  • Political Entertainment Media and the Elaboration Likelihood Model
Political Entertainment Media and the Elaboration Likelihood Model: A Focus on the Roles of Motivation and Ability Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Heather Lyn LaMarre, MPA, MA Graduate Program in Communication The Ohio State University 2009 Dissertation Committee: R. Lance Holbert, Advisor David Ewoldsen Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick Michael McCluskey Copyright by Heather Lyn LaMarre 2009 Abstract This dissertation extends the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) to the study of political communication. In particular, the project focuses on the role of ability and motivation, relative to contact with a variety of political entertainment media messages, on cognitive elaborations. Two studies were conducted to examine these political entertainment processes and effects. The first study was a 2 (ability: low, high) x 2 (media stimuli: The Daily Show, Anderson Cooper 360o) between-subjects design that examined individual-level cognitive elaboration and attitudes about the AIG executive bonus scandal involving government bailout funds. The second study was a 2 (motivation: high, low) x 2 (media stimuli: Sicko, Sicko and An American Carol) between-subjects design that examined individual-level cognitive elaboration and attitudes concerning nationalized healthcare. Results replicated traditional ELM findings. Ability and motivation had direct effects on individual-level elaboration. The main effects of ability and motivation were also found for issue-relevant and positively valenced thoughts. Message directly influenced individual-level elaborations, including total and issue-relevant thoughts. Additionally, interactions between message and ability were found for source credibility, counter-arguments, and media engagement.

  • 1. Introduction
    1. INTRODUCTION Research Context In a number of Middle Eastern contexts, the state primary and high school education systems have commenced using English literature texts. While these texts can afford improved access to English which is a highly valued commodity in these contexts, the use of English texts also has the capacity to provide increased access to a range of cultural values that may contradict local 'traditional' values. The state of Qatar is one of these contexts. While literature from other Middle Eastern states has revealed the emergence of tensions between the cultural frameworks offered by the English literature texts and those of the local culture/s, this research project aims to investigate the extent to which such tensions may also be present in the specific context of Qatar. English literature used in Arab English language classrooms often appears in the form of graded readers from Western publishers1 and inherently presents Western values, concepts, attitudes and behaviours to impressionable children. Can this Western English literature support the values of Islamic religion and culture? Who in fact, are the determinants of Islamic culture/values in the Qatari school context? From where does the power to influence curriculum come: Qatar’s governmental educational body, the Supreme Education Council (SEC), the school Board of Trustees (BOT), school leaders, influential parents, influential tribes, the local Imam or teachers? Further, do teachers feel there is a recognizable subset of English literature that satisfies

Christ Mass Carols Presented December 5, 12, & 19, 2004 Jason Allen Anderson, presenter A three-week series exploring the histories of our favorite Christmas hymns, carols, and spirituals. PREFATORY REMARKS From the start of the holiday shopping season through Christmas Eve, you will hear on average, the same 25 holiday songs about 700 times. Sound odd? Well, who wants to hear “Once in Royal David’s city” over the audio system at The Gap? No one. But they do want to hear “Jingle Bells” and “Silent Night.” Go figure. What is a carol? Carol is derived from the Middle English carole and was originally a short, choral dance. The subject matter of carols goes well beyond Christmas. There are New Year, Epiphany, Holy Week, Easter, Summer, Spring, Harvest, and Winter carols. The trouble is, we just don’t like to hear those much! Our three-week journey begins with pre-Victorian Christmas carols (12/5), continues with Victorian carols (12/12), and ends with distinctly American carols (12/19). If you enjoy this, let me know. If there are parts that just don’t work for you, let me know that as well. If I mention a term with which you’re not familiar, pop up your hand and ask me to explain. PRE-VICTORIAN CAROLS Until the Puritan revolution in England, Christmas was not simply a single feast day in the church year, but a season spanning from Christmas Day to the Feast of the Epiphany (the famous 12 Days of Christmas). 12 Days of celebration required many carols, most of which were passed on orally.

He not only races boats and wins multiple championship, he builds the boats and sells them to high-powered clientele. But his long-established mob ties catch up with him when Meyer Lansky forces him to build boats for his drug-running operations. Ben lives a double life, rubbing shoulders with kings and politicians while at the same time laundering money for the mob through his legitimate business.

How Multicultural Literature Effects African American Students' Literary Responses Abstract This study questions the impact of multicultural literature on reader responses. Research declares students are learning from a Eurocentric curriculum cultivated by canonical literature that many African American students do not relate to or understand. Six African American students constructed literary responses and focus group discussions after exposure to several multicultural genres in contrast to mainstream genres exposing the inability to interpret mainstream literature. The cultural disconnect from mainstream literature reinforced how significant cultural identification is for effective literacy development. Cultural validation is acknowledged based on the literature’s cultural relevance activating similar sociocultural experiences to help foster literary interpretations.

  • A Feast of Carols: American Musical Traditions Performed December 13, 1997
A Feast of Carols: American Musical Traditions Performed December 13, 1997 In 1843, Charles Dickens dashed off what he considered to be a potboiler to try to earn some quick money. A Christmas Carol was an instant success and its characters and story quickly entered the public domain. In 1871, Sir John Stainer published his Christmas Carols Old and New, which would become the standard melodies and harmonizations used by generations ever since. It is little wonder that when we think of Christmas, Victorian traditions inevitably spring to mind. There has, however, been a substantial American contribution to the musical traditions of Christmas which has been often overlooked. In this concert, we present a sampling of these wonderful American musical contributions from the colonial times onward. Daniel Pinkham (b. 1923) has been on the faculty of the New England Conservatory of Music since 1959, where he has been chair of the department of early music and is currently on the music history faculty. He studied composition with Walter Piston, Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, Arthur Honegger and Nadia Boulanger, harpsichord with Wanda Landowska and organ with E. Power Biggs. His 1958 Christmas Cantata remains one of his most popular works, and one in which his interest in early music is clearly evident. The Latin texts are taken from the traditional responses of the Christmas Masses. The first movement opens with a rather stentorian exhortation Shepherds, what have you seen? Tell us! before moving into a dance-like section, with the melody being passed antiphonally among the voice parts and, in a somewhat more ornamented form, the orchestra as well.

Conversation around this subject has, however, been superficial, lacking in both historical and empirical depth. The aim of this study, therefore, is to investigate the origin, methods and motivations of censorship in Nigeria with a view to deepening the understanding of this phenomenon. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected offline and online using document analysis and interviews were analysed by simple percentages and the constant comparative method. Findings indicate that book censorship began in 1805, over two centuries ago. Eleven methods, including, burning, banning and bombing have been employed and three major motivations (political, religious and socio-cultural) were identified.
