BENJAMÍN LAPIEDRA CHERP. CREACIÓN Y REPER- TORIO DEL SEXTETO LAPIEDRA Anabel Martínez Hernández Resumen Con el fin de preservar y gestionar el patrimonio musical que se posee en la Biblioteca del Conservatorio Superior de Música de Valencia, me propuse estudiar el fondo de Benjamín Lapiedra Cherp (1868-1944) que se con- serva en la biblioteca del centro. Benjamín Lapiedra realizó una gran labor como profesor de violín en el Conservatorio de Música de Valencia, ayudando a crear la orquesta del conservatorio, y otras agrupa- ciones camerísticas como el Sexteto Lapiedra y la Orquesta Clásica. En el presente artículo se da a co- nocer la figura de Benjamín Lapiedra Cherp, así co- mo la creación y el repertorio del Sexteto Lapiedra. Palabras clave: Benjamín Lapiedra, Sexteto Lapiedra, música de cámara, sextetos Abstract In order to preserve and manage the musical heritage conserved in the library of the Conservatory Superior of Music of Valencia, I decided to study the collection of Ben- jamín Lapiedra Cherp (1868-1944) which is preserved in the library of the centre. Ben- jamín Lapiedra performed a great job as professor of violin at the Valencia Conservato- 1 ry of music, helping to create the orchestra of the conservatory, and other chamber mu- sic groups such as the Lapiedra Sextet, and the Classical Orchestra. -

BACH TO PARKER Thomas Gould FOREWORD This album began life as a recital programme in which I interspersed movements from Bach’s six Sonatas and Partitas for unaccompanied violin with some of the new works recorded here for the first time. My intention was to show that the extended violin techniques called upon by living composers had evolved from the demanding contrapuntal writing of Bach, whose mighty Chaconne is considered as the summit of the solo violin repertoire. All composers writing solo violin music face the challenge of composing for an essentially monophonic instrument, and it is interesting to see the points of comparison and departure in the way the composers featured on this disc address this inherent limitation. In the case of Mark Bowden’s Lines Written a Few Miles Below and Nico Muhly’s Long Line a solution is provided by technology, as both pieces utilise a pre-recorded backing track. The final track on this album is a performance of Miles Davis’s classic bebop tune Donna Lee (with its close association to the great Charlie Parker) in which my solo is a loose transcription of bassist Jaco Pastorius’s famous solo from his version of this tune on the album Jaco, and complements the preceding piece BoBop by John Hawkins. I’d particularly like to thank David and Mary Bowerman, Raphaël Mouterde, David O’Brien and Sam Hogarth, who transcribed the solo on Donna Lee . I hope you enjoy the journey from Bach to Parker as much as I did in selecting and recording this repertoire, and I hope that many of the new works will take their deserving place in the repertoire of music composed for solo violin. -

Press release date: 3 February 2016 PORTRAIT OF A COMPOSER MARK SIMPSON’S DEBUT DISC FOR NMC Premiere Recordings In May 2016 NMC is releasing a portrait CD, Night Music, to profile the work of 27 year old composer Mark Simpson featuring a collection of chamber music pieces (2006-2014) recorded by the musicians and ensembles for whom they were originally written. Among the performers are Ensemble 10/10 with Clark Rundell (the contemporary music group of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic with whom Mark has a long relationship, having first been commissioned by them when he was 15), the Mercury Quartet, cellists Leonard Elschenbroich and Guy Johnston, pianists Ian Buckle, Alexei Grynyuk, Víkingur Ólafsson and Richard Uttley, and oboists Nicholas Daniel and Jonathan Small, as well as Mark himself on clarinet. Mark’s works are most often inspired by dark tones and atmospheres of loss, dreams, hauntings, intimacy and passion and, as with Night Music and Echoes and Embers, often embrace ambiguities of emotion and attitude with extremes of quietude and agitation, of fragility and power. His pieces are also his own musical response to poetry (Sylvia Plath’s Ariel, Ted Hughes’ ‘Tales from Ovid’ for Windflower) or the mysteries and resonances of place (Barkham Fantasy whose genesis harks back to an eerie farmhouse on Dartmoor, and Nur Musik written during a stay in Berlin). Most recently Mark’s commissions have been on a much larger scale: 2015 saw the world premieres of Israfel for BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and The Immortal oratorio for Manchester International Festival, while his first chamber opera, Pleasure, debuts on 28 April 2016 for Opera North/Royal Opera/Aldeburgh Music. -

Provine Division of Musicology and Ethnomusicology School of Music, University of Maryland, College Park The cant valencià or cant valencià d’estil of Valencia is one of the four main living monodic expressive song traditions of Spain. Comprised of non-metric cant d’estil and metric albaes songs mostly used in street serenades, it features a distinctive vocality characterized by a highly-projected, clear, inflected, and flexible voice as well as two melodic styles, of which the more ornamented cant requintat developed at the turn of the twentieth century. I take a historical, theoretical, and ethnographic approach to this Valencian vocal genre and explore the ways in which vocality can help us to understand it better. After examining the origins of the cant valencià and the antiquarian, journalistic, folkloristic, and (ethno)musicological approaches to it, I probe the notion of vocality in a transdisciplinary way: drawing on ethnomusicological theory, anthropology, folklore, semiotics, and other disciplines I show its significance for the development of a musical anthropology of the voice productively based on the ethnographic exploration of the iconicity of style and of two sets of central vocal issues: on the one hand, identity, gender, authority, and sonic histories and geographies; on the other, acoustemology, interpellation, and transcendence. Vocality not only expands usefully the scope of vocal or singing style by encompassing larger bodily-dependent traits of the human voice as central or salient means of aesthetic and ethical production of meanings, but also acknowledges its pre- eminent position in the hierarchy of musical values, since the material/textural qualities of (vocal) sounds iconically shape our first sonorous perceptions and identifications and are thus paramount for communication.
