Ethnic Variation of */tʕ/ in Aswan Arabic Abstract This study aims to provide some acoustic documentation of two unusual and variable allophones in Aswan Arabic. Although many rural villages in southern Egypt enjoy ample linguistic documentation, many southern urban areas remain understudied. Arabic linguists have investigated religion as a factor influencing linguistic ariationv instead of ethnicity. This study investigates the role of ethnicity in the under-documented urban dialect of Aswan Arabic. The author conducted sociolinguistic interviews in Aswan from 2012 to 2015. He elected to measure VOT as a function of allophone, ethnicity, sex, and age in apparent time. The results reveal significant differences in VOT lead and lag for the two auditorily encoded allophones. The indigenous Nubians prefer a different pronunciation than their Ṣa‘īdī counterparts who trace their lineage to Arab roots. Women and men do not demonstrate distinct pronunciations. Age also does not appear to be affecting pronunciation choice. However, all three variables interact with each other. -

Biblia Arabica An Update on the State of Research Nathan Gibson, Miriam L. Hjälm, Peter Tarras, Ronny Vollandt, Vevian Zaki1 Abstract The aim of this contribution is to review some of the major areas of current research on the Arabic Bible, along with the factors and trends contributing to them. Also we present some of the tools that are currently under development in the Biblia Arabica team, Munich. We provide here a very condensed survey of the transmission of traditions, as well as ways that biblical manuscripts in Arabic have been analysed and classified, covering both Old Testament/ Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. Overall, the lack of critical editions for Arabic biblical texts in general reflects not just the overwhelming number of versions and manuscripts, but also the fundamental challenge these translations present on the level of textuality. Standard paradigms of authorship and transmission break down in the face of the complex reuse, revision, and layering of paratexts seen in these texts. It is the careful study of manuscripts, not simply as texts but also as physical objects, which holds promise for reconstructing the practices of producers and consumers of the Arabic Bible. A union catalogue of Arabic Bible manuscripts will gather the paleographic and codicological information necessary for further research. Moreover, it will link manuscripts, translators, and scribes to the online Bibliography of the Arabic Bible, which is intended to be a comprehensive, classified, and searchable reference tool for secondary literature. In conclusion, scholarship of the Arabic Bible now has considerable momentum, but must continue to keep its fundamental resource – that of manuscripts – in the foreground of research. -

languages Article Contrastive Feature Typologies of Arabic Consonant Reflexes Islam Youssef Department of Languages and Literature Studies, University of South-Eastern Norway, 3833 Bø i Telemark, Norway; [email protected] Abstract: Attempts to classify spoken Arabic dialects based on distinct reflexes of consonant phonemes are known to employ a mixture of parameters, which often conflate linguistic and non- linguistic facts. This article advances an alternative, theory-informed perspective of segmental typology, one that takes phonological properties as the object of investigation. Under this approach, various classificatory systems are legitimate; and I utilize a typological scheme within the framework of feature geometry. A minimalist model designed to account for segment-internal representations produces neat typologies of the Arabic consonants that vary across dialects, namely qaf,¯ gˇ¯ım, kaf,¯ d. ad,¯ the interdentals, the rhotic, and the pharyngeals. Cognates for each of these are analyzed in a typology based on a few monovalent contrastive features. A key benefit of the proposed typologies is that the featural compositions of the various cognates give grounds for their behavior, in terms of contrasts and phonological activity, and potentially in diachronic processes as well. At a more general level, property-based typology is a promising line of research that helps us understand and categorize purely linguistic facts across languages or language varieties. For one, it created a disconnect between modern readers—who are accustomed to typed writing—and classi- cal handwritten manuscripts, leaving in its wake a genera- tion that struggles to tap into a rich resource of knowledge. Dealing with manuscripts is a science in itself. Therefore, one way to remedy the current situation is to increase ex- posure to classical manuscripts and study the fundamentals with experts in the field. Shaykh Ṣāliḥ b. Muḥammad al-Azharī, a seasoned cura- tor at the Egyptian National Library, conducted a ten-day intensive on studying Arabic manuscripts. The intensive was divided into fourteen lectures. It comprised a theoret- ical exposé of the most important concepts that a student should be aware of when dealing with Arabic manuscripts. With over a decade of professional experience in handling manuscripts, he seamlessly explained fundamental concepts in the field and provided countless practical examples. The following companion is based on notes that I took during the intensive. -

Al-Qantara, vol. 18, nº 1 (1997) LENITION IN THE MOZARABIC DIALECTS: A REAPPRAISAL DAVID HANLON Birkbeck College, University of London Description of the varieties of Romance formerly spoken in al-An- dalus is complicated by the documentation of the greater part of the ex tant textual evidence in an alphabet which had been contrived to repre sent the sound system and syllabic structure of an unrelated language, and by the lack of any appreciable attempt on the part of the alphabet's users to adapt it to this new task. Lenition provides a measure of the difficulties this poses: whereas it has been possible to speculate on why the intervocalic plosives of Latin voiced in other varieties of Hispano- Romance, students of the Mozarabic dialects have sought to establish whether such lenition took place at all. Opinion remains divided bet ween those, like Meyer-Lübke i, who believe that it did not occur, and those, like Menéndez Pidal 2, who believe that it did. Meyer-Lübke affirms that the voicing of the intervocalic plosives in the Peninsula did not take place until after the Germanic invasions ^. He concludes from an acritical examination of the material that conti nuations of Latin /-t-/ and /-k-/ remained voiceless in the Mozarabic dialects at the time of the Islamic invasions '^, a view shared by Hall ^. Griffin observes that Latin /-t-/ and /-k-/ are transcribed as (voiceless) ;â'and çâ/respectively in the Vocabulista in arábico. Al Salah The Marvels of the Number Seven in the Noble Qur’an Book Summary This book sheds light upon a recent discovery centred around one of the most exciting topics in world religion and Islam in particular: the miracles of the Noble Qur’an. After studying thousands of Qur’anic words and passages, I have arrived at what can be considered the discovery of an intricate numeric system that rests within the verses of the Noble Qur’an. By the blessing of God Almighty, I have succeeded – after a detailed and methodical investigation – in proving both the existence and accuracy of this prolific numeric system, which comprehensively covers the Qur’an’s chapters, verses, words and letters. This new phenomenon will be referred to as the ‘numeric miracle’ of the Qur’an. The foundation and basis of this numeric system is the number 7, one of the most significant numbers in the Noble Qur’an1 (if not the most significant), and a hint, perhaps, that the Creator of the seven heavens is indeed the One Who sent down this Book, preserving it from distortion. This work is an attempt at establishing firm scientific and ethical grounds on which to base any study of the numeric miracle. A sound scientific approach must be adhered to whenever Qur’anic numbers are analysed, and this is something that I have honoured throughout this study and hope that fellow researchers will honour as well. A substantially large collection of profound numerical truths will be conveyed in this book. -

Ryding Excerpt More information 1 Introduction to Arabic Arabic is a Semitic language akin to Hebrew, Aramaic, and Amharic, and more dis- tantly related to indigenous language families of North Africa. It possesses a rich literary heritage dating back to the pre-Islamic era, and during the rise and expansion of the Islamic empire (seventh to twelfth centuries, AD), it became the official administrative language of the empire as well as a leading language of international scholarly and scientific communication. It is today the native language of over 200 million people in twenty different countries as well as the liturgical language for over a billion Muslims throughout the world. 1 Afro-Asiatic and the Semitic language family The Semitic language family is a member of a broader group of languages, termed Afro-Asiatic (also referred to as Hamito-Semitic). This group includes four subfamilies in addition to Semitic, all of which are indigenous languages of North Africa: (1) Tamazight (Berber) in the Northwest (Morocco, Mauretania, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya); (2) the Chad languages (including Hausa) in the Northwest Central area; (3) ancient Egyptian and Coptic; and (4) the Cushitic languages of Northeast Africa (Somalia, the Horn of Africa).1 The Semitic part of the family was originally based farthest East, in the Levant, the Fertile Crescent, and the Arabian peninsula. Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic (including Syriac), and Amharic are living language members of the Semitic group, but extinct languages such as Akkadian (Assyrian and Babylonian), Canaanite, and Phoenician are also Semitic. -

Abulhab (City University of New York) April, 2020 The key aspect of my readings of the texts of ancient Near East languages stems from my evidence-backed conclusion that these languages should be classified and read as early Arabic. I will explore here this central point by replying to a new theory with an opposite understanding of early Arabia and the Arabic language, put forth by Ahmad al-Jallad, a scholar of ancient Near East languages and scripts. In a recent debate with al-Jallad, a self-described Semitic linguist, he proclaimed that exchanging the term 'Semitic' for ‘early Arabic’ or ‘early fuṣḥā’ is “simply a matter of nomenclature.”1 While his interpretation of the term Semitic sounds far more moderate than that of most Western philologists and epigraphists, it is not only fundamentally flawed and misleading, but also counterproductive. Most scholars, unfortunately, continue to misinform their students and the scholarly community by alluding to a so-called Semitic mother language, as a scientific fact.
