go hand in hand with the festive season and its endless late nights, Christmas parties and festivals, one Canadian is poising himself to bring his Midnight Snack to Australia for the first time. Growing up in the freezing cold winter of Edmonton Alberta, Peter Sagar moved to the freezing cold winter of Montreal Quebec where he joined Mac DeMarco as his long-standing and endured a dizzying time of touring on the back of Rock and Roll Night Club and 2.

  • Mac Demarco 2 - Cd/Lp
MAC DEMARCO 2 - CD/LP When the then 21-year old Mac DeMarco released his debut Rock and Roll Night Club 12” just a short while ago in the Spring of 2012, it was accompanied by a barrage of bizarrely funny promo videos, wildly unhinged live performances and a not-so-subtle disparate range of promo photos. The glam facade was purely that, an image that was manufactured for fun to confuse the stiff and compartmentalizing world of indie music journalists. But it wasn’t all a jest, as that EP covered a whole range of music styles that were latent in the ex-Makeout Videotape frontman’s already impressive slough of cassette-only releases. The sincere and warm Mac who sang “Only You” was the same lipstick-wearing sleazoid that crooned “Baby’s Wearing Blue Jeans” and that suited him and his listeners just fine. Now, all of six months later, Mac is back with his first proper full length, Mac DeMarco 2. As opposed to RNRNC, “2” is a concerted effort to produce a cohesive work that show- cases Mac’s natural ability as a songwriter, singer and producer. With a new arsenal of recording gear, the fidelity has substantially improved without compromising the immediacy and organic quality of his prior releases under any monicker. The results are immediately 1. Cooking Up Something Good rewarding, from the warm “Cooking Up Something Good” to the heartfelt “My Kind of 2. Dreamin’’ Woman.” It’s obvious Mac is presenting himself musically in the most sincere way possible, 3. Freaking Out The Neighborhood no matter what happens in his wild videos or live shows.

A PAUPER OF POP: MAC DEMARCO, SOUND FIDELITY, AND THE POLITICS OF NOISE by Maxwell Stanley Hector Wainwright B.A., The University of British Columbia, 2013 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (English) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) October 2018 © Maxwell Stanley Hector Wainwright, 2018 The following individuals certify that they have read, and recommend to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for acceptance, a thesis/dissertation entitled: A Pauper of Pop: Mac DeMarco, Sound Fidelity, and the Politics of Noise submitted by Maxwell S. H. Wainwright in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in English Examining Committee: Dr. Kevin McNeilly Supervisor Dr. Ian Hill Supervisory Committee Member Dr. Judith Paltin Supervisory Committee Member !ii Abstract This thesis is a subcultural reading of Canadian singer-songwriter Mac DeMarco’s recording style. I examine how acoustic noise, crude production values, and do-it-yourself ethics exact symbolic and practical resistances to pop music hegemonies that privilege hi-fi sound and elite studio technologies. As an expression of what Dick Hebdige calls a “spectacular subculture,” I argue DeMarco’s self-taught recording style challenges technical standards in the recording arts, tastes underpinning the economy of popular music, and codes of masculinity in popular rock music. Borrowing from the work of Jacques Attali and Tony Grajeda, I explain how DeMarco’s “lo-fi” Makeout Videotape recordings use noise and distortion to symbolize and enact ruptures in procedural and aesthetic scripts that denounce non-professional music production.
