CHRISTIAN CROSS-OVER SONGWRITING 1 A Survey of Christian Cross-Over Songwriting Core Principles and Potential for Impact Paul Malhotra A Senior Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation in the Honors Program Liberty University Spring 2013 CHRISTIAN CROSS-OVER SONGWRITING 2 Acceptance of Senior Honors Thesis This Senior Honors Thesis is accepted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation from the Honors Program of Liberty University. ______________________________ John D. Kinchen III, D.M.A. Thesis Chair ______________________________ Michael Babcock, Ph.D. Committee Member ______________________________ Mr. Don Marsh, M.S. Committee Member ______________________________ Marilyn Gadomski, Ph.D. Assistant Honors Director ______________________________ Date CHRISTIAN CROSS-OVER SONGWRITING 3 Abstract A cross-over song has been defined as a song written by a Christian artist aimed at a mainstream audience. An understanding of the core principles of cross-over songs and their relevance in contemporary culture is essential for Christian songwriters. Six albums marked by spiritual overtones or undertones, representing a broad spectrum of contemporary cross-over music, were examined. Selected songs were critiqued by analyzing the album of origin, lyrical content, author’s expressed worldview, and level of commercial success. Renaissance art also provided a historical parallel to modern day songwriting. Recommendations were developed for Christian songwriters to craft songs with greater effectiveness to impact the culture while adhering to a biblical worldview. CHRISTIAN CROSS-OVER SONGWRITING 4 A Survey of Christian Cross-Over Songwriting An exploration of Christian cross-over music can provide an objective framework for evaluating songs and developing guidelines for Christian songwriters so they can enhance their effectiveness in communicating with their audiences. -

2. Case Study: Anime Music Videos
2. CASE STUDY: ANIME MUSIC VIDEOS Dana Milstein When on 1 August 1981 at 12:01 a.m. the Buggles’ ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ aired as MTV’s first music video, its lyrics parodied the very media pre- senting it: ‘We can’t rewind, we’ve gone too far, . put the blame on VTR.’ Influenced by J. G. Ballard’s 1960 short story ‘The Sound Sweep’, Trevor Horn’s song voiced anxiety over the dystopian, artificial world developing as a result of modern technology. Ballard’s story described a world in which natu- rally audible sound, particularly song, is considered to be noise pollution; a sound sweep removes this acoustic noise on a daily basis while radios broad- cast a silent, rescored version of music using a richer, ultrasonic orchestra that subconsciously produces positive feelings in its listeners. Ballard was particu- larly criticising technology’s attempt to manipulate the human voice, by con- tending that the voice as a natural musical instrument can only be generated by ‘non-mechanical means which the neruophonic engineer could never hope, or bother, to duplicate’ (Ballard 2006: 150). Similarly, Horn professed anxiety over a world in which VTRs (video tape recorders) replace real-time radio music with simulacra of those performances. VTRs allowed networks to replay shows, to cater to different time zones, and to rerecord over material. Indeed, the first VTR broadcast occurred on 25 October 1956, when a recording of guest singer Dorothy Collins made the previous night was broadcast ‘live’ on the Jonathan Winters Show. The business of keeping audiences hooked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, promoted the concept of quantity over quality: yes- terday’s information was irrelevant and could be permanently erased after serving its money-making purpose. -

Homeshake (CAN) Announces Australian Tour in Support of Midnight Snack, out Now on Strange Yonder
For immediate release: 10 December 2015 Homeshake (CAN) Announces Australian Tour In Support of Midnight Snack, Out Now on Strange Yonder The slacker-jazz, RnB virtuoso, Peter Sagar has finally announced he’ll make his debut visit to Australia under the guise of Homeshake, with his full band in tow in 2016. ++++ “There’s a sense of despondency on [Heat], with Sagar sounding vulnerable and bare.” – Consequence of Sound “Sagar just nails some phenomenally evocative choruses. He puts this really languid, lazy spin on the tightness that the rhythm sort of demands from the vocals. It makes you feel like you’re falling asleep, only to keep waking up a couple of seconds after each time.” – 4ZZZ FM “A jetlagged piece of lift-jazz meets drone-pop.” – DIY Mag “Midnight Snack plays like a trip back to the woozy, lust-fuelled R&B of the '90s.” – Exclaim! “[Heat] is an instantly enveloping track that breathes just a touch of life into a chilly soundscape.” – Diffuser.fm “Indie-pop comfort food.” – SPIN “I want to slow dance with a beautiful woman to this album, in its entirety.” – Someone on Facebook “Like jogging through an Alaskan oil field late at night, whilst the Borealis twinkles above, all psychedelic.” – Someone on Youtube December – while we’re poising our selves for the midnight snacks that go hand in hand with the festive season and its endless late nights, Christmas parties and festivals, one Canadian is poising himself to bring his Midnight Snack to Australia for the first time. Growing up in the freezing cold winter of Edmonton Alberta, Peter Sagar moved to the freezing cold winter of Montreal Quebec where he joined Mac DeMarco as his long-standing and endured a dizzying time of touring on the back of Rock and Roll Night Club and 2. -
RELIENT K CELEBRATES 10Th ANNIVERSARY with the BIRD and the BEE SIDES EP, SCHEDULED for JULY 1St RELEASE on GOTEE RECORDS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 30, 2008 RELIENT K CELEBRATES 10th ANNIVERSARY WITH THE BIRD AND THE BEE SIDES EP, SCHEDULED FOR JULY 1st RELEASE ON GOTEE RECORDS 26-Track EP Includes 13 Brand New Songs Plus Career-Spanning Collection Of B-Sides; Online Scavenger Hunt Kicks Off June 16th, Giving Fans A Chance To Download Additional B-sides For Free Band Co-Headlines Vans Warped Tour ’08, Kicking Off June 20th Relient K’s The Bird and the Bee Sides – scheduled for July 1st release by Gotee Records – is by far the most ambitious EP of the band’s career. In fact, with 26 songs (including 13 brand new ones) and a running time of 70 minutes, it may be one of the most ambitious EPs ever released, period. And, as improbable as it sounds, there’s still more: Prior to street date, Relient K will launch an online scavenger hunt that will give fans a chance to download numerous b-sides that will not be included on the disc. The hunt begins June 16th at the band’s MySpace site and will continue through June 30th. For additional information and clues, visit: http://www.myspace.com/relientk The band typically releases an EP between studio albums. So following Five Score And Seven Years Ago – which debuted at #6 on The Billboard 200 in 2007, becoming Relient K’s highest charting album to date – the guys decided to make their latest EP something of an alternate career retrospective, comprised of b-sides, demos and other rarities from its 10 year history. -
