Although representative of the second golden era of Japanese science fiction in print in its diversity and with an emphasis on that year in science fiction, as the volumes progress the editors’ unspoken agenda has become more pronounced, which is to create a set of expectations for the genre and to uphold writers Project Itoh and EnJoe Toh as exemplary of this current golden era.

  • Kotatsu Japanese Animation Film Festival 2017 in Partnership with the Japan Foundation
Kotatsu Japanese Animation Film Festival 2017 In partnership with the Japan Foundation Chapter - September 29th - October 1st, 2017 Aberystwyth Arts Centre – October 28th, 2017 The Largest Festival of Japanese Animation in Wales Announces Dates, Locations and Films for 2017 The Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival returns to Wales for another edition in 2017 with audiences able to enjoy a whole host of Welsh premieres, a Japanese marketplace, and a Q&A and special film screening hosted by an important figure from the Japanese animation industry. The festival begins in Cardiff at Chapter Arts on the evening of Friday, September 29th with a screening of Masaaki Yuasa’s film The Night is Short, Walk on Girl (2017), a charming romantic romp featuring a love-sick student chasing a girl through the streets of Kyoto, encountering magic and weird situations as he does so. Festival head, Eiko Ishii Meredith will be on hand to host the opening ceremony and a party to celebrate the start of the festival which will last until October 01st and include a diverse array of films from near-future tales Napping Princess (2017) to the internationally famous mega-hit Your Name (2016). The Cardiff portion of the festival ends with a screening of another Yuasa film, the much-requested Mind Game (2004), a film definitely sure to please fans of surreal and adventurous animation. This is the perfect chance for people to see it on the big-screen since it is rarely screened. A selection of these films will then be screened at the Aberystywth Arts Centre on October 28th as Kotatsu helps to widen access to Japanese animated films to audiences in different locations.

  • The Anime 2017/03/09 1235 Harmony Oct 3, 2016
Harmony – All the Anime 2017/03/09 1235 Harmony Oct 3, 2016 By Hugh David. In the future, humanity has invested in public health as the key way to offer individual citizens their best life experience, reducing the sort of concerns that lead to unrest. This includes constant monitoring, alerts and reminders by way of embedded biotech and retinal displays, as well as offering whatever treatments are needed as and when. Japanese Helix Agent Tuan Kirie, from the World Health Organisation’s operations agency, attempted to rebel when young as part of a suicide pact with two friends. One balked, and saved her, but the third, the instigator of the pact, died. Now, their mutual past may be key to a lethal cyber outbreak in the present, one that causes mass suicide and is claimed by a group citing very familiar-sounding rhetoric… The first of the three posthumous feature adaptations of works by late SF http://blog.alltheanime.com/harmony/ Page 1 of 5 Harmony – All the Anime 2017/03/09 1235 author Project Itoh, Harmony adapts the novel with style, even as it cuts it back to the core in order to tell the story in a sweeping cinematic manner. Directors Michael Arias (Tekkonkinkreet) and Takashi Nakamura (A Tree of Palme) take Itoh’s ideas seriously, as much as any live-action adapter of any classic work of literature. Fans of the novel will see immediately the incorporation of ideas like the Emotional HTML, or the flashbacks from the earlier part of the book, even as the film works to convey the narrative without the novel’s first-person perspective.

  • The Future Is Japanese
THE FUTURE IS JAPANESE CAT BANDIT sets a course for Haikasoru, a US-based publishing imprint that unleashes the most insane (and typically Japanese) futurism in readables today. VIZ Media tradebooks editor NICK MAMATAS gives her warp speed. ooks “Space opera, dark fantasy, and “Masumi Washington, Editor- hard science” screams their in-Chief of Haikasoru, reads website’s chief obsessions, widely and will commission but there’s one other clause sample translations of a few in Haikasoru’s self-signed chapters of some books,” says contract that make them Nick Mamatas, VIZ Media’s one of the most intriguing tradebooks editor. Half his publishers in sci-fi (and job is editing Haikasoru’s beyond) right now. Long titles (which is an imprint of defined by their dedication to VIZ), working closely with “bringing Japanese science translators, writing cover fiction to America and copy, and developing cover beyond,” if it ain’t from the land concepts. He also puts that eye of the rising sun, it ain’t no fun. to good use for Studio Ghibli HAIKASORA B 42 43 and the occasional manga ROBOT BUDDHA VS. CYBER novel tie-in. “We’ll go over JESUS >> If Haikasoru have them and make offers based no particular caveats in terms on what we like and think we of how far their words are can sell. What we like hasn’t prepared to go, they certainly changed much – high-concept have none when it comes material that’s intelligent and to choosing the writers who well-written – but what we go those distances – just so think can sell has changed a long as they bring some kind bit over the years.

  • Coping with Disaster Through Technology: Goodbye
個別論文 Coping with Disaster through Technology: “Goodbye me!” ─ Itô Keikaku’s Future Harmony ─ Denis TAILLANDIER Abstract Post-war Japanese science fiction’s fascination with the imagination of disaster relates to historical reality in a complex fashion. Focusing on a work of the acclaimed representative of zero nendai (2000’s) Japanese science fiction, Itô Keikaku’s Harmony, this paper explores another possible view on historical reality: a future world where human experience has been made self- evident through (nano-) technological means. Harmony offers a bleak vision of a transhumanist future triggered by a nuclear disaster that compelled world leaders to replace governments with medical administrations. These ‘admedistrations’ monitor and keep humans in perfect health within a frighteningly benevolent society to which they cannot fully adapt. Harmony questions the nature and functionality of consciousness itself, which is made superfluous by the advent of a post- nanotech society. It provides therefore a valuable insight into the ethical issues raised by nanotechnology as well as a sarcastic critique of a sterilized and commodified global society. Keywords : Science fiction, Japan, nanotechnology, cultural studies, Itô Keikaku - 173 - 立命館言語文化研究25巻 1 号 <reference:textbook:id=hsj56093-4n7mn 2jp:line=3496> <content> Many people developed cancer from the radiation.
