To further our understandings of media and social change, this dissertation examines the relationship between Lebanese media use and subjectivities in different times and geographic locations, including within the Lebanese diaspora. It incorporates three case studies, including textual analyses of 1) representations of Syro‐Lebanese Oklahoman immigrants in The Oklahoman from 1901 to 1958; 2) discourses on media and communication in the contemporary Lebanese civil war novel; and 3) constructions of journalistic authority within the Lebanese blogosphere during the 2006 Summer Israeli‐Hizballah war. Through these case studies, this dissertation investigates how global power is constructed/perpetuated/resisted via existing communication channels and patterns of relating that have been created throughout history. viii CHAPTER 1 Dissertation Introduction In dealing with the postcolonial question, Arab cultural studies cannot afford to ignore the latest crucially important terrain of capitalism: cultural production and the relationship between the colonization of communication space and postcolonial identity. Tarik Sabry (2007, 168). A range of discursive and structural authorities bear upon the ways individuals and communities incorporate media into their lives—for instance, through the production and framing of issues related to security and identity, and in the construction of socio‐economic/age/gender dynamics that shape cultural decodings and modes of use of new technologies. Conversely, individuals use media to shape these social forces. From this view, media use is neither socially determined nor socially determinative outside of its relationship with subjectivity, the process by which the self makes meaning of its place in the world (Jackson 2002). The very concept of “new media” highlights how meanings and uses of media‐as‐technology shift over time. Signified in relation to fluid notions of “progress,” technology is constructed through and constructive of ideologies and power at specific historical junctures (Murphy and Potts 2003). Therefore the relationships between people and media are complex and highly contextual. Nevertheless, the field of media studies suffers a “drastically foreshortened historical perspective” (Morley 2007, 3). Positioning new media as “the magical dreams of the era of technomodernity,” media studies scholars frequently assume a distinct break between a more “modern” present and “traditional” ways of the 1 past, particularly between eras of analogue and digital media (2). Currently, an array of popular discourses within global journalism and politics position media as determinative of Arab publics. This determinism takes both dystopic and utopic forms; new media can foster jihad or lead Arabs to democratic revolution, depending on the particular social processes or practices being explained as a “current event.” To help correct this ontological bias, investigations of new media must start to “chart the path” of the “tidal wave” of media use rather than merely investigating its current “froth at the crest” (Lister, Dovey, Giddings, Grant and Kelly 2009, 3). Otherwise the field of media studies risks overemphasizing technological determinism—the idea of technology as the driving force behind social change—without basis. With this dissertation, I help “chart the path” of media and social change by contributing a description of Lebanese media use and subjectivities in different times and geographic locations. Through an examination of situations of media use among Lebanese in Lebanon and within the Lebanese diaspora, I highlight the embeddedness of media within a world capitalist system that originated in histories of colonialism. Yet I also emphasize how Lebanese use media as instruments of material and discursive power. I look at the relationship between media and processes of subjectivity construction, negotiation, and maintenance. I argue that media, the situations enabling/constraining their access, and the ways in which humans use them must be positioned within broad spheres of historic, economic, and political relations. I demonstrate these contingencies through a 2 focus on how communication practices shape and are shaped by processes we label as “globalization.” A lack of research and theoretical connections between fields of media studies and globalization studies has rendered our understanding of the connection between media and globalization as “vague and unspecified” (Rantanen 2005, 4). Additionally, such paucity of disciplinary connections leaves media and international communication scholars underrepresented in empirical and theoretical discussions regarding globalization (Kraidy 2005; Rantanen 2005). Finally, postcolonial theorists decry the “belatedness” of globalization theory to conversations on identity politics and representation (Loomba, Kaul, Bunzel, Burton and Esty, 2005). To help fill these lacunae, this dissertation moves between Lebanon and the United States to explore relationships between media and people in constructing global and local realities. At its heart, the project raises a fundamental art historical question: How do we study abstraction across different contexts and what models of analysis do we use? It's a great opportunity to renew Jold acquaintances, to share remembrances of the past and to truly speak of the hopes and visions for the future. Since the first Convention in 1964, I have attended every Convention except one, and that was due to illness. Each one has been special and each one unique, reflecting the gifts of the local community. I am sure this Convention will also be a time of happiness and joy. The month of July is also very special for all Americans. We celebrate on the Fourth with fireworks, parties and parades. We celebrate our freedom and our independence. Despite the problems we may have in this country, it is still the greatest place to live, and we should all thank God for our being Americans. I once asked our former Patriarch, " What is a way of being a good Maronite?" He replied: "By being a good American." Our Lebanese culture and heritage are second to none, but it seems that political leaders do not work together to preserve that beautiful country. Pope John Paul II said, "Lebanon is more than a country, it is a message to the world." What happened? Our Patriarch has just consecrated Lebanon again to Our Lady, as Mary is our only hope for the future.

    ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: TELEVISION NEWS AND THE STATE IN LEBANON Jad P. Melki, Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Dissertation directed by: Professor Susan D. Moeller College of Journalism This dissertation studies the relationship between television news and the state in Lebanon. It utilizes and reworks New Institutionalism theory by adding aspects of Mitchell’s state effect and other concepts devised from Carey and Foucault. The study starts with a macro-level analysis outlining the major cultural, economic and political factors that influenced the evolution of television news in that country. It then moves to a mezzo-level analysis of the institutional arrangements, routines and practices that dominated the news production process. Finally, it zooms in to a micro-level analysis of the final product of Lebanese broadcast news, focusing on the newscast, its rundown and scripts and the smaller elements that make up the television news story. The study concludes that the highly fragmented Lebanese society generated a similarly fragmented and deeply divided political/economic elite, which used its resources and access to the news media to solidify its status and, by doing so, recreated and confirmed the politico-sectarian divide in this country. In this vicious cycle, the institutionalized and instrumentalized television news played the role of mediator between the elites and their fragmented constituents, and simultaneously bolstered the political and economic power of the former while keeping the latter tightly held in their grip. The hard work and values of the individual journalist were systematically channeled through this powerful institutional mechanism and redirected to serve the top of the hierarchy.

    Song, State, Sawa Music and Political Radio between the US and Syria Beau Bothwell Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Beau Bothwell All rights reserved ABSTRACT Song, State, Sawa: Music and Political Radio between the US and Syria Beau Bothwell This dissertation is a study of popular music and state-controlled radio broadcasting in the Arabic-speaking world, focusing on Syria and the Syrian radioscape, and a set of American stations named Radio Sawa. I examine American and Syrian politically directed broadcasts as multi-faceted objects around which broadcasters and listeners often differ not only in goals, operating assumptions, and political beliefs, but also in how they fundamentally conceptualize the practice of listening to the radio. Beginning with the history of international broadcasting in the Middle East, I analyze the institutional theories under which music is employed as a tool of American and Syrian policy, the imagined youths to whom the musical messages are addressed, and the actual sonic content tasked with political persuasion. At the reception side of the broadcaster-listener interaction, this dissertation addresses the auditory practices, histories of radio, and theories of music through which listeners in the sonic environment of Damascus, Syria create locally relevant meaning out of music and radio. Drawing on theories of listening and communication developed in historical musicology and ethnomusicology, science and technology studies, and recent transnational ethnographic and media studies, as well as on theories of listening developed in the Arabic public discourse about popular music, my dissertation outlines the intersection of the hypothetical listeners defined by the US and Syrian governments in their efforts to use music for political ends, and the actual people who turn on the radio to hear the music.

Broadcasting Regulation and Civil Society in Postwar Lebanon Abstract Providing a regulatory framework for dozens of unlicensed wartime radio and television stations has been an arduous task for postwar Lebanese governments. Based on Lebanese media monitoring, a review of the Lebanese press, and interviews with media people in Lebanon, this study traces the development of broadcasting in prewar Lebanon, describes wartime changes, and discusses postwar broadcasting regulation in the country within the framework of civil society. Examining the factors that shaped regulation and the forces opposing it, this article calls for a more inclusive regulatory framework preserving national stability and media freedom.     Awardee: Emily Nasrallah Writer, Lebanon Emily Nasrallah is one of the most well-known writers in the Arab world. In her works written for adults and children, she has found a poetic language to describe everyday life in war-torn Lebanon. In this way, she has contributed over the years to reconciliation between the different populations in Lebanon. Besides war, her main themes are the life of village women and migration. Her first novel, Birds of September (1962), is not only read regularly in Lebanon’s schools today, but is also considered a classic of Arabic literature. Born in 1931, Emily Nasrallah grew up in a Christian family in a village in southern Lebanon. After studying education at the American University in Beirut, she worked as a teacher, then as a journalist and freelance writer. In 1962, her debut novel, Touyour Ayloul (Birds of September), was published and went on to receive three Arabic literary awards. In addition to novels, essays and short stories for adults, Nasrallah has also published seven children’s books. Her writings’ mainly focus on village life in Lebanon, women’s emancipation efforts, identity issues in the Lebanese civil war and migration. Many of her books have been translated into other languages, including English, Spanish, Dutch, Finnish, Thai and German. Although her home and possessions were destroyed in various bomb attacks during the Lebanese civil war, Nasrallah refused to go into exile. Together with a group of female writers, described as the “Beirut Decentrists”, the mother of four remained in Beirut, where she still lives today.
