ZooKeys 157: 67–79. doi: 10.3897/zookeys.157.1339 Abstract Nearly 260 taxa and chromosomal races of subfamily Chrysomelinae have been chromosomally ana- lyzed showing a wide range of diploid numbers from 2n = 12 to 2n = 50, and four types of male sex- chromosome systems. with the parachute-like ones Xyp and XYp clearly prevailing (79.0%), but with the XO well represented too (19.75%). The modal haploid number for chrysomelines is n = 12 (34.2%) although it is not probably the presumed most plesiomorph for the whole subfamily, because in tribe Timarchini the modal number is n = 10 (53.6%) and in subtribe Chrysomelina n = 17 (65.7%). Some well sampled genera, such as Timarcha, Chrysolina and Cyrtonus, are variable in diploid numbers, whereas others, like Chrysomela, Paropsisterna, Oreina and Leptinotarsa, are conservative and these differences are discussed. The main shifts in the chromosomal evolution of Chrysomelinae seems to be centric fissions and pericentric inversions but other changes as centric fusions are also clearly demonstrated. -

He promoted research on Chrysomelidae not only by his nearly 500 publications (see list below), but even more so by his personal input to the international and European symposia on leaf beetles, and especially by the six volumes he co-edited (nos. 274, 316, 338, 339, 340, 445 of the list below) and the three he (co-)authored (nos. 329, 347, 389). Besides his numerous papers and books on leaf beetles, he has also published on ants, especially ant-plant interactions, on parasites of insects, and on broader topics, such as evolution. -

Federal de Viçosa, 36.571-000, Viçosa, MG Neotropical Entomology 37(5):546-551 (2008) Cariótipo, Distribuição da Heterocromatina e Meiose de Zabrotes subfasciatus (Bohemann) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae, Bruchinae) RESUMO - Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boh.) é estudada intensivamente em termos agronômicos e bioquímicos por causar danos aos grãos de leguminosas armazenados. No entanto, os dados publicados sobre o seu cariótipo são escassos e confl itantes. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi descrever o cariótipo e a meiose desse inseto e analisar o padrão de bandas-C de seus cromossomos. Foram analisados os gânglios cerebrais de pré-pupas e os testículos de adultos e pupas com adaptação de uma técnica que permitiu boa qualidade de preparo dos cromossomos dessa espécie. Todos os indivíduos apresentaram 26 cromossomos nas metáfases mitóticas. Esses cromossomos foram classifi cados em: acrocêntricos (cromossomo X); submetacêntricos (pares 4 e 5); subtelocêntricos (par 12 e cromossomo y); metacêntricos (demais pares). O cromossomo 5 apresentou uma constrição secundária. Todos os cromossomos apresentaram heterocromatina próximo ao centrômero e os cromossomos 5, 9 e X, nos braços longos. O cromossomo X mostrou-se heteropicnótico durante toda a prófase da primeira divisão meiótica. As subfases da prófase I foram pouco distintas e a meiose II de difícil identifi cação.
