Although representative of the second golden era of Japanese science fiction in print in its diversity and with an emphasis on that year in science fiction, as the volumes progress the editors’ unspoken agenda has become more pronounced, which is to create a set of expectations for the genre and to uphold writers Project Itoh and EnJoe Toh as exemplary of this current golden era. -
Kotatsu Japanese Animation Film Festival 2017 in Partnership with the Japan Foundation
Kotatsu Japanese Animation Film Festival 2017 In partnership with the Japan Foundation Chapter - September 29th - October 1st, 2017 Aberystwyth Arts Centre – October 28th, 2017 The Largest Festival of Japanese Animation in Wales Announces Dates, Locations and Films for 2017 The Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival returns to Wales for another edition in 2017 with audiences able to enjoy a whole host of Welsh premieres, a Japanese marketplace, and a Q&A and special film screening hosted by an important figure from the Japanese animation industry. The festival begins in Cardiff at Chapter Arts on the evening of Friday, September 29th with a screening of Masaaki Yuasa’s film The Night is Short, Walk on Girl (2017), a charming romantic romp featuring a love-sick student chasing a girl through the streets of Kyoto, encountering magic and weird situations as he does so. Festival head, Eiko Ishii Meredith will be on hand to host the opening ceremony and a party to celebrate the start of the festival which will last until October 01st and include a diverse array of films from near-future tales Napping Princess (2017) to the internationally famous mega-hit Your Name (2016). The Cardiff portion of the festival ends with a screening of another Yuasa film, the much-requested Mind Game (2004), a film definitely sure to please fans of surreal and adventurous animation. This is the perfect chance for people to see it on the big-screen since it is rarely screened. A selection of these films will then be screened at the Aberystywth Arts Centre on October 28th as Kotatsu helps to widen access to Japanese animated films to audiences in different locations. -

Lost in Transmediation. Transmedial Adaption of Videogames and GDNA Theory
Lost in Transmediation. Transmedial Adaption of Videogames and GDNA Theory Sven Dwulecki Eberhard Karls University Tuebingen, Germany DOI: https://doi.org/10.7358/ijtl-2018-002-dwul [email protected] If you have any interest in the history or future of video games, it’s almost a set text: the videogame equivalent of Breaking Bad, James Joyce’ Ulysses or The Wire. [Metal Gear Solid is] an action adventure series, a stealth game, a once-in-a-console-generation technical showcase, an ul- tra-budget AAA game, an idiosyncratic, medium-defin- ing work reflecting the personality of its creator and au- teur Hideo Kojima […]. (Dawkins 2015, 9) ABSTRACT – Videogames and their transmedial adaptations share common persua- sive messages. Their rhetoric is diverse, encompassing political as well as economic messages for the players. Yet, the possibilities to analyze the translation from video- games towards other media is so far limited. Without a systematic approach to address all circumstances behind videogame-rhetoric, the resulting insights for their transmedial satellites are difficult to compare. Therefore, this paper introduces the GDNA model. The Game Dynamic Narrative Analysis is crafted as a holistic ap- proach. Based upon the notion of videogame as artificial orator (homunculus digital- is), it compares videogames analysis with DNA sequencing. Identifying rhetoric sequences within a game’s genome is marked by the interplay between those ele- ments specific to games (like procedural rhetoric) and those transferred from other fields (like speech act analysis or visual rhetoric). Thereby, the GDNA model unifies narratological and ludological perspectives of game studies through incorporating both positions into every rhetorical analysis of games. -
Comics and Videogames Primarily from the Angle of Comics As the Source for Various Elements in Videogames
8 Metal Gear Solid and its comics adaptations Claudius Stemmler Both popular discourse and academic scholarship have a tendency to consider the relationship between comics and videogames primarily from the angle of comics as the source for various elements in videogames. This is not surprising because, as a multimodal medium (Ryan and Thon 2014, 11), videogames are well suited to encompass elements from other media formats. Moving into the opposite direction, comics adaptations have to transpose complex multimodal systems into a combination of images and words. Perhaps this complexity has lessened their appeal since comics adaptations have, similar to film novelizations, rarely received scholarly attention and appear to be mostly treated as a mere side effect of today’s integrated media industries. This, however, ignores the fact that such adaptations, independent of their artistic value, possess great potential to explore the relationship between comics and videogames as well as each medium’s individual properties. In 1998, the Japanese company Konami released Metal Gear Solid for the Sony PlayStation “to critical acclaim and commercial success” (Parkin 2012, n.p.). The game represented not only “an enormous leap forward in terms of what a story-driven action game could be” (Parish 2018, n.p.), but it also “formalize[d] and popularize[d] ‘Stealth’ as a kind of genre” (Parkin 2017, 147). Three years later, a sequel named Metal Gear Solid 2: The Sons of Liberty (2001) was released for the Sony PlayStation 2. Despite the fact that the game’s narrative lead to a backlash (Holmes 2012, 135) and its “divisive nature clearly drove away a portion of the audience” (Holmes 2012, 144), it was a commercial success, with its ludic elements very much fulfilling expectations toward an improved sequel (Holmes 2012, 134). -
