Through an exploration of voice, lyricism, kinesthetic performance, instrumentality and visual aesthetics, this course examines the “world wide underground” of black women’s sonic cultures, and it re-interrogates pop music subculture theories through the intersecting prisms of race, gender, class and sexuality. It considers the ways that black women musicians operate as socio- political and cultural intellectuals, and it reads their work as historically-situated cultural texts that resonate in multiple contexts. Throughout the semester, we will explore the ways in which black women culture workers have stylized and innovated disruptive and iconic performance practices within the context of American popular music culture, from the postbellum era through the present day. Part of the aim of this course is to trace the tensions between the enormous influence and ubiquity of the black female singing voice in globalized popular cultures and the ways in which a range of entertainers have nonetheless negotiated eccentric and “obscure” musical gestures that signaled and affirmed the existence of resistant musical aesthetics in the face of panopticism.

  • Tina Theory: Notes on Fierceness
Journal of Popular Music Studies, Volume 24, Issue 1, Pages 71–86 Tina Theory: Notes on Fierceness Madison Moore Yale University Touching Queerness Everything I know about being queer I learned from Tina Turner. More specifically, you might say that Ike and Tina’scover of “Proud Mary”— the soundtrack of my childhood—taught me, through camp performance, how to be a “Mary.” During the holiday parties at my great-grandmother Lucille “Big Momma” Jones’ house, for as long as I can remember, we kids ended up in the “Children’s Room” so the grown folks could curse, drink whiskey, smoke, laugh, and be as loose as they felt. The “Children’s Room” was not that special. It was usually a bedroom with a computer or television and a few board games, located next to the food which was always laid out buffet style. My favorite moments were when we would lip sync for our lives by doing drag karaoke, where my cousins and I would lock ourselves away and perform great popular music hits for an invisible audience. We pulled songs from Christina Aguilera or Britney Spears’ latest album to older joints that circulated long before our time, songs like “Stop! (In the Name of Love)” by Diana Ross and The Supremes and Patti LaBelle’s“Lady Marmalade.” But one song we kept in our catalog and that we seemed to have the most fun with was the Ike and Tina Turner cover of “Proud Mary.” Whenever we did “Mary” I insisted in being Tina. But what was it that drew me—a black gay boy rooted, like Tina, in Saint Louis, which is either the South or the Midwest depending on who

  • Tina Turner Is Having the Time of Her Lifepdf
Tina Turner Is Having the Time of Her Life She was the symbol of rock ’n’ roll stamina for 50 years. Her “Proud Mary” was 175 percent longer than the original, and John Fogerty didn’t even dance. She became a star with Ike Turner in her 20s, escaped his abuse in her 30s, fought her way up the pop charts in her 40s, toured the world through her 60s, and now she would like to sleep in. So I arrived at 2. Erwin Bach, Turner’s lovely German husband, fetched me in his SUV and delivered me to the house, which is named — did you think Tina Turner’s house would not have a name? — the Chateau Algonquin. It has cartoon palace energy: ivy snaking up the walls, gardeners manicuring the shrubs, a life-size two-legged horse sculpture suspended from a domed ceiling, a framed rendering of Turner as an Egyptian queen, a room stuffed with gilded Louis XIV style sofas and, sprawled on one of them, Tina Turner herself. Turner is 79 years old. She has been retired for 10 years, and she is still basking in all of the nothing she has to do. “I don’t sing. I don’t dance. I don’t dress up,” she told me. Even her wig — “a critical part of the Tina Turner look,” as she wrote in her recent memoir — has relaxed from its formerly perpendicular posture into a saucy shag. Her voice is as beguiling as ever, though it is now employed for different means. She slips into a rich continental accent when she calls for her husband, and she dives into her low, trembling rasp — “not the voice of a woman,” as she has put it — when she teases him.

Torgeir: Pensum muntlig engelsk 10.kl «What’s Love got to do with it?» Directed by Brian Gibson , Touchstone Pictures - 113 minutes - produced 1993 - The true life story of Tina Turner ANGELA BASSET as Tina Turner LAURENCE FISHBURNE as Ike Turner «This film was nominated for 2 Academy Awards and describes the the powerful true life story of rock’n roll legend Tina Turner.Born Anna Mae Bullock, a small-town girl with a one-of-a-kind voice, meets and falls in love with musician Ike Turner.Together, Ike and Tina skyrocket to the ultimate top of the music world, only to come crashing back to the earth as their life in the fast lane spins out of control. From the lowest lows Tina Turner has lived and survived it all. The film is filled with authentic high-energy music and electric performances.» This is how the film company introduces their film on their video cover. When the movie was released, it got excellent critics all over the world. It was described as «gripping, honest and revealing» At the same time the film contains a set of music hits from the sixties and seventies, showing why Ike and Tina Turner were such an amazing couple on stage. The fact that Tina Turner as a solo artist has had a huge comeback after their turbulent break-up, and is now called the grandmother of rock’n roll, is even more impressive. However, you do not have to like the music of Tina Turner to enjoy the movie. It helps of course, but the story itself is powerful and rough in itself.
