Shropshire Entomology – April 2011 (No.3) A bi-annual newsletter focussing upon the study of insects and other invertebrates in the county of Shropshire (V.C. 40) April 2010 (Vol. 3) Editor: Pete Boardman [email protected] ~ Welcome ~ Welcome to the 3rd edition of the Shropshire Entomology newsletter. By the time you receive this the recording season should be under way and hopefully those cold and miserable winter days will be but a mere memory. Also underway will be the Invertebrate challenge programme of training days, a three year project funded by The Heritage Lottery Fund and The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, which will be running around 100 events in total concentrating on the identification of some of Shropshire’s most under-recorded and under-studied invertebrates. It will also enable Shropshire Entomology to continue for the next three years, as well as enable my involvement with the SEDN as manager of the invertebrate database. Many thanks once more to everyone who has contributed to this edition. It can only function as a ‘newsletter’ if people contribute articles of news and views, so please do consider submitting articles that relate to entomology in Shropshire or entomology in general. This study describes how several insect species are used, which often follows a series of processes from collecting to consumption and the quite diversified insect utilization based on various skills and knowledge in ethnoento mology. Even though insects are not an important subsistence resource, the San have an extensive knowledge and make good use of insects. The insects even spice up the San daily life. Key words: insects, ethnoentomology, diversified utilization, food, material, children's play INTRODUCTION The San are known to use many kinds of natural resources and possess great knowledge of nature (Lee, 1979; Tanaka, 1980; Silberbauer, 1981). The principle objectives of San studies have focused on the hunting and gathering subsistence system. Although these studies detailed the uses of various resources, little atten tion has been paid to the uses of marginal resources, which I believe are essential in discussing the San's deep and broad knowledge of nature. This paper will describe their extensive knowledge of insects. Through my research, I found that the San are usually in contact with insects in their daily lives and interact with them in various ways. -

Lindroth and his contribution to carabidology. – In 2007, the Society for Applied Carabidology (Gesellschaft für Angewandte Carabidologie) awarded the Carl H. Lindroth Prize for the first time. This event was established both to honour the life-work of especially committed present-day carabidologists and to pay tribute to the life-work of Carl H. Lindroth. Due to this occasion we give a brief overview of Lindroth’s research in systematics and taxonomy, morphology, faunistics, biogeo- graphy, ecology, evolutionary biology and genetics of ground beetles. Our account focuses mainly on the pioneer work done by Carl H. This paper compiles an updated checklist of the Sicilian Cassidinae and Cryptocephalini species (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae, Cassidinae and Cryptocephalinae) starting from a critical bibliographic screening and adding new material, mainly collected by the first author in the last few decades. A total of 61 species is reported, withnew data for many rarely collected taxa. The provided data expand the known distribution of many uncommon species in Sicily. Two species are recorded for the first time: Cassida inopinata Sassi and Borowiec, 2006 and Cryptocephalus (Cryptocephalus) bimaculatus Fabricius, 1781 and two uncertain presences are confirmed: Cassida deflorata Suffrian, 1844 and Cassida nobilis Linné, 1758. The presence of other sixteen species is considered questionable and needs further confirmation. 1. Introduction Leaf beetles are all phytophagous Coleoptera. They are usually of a rather stout build, with a rounded or oval shape, often brightly coloured or with metallic hues. Worldwide some 32500 species in 2114 genera of Chrysomelidae have been described (Slipi´ nski´ et al. 2011), the majority of which occur in the tropics as is the case with numerous other Coleoptera families. Currently, the leaf beetle subfamily Cassidinae comprises the tortoise beetles (Cassidinae s. str.) and the hispine beetles (Hispinae s. str.) (Borowiec 1995; Hsiao and Windsor 1999; Chaboo 2007). So far, the Cassidinae list about 6300 described species within more than 340 genera, being the second most speciose subfamily of leaf beetles (Borowiec and Swi˛etoja´ nska´ 2014). -
