Patrea Dear All Can I extend my sincere appreciation to you all for the strength of leadership you have shown in the lead up to, and in the wake of, Tropical Cyclone Marcia. I can fully appreciate the nature and the magnitude of the task that confronts many of you in the clean-up and recovery phase now that the cyclone has passed. While the ADF, SES, Building and Asset Services from the Department of Housing and Public Works, local Councils and volunteers all work to clean up schools and communities, can I assure you that our thoughts continue to be with you at this challenging time. We know that many of you have had damage to buildings and may have suffered loss to contents as a result of the impacts of the cyclone. To this end, the Director-General has asked Mr Jeff Hunt, Deputy Director-General, to act as a central coordinator to respond to any specific requests that you need to access materials that will facilitate a speedy return to normal school activities. As we learned from previous natural disasters, the education and business communities are keen to assist schools return to normal and one way we can do this is to assist in the collation of your needs. In a coordinated manner, we can approach our regular suppliers and other benefactors who wish to support this effort. Of course we encourage you to take action to get back to learning and teaching as soon as it is safe to do so and you can of course use school funds to help you in this regard. It is important to remember that DET standing offer arrangements also have the provision to buy locally and often it is in times like these that local businesses also need assistance in the form of cash flow and trade, so I would ask you to consider how best to serve your school at the same time as your community. I know that this is an extremely busy time for you but as you progress through the clean-up and identify things that have been lost that with speedy replacement will assist in a quick return to learning, could you please advise Jeff at [email protected] or on telephone 3035 2226 or s.47(3)(b) - Contraryand to we Public will Interest put the call out to other schools, businesses and community organisations. I would encourage you to look after yourselves and your own families during this time when you are also leading your school communities - and, again, thank you for what you are doing to get your schools back up and running as soon as possible. 1 RTI application 340/5/4122 - File A, Central Queensland Region - Document 40 of 366 Warm regards Patrea Walton & Jeff Hunt Patrea Walton I Deputy Director-General, State Schools Department of Education and Training Queensland Government Level 22 I Education House I 30 Mary Street I Brisbane Qld 4000 PO Box 15033 I City East Qld 4002 T 303 44762 I E [email protected] I http://dete.qld.gov.au/ Inspiring minds. From: BUTLER, Wayne [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, 21 February 2015 10:00 PM To: DL- Principals Region Central Queensland All; O'HAGAN, David; WATIERSTON, Jim; WALTON, Patrea; 'ATKINS, Graham'; MARA, Kevin Cc: DL - Region Central Queensland Subject: RD Emergency Update Dear Colleagues, Today has certainly been a test of resilience by all. After the cyclone has come the realisation of the damage caused. We have no power across the most of Rockhampton and the Capricorn Coast, we have no constant water supply across Rockhampton and we have a LOT of debris to clean up. Now comes the good news as we have a great amount of resources being thrown at every issue. The work of BAS and Section 78B (2) ofhas the beenRTI Act very strong to enable us to have an assessment of every school by tonight. In many cases staff from BAS have jumped fences to access school grounds and do an assessment of damage. This has been a very extensive piece of work to gather all these assessments. The following information is for your information in relation to our strategy going forward tomorrow and into next week: 1] Power is important but not absolutely essential for a school to open. If toilets and water supply are driven by power then an alternative is required. We have plans to supply those schools with generators or portaloos for Monday. Schools connected to town water supply don't need power for toilets or water. 2] At present the water supply to the Capricorn Coast has returned but the water supply to Rockhampton tonight is still not constant. It is expected to return to constancy tomorrow. 3] We still have access issues to schools on the lower Capricorn Coast and in the Jam bin area, but roads are all expected to open tomorrow morning. Again BAS has been able to review these schools and have made assessments of damage and rectification required. 4] By 4.00pm tomorrow, I hope to be in a position to make a final call on any schools with issues that might prevent them from opening on Monday. This will be reflected on the DETE website as to which schools are closed and I will do media at 5.00pm to also provide this information. S]Whilst debris is an issue in terms of safety, if we can have it cleared away from buildings and stockpiled, we can keep students away from it until it can be picked up or mulched. We will not be taking any risks and those who have contacted me to tell me the amount of debris in their school is huge, my hope is that the BAS crews and many contractors will have this cleared tomorrow. Our goal as a service industry for education is to provide a safe learning environment, so we will not be placing any students or staff at risk. However it is my goal to have as many schools as humanly possible open on Monday. Albeit some learning conditions may vary if power is not on. Please keep communicating with me or Trish Collins if you have an issue or a question about something we may have overlooked.
