I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract Exception handling (EH) is a feature common to many modern programming languages, including C++, Java, and Python, that allows error handling in client code to be performed in a way that is both systematic and largely detached from the implementation of the main functionality. However, C++ developers sometimes choose not to use EH, as they feel that its use increases complexity of the resulting code: new control flow paths are added to the code, \stack unwinding" adds extra responsibilities for the developer to worry about, and EH arguably detracts from the modular design of the system. In this thesis, we perform an exploratory empirical study of the effects of exceptions usage in 2721 open source C++ systems taken from GitHub. We observed that the number of edges in an augmented call graph increases, on average, by 22% when edges for exception flow are added to a graph. Additionally, about 8 out of 9 functions that may propagate a throw from another function. -

افتتاحية العدد يكتبها : حسن ضوّة لماذا علينا أن نهتم بالبرمجيات الحرّة؟ تحوّلت المجتمعات العربيكة للسكف إلى مجتمعات معتمدة تقنيكا بشككل ككبير وشبكه كامكل على برمجيات احتكاريكة تأتكي مكن جهكة واحدة، لذا فعمليكا، المجال التقنكي لمجتمعاتنكا مسكيّر على حسكب رغبات هذه الشرككة فككل قرارات هذه الشركة تؤثر فينا، إذا قررت الشركة إيقاف تطوير أو دعم صيغة ملفات معينة أو برامكج معينكة فلن يكون لنكا اختيار آخكر غيكر اتباع هذا القرار، فتأثيكر ذلك عموما هو مجتمع مسيّر تقنيا ل يمكن تسميته مجتمعا مستقل أبدا، فهناك جهة خارجية تمتلك البرامج التي نستخدمها، وصيغة الملفات التي نحفظ بها بياناتنا، وليس لنا نحن إل رخصة استخدامها مقيّدا بشروط تعلنها الشركة المنتجة. كمكا تقدم البرمجيات الحرّة حل عمليكا للنشودة المعتادة، التحوّل مكن مجال السكتهلك إلى النتاج. مكع البرمجيات الحرة هناك آلية لتنفيذ ذلك مباشرة بدون أي عوائق في الترخيص، وتتمكن الشركات المحليكة من تقديم خدمات الدعكم الفنكي على برمجيات حرّة مكن إنتاج وتعديلت الشرككة نفسكها مباشرة. وتسكمح البرمجيات الحرّة بظهور الشركات الصغيرة في مجال مفتوح للمنافسة بدون التخوّف من الشركات الكبيرة المحتكرة. تسمح لنا البرمجيات الحرّة بالستفادة من الخبرات والمنتجات السابقة، كم شركة قامت بأعمال برمجية محلية في مجال اللغكة العربيكة وغيرهكا ثكم اختفكى منتجهكا ومات، والن ل يمككن السكتفادة منكه على الطلق... فمكا هكي الفائدة التي تعود على المجتمع العربي من هذه التجارب؟ البرمجيات الحرّة تقدم أسكاس قوي لتطويكر صكناعة برمجيات ناجحكة فكي الدول الناميكة بعيدا عكن تحككم الشركات الكبرى. أضف إلى ذلك واقع أن بعض البرمجيات التي نستخدمها يتم تطويرها أو تطوير جزء منها في دول معادية لنا، ول يمكن تأكيد النفوذ السياسية على معامل تطوير تلك البرامج، ول يمكن لنا التأكيد بشكل حتمي ما تقوم به هذه البرامكج - إضافكة إلى وظائفهكا المعلنكة-، فكي البرمجيات الحرّة تختفكي هذه المخاوف لن البرنامكج متاح مكع مصكدره للطلع عليه، وتضمين أكواد تقوم بمهام أخرى غير مهام البرنامج سيتم اكتشافها من قبل المطورين حول العالم، وهذا في الغلب ل يحدث في الساس لن المطور الذي يقوم بذلك يخاطر بسمعته وسمعة البرنامج.
