Although representative of the second golden era of Japanese science fiction in print in its diversity and with an emphasis on that year in science fiction, as the volumes progress the editors’ unspoken agenda has become more pronounced, which is to create a set of expectations for the genre and to uphold writers Project Itoh and EnJoe Toh as exemplary of this current golden era. -

Kotatsu Japanese Animation Film Festival 2017 In partnership with the Japan Foundation Chapter - September 29th - October 1st, 2017 Aberystwyth Arts Centre – October 28th, 2017 The Largest Festival of Japanese Animation in Wales Announces Dates, Locations and Films for 2017 The Kotatsu Japanese Animation Festival returns to Wales for another edition in 2017 with audiences able to enjoy a whole host of Welsh premieres, a Japanese marketplace, and a Q&A and special film screening hosted by an important figure from the Japanese animation industry. The festival begins in Cardiff at Chapter Arts on the evening of Friday, September 29th with a screening of Masaaki Yuasa’s film The Night is Short, Walk on Girl (2017), a charming romantic romp featuring a love-sick student chasing a girl through the streets of Kyoto, encountering magic and weird situations as he does so. Festival head, Eiko Ishii Meredith will be on hand to host the opening ceremony and a party to celebrate the start of the festival which will last until October 01st and include a diverse array of films from near-future tales Napping Princess (2017) to the internationally famous mega-hit Your Name (2016). The Cardiff portion of the festival ends with a screening of another Yuasa film, the much-requested Mind Game (2004), a film definitely sure to please fans of surreal and adventurous animation. This is the perfect chance for people to see it on the big-screen since it is rarely screened. A selection of these films will then be screened at the Aberystywth Arts Centre on October 28th as Kotatsu helps to widen access to Japanese animated films to audiences in different locations. -

Dishing out Silver Spoon : Agricultural Tourism in the Tokachi-Obihiro Area of Hokkaido
Title Dishing out Silver Spoon : Agricultural Tourism in the Tokachi-Obihiro Area of Hokkaido Author(s) Mason, Michele M. Citation International Journal of Contents Tourism, 1.2, 31-43 Issue Date 2016-06-13 Doc URL http://hdl.handle.net/2115/62624 Type bulletin (article) File Information IJCT-Vol-1.2-Mason-2016.pdf Instructions for use Hokkaido University Collection of Scholarly and Academic Papers : HUSCAP Dishing out Silver Spoon: Agricultural Tourism in the Tokachi-Obihiro Area of Hokkaido Michele M. Mason Abstract: Arakawa Hiromu’s best-selling manga Silver Spoon, which began serialization in 2011, kicked off an impromptu migration of fans to the story’s setting, the Tokachi-Obihiro region of Hokkaido. Both local tourism officials and agricultural stakeholders quickly devised a number of strategies to capitalize on the newfound interest in their region. Their efforts only intensified when anime and film versions were released in 2013 and 2014. This article examines the ways local officials, business owners, and other constituents have pursued not only profits from Silver Spoon-inspired tourism, but also the chance to offer a different picture of agricultural life than is typically disseminated in the media. Below, I demonstrate how the promotion of Ban’ei horse racing, a wide-variety of agricultural products, and hands-on farming and food production experiences are at the heart of local community’s attempts to appropriate the cultural capital of Silver Spoon to craft narratives of Tokachi identity, heritage, and pride. アブストラクト:荒川弘によるベストセラーマンガ作品『銀の匙 -

Introduction
Notes Introduction 1 . See, for example, Mitsuhiro Yoshimoto’s review article “Anime from Akira to Princess Mononoke: Experiencing Contemporary Japanese Animation. By Susan J. Napier” in The Journal of Asian Studies , 61(2), 2002, pp. 727–729. 2 . Key texts relevant to these thinkers are as follows: Gilles Deleuze, Cinema I and Cinema II (London: Athlone Press, 1989); Jacques Ranciere, The Future of the Image (London and New York: Verso, 2007); Brian Massumi, Parables for the Virtual: Movement Affect, Sensation (Durham: Duke University Press, 2002); Slavoj Žižek, The Sublime Object of Ideology (London and New York: Verso, 1989); Steven Shaviro, The Cinematic Body (Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 1993). 3 . This is a recurrent theme in The Anime Machine – and although Lamarre has a carefully nuanced approach to the significance of technology, he ultimately favours an engagement with the specificity of the technology as the primary starting point for an analysis of the “animetic” image: see Lamarre, 2009: xxi–xxiii. 4 . For a concise summing up of this point and a discussion of the distinction between creation and “fabrication” see Collingwood, 1938: pp. 128–131. 5 . Lamarre is strident critic of such tendencies – see The Anime Machine , p. xxviii & p. 89. 6 . “Culturalism” is used here to denote approaches to artistic products and artefacts that prioritize indigenous traditions and practices as a means to explain the artistic rationale of the content. While it is a valuable exercise in contextualization, there are limits to how it can account for creative processes themselves. 7 . Shimokawa Ōten produced Imokawa Mukuzo Genkanban no Maki (The Tale of Imokawa Mukuzo the Concierge ) which was the first animated work to be shown publicly – the images were retouched on the celluloid. -
