Introduction San Andreas Fault: an Overview
Introduction This volume is a general geology field guide to the San Andreas Fault in the San Francisco Bay Area. The first section provides a brief overview of the San Andreas Fault in context to regional California geology, the Bay Area, and earthquake history with emphasis of the section of the fault that ruptured in the Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. This first section also contains information useful for discussion and making field observations associated with fault- related landforms, landslides and mass-wasting features, and the plant ecology in the study region. The second section contains field trips and recommended hikes on public lands in the Santa Cruz Mountains, along the San Mateo Coast, and at Point Reyes National Seashore. These trips provide access to the San Andreas Fault and associated faults, and to significant rock exposures and landforms in the vicinity. Note that more stops are provided in each of the sections than might be possible to visit in a day. The extra material is intended to provide optional choices to visit in a region with a wealth of natural resources, and to support discussions and provide information about additional field exploration in the Santa Cruz Mountains region. An early version of the guidebook was used in conjunction with the Pacific SEPM 2004 Fall Field Trip. Selected references provide a more technical and exhaustive overview of the fault system and geology in this field area; for instance, see USGS Professional Paper 1550-E (Wells, 2004). Geodiversitas 35 (4): 815-940. http://dx.doi.org/g2013n4a5 ABSTRACT e newly discovered Upper Miocene to Upper Pliocene San Gregorio assem- blage of the Purisima Formation in Central California has yielded a diverse collection of 34 marine vertebrate taxa, including eight sharks, two bony fish, three marine birds (described in a previous study), and 21 marine mammals. Pinnipeds include the walrus Dusignathus sp., cf. D. seftoni, the fur seal Cal- lorhinus sp., cf. C. gilmorei, and indeterminate otariid bones. Baleen whales include dwarf mysticetes (Herpetocetus bramblei Whitmore & Barnes, 2008, Herpetocetus sp.), two right whales (cf. Eubalaena sp. 1, cf. Eubalaena sp. 2), at least three balaenopterids (“Balaenoptera” cortesi “var.” portisi Sacco, 1890, cf. Balaenoptera, Balaenopteridae gen. et sp. indet.) and a new species of rorqual (Balaenoptera bertae n. sp.) that exhibits a number of derived features that place it within the genus Balaenoptera. is new species of Balaenoptera is relatively small (estimated 61 cm bizygomatic width) and exhibits a comparatively nar- row vertex, an obliquely (but precipitously) sloping frontal adjacent to vertex, anteriorly directed and short zygomatic processes, and squamosal creases. -

Lankins Senior Seminar Paper June 3, 2009 2 Eighty six years after Spain had claimed the New World for themselves an English Privateer by the name of Francis Drake was becoming a thorn in their side. Called El Draque by the Spaniards, they hated to see him in their ports. His enthusiasm for damaging Spain overseas may have arisen from a hatred by Protestants of Catholics in Elizabethan England, or from his voyage to Nombre de Dios in 1572 where he lost two brothers, John and Joeseph1. After years of terrorizing the Spanish in the Caribbean, in 1577 Drake left England for the South Sea, now known as the Pacific Ocean. It is unclear as to the exact reason for the voyage. -

We’ll meet at the picnic tables at the end of the parking area for our 1:30 pm critique. The hill across from the beach has great views too, there’s a lighthouse as well.   Directions From Marin Take Hwy. 101 south to Sausalito exit 442, just before the Golden Gate Bridge. Turn right onto Alexander Avenue and go under the freeway. Turn left on Danes avenue, continue straight on Bunker Road through tunnel. Head towards the ocean, and park near the beach. 5 Geologic and Geotechnical Assessments 5.1 Regional and Site Geology Gilpin Geosciences, Inc. assessed the site conditions and prepared an engineering geologic evaluation of the project area, which is included as Appendix D. The site is located in the Coast Ranges geomorphic province that is characterized by northwest-southeast trending valleys and ridges. These are controlled by folds and faults that resulted from the collision of the Farallon and North American plates and subsequent shearing along the San Andreas Fault. The Merced Formation crops out in a broad trough that is partially exposed along the coastal bluffs of the site vicinity. It is of Plio-Pleistocene age (5 million to 10,000 years ago) and is characterized by sands and fine-grained deposits deposited in near-shore ocean environments with some units deposited onshore as dune fields. It is mapped as filling a northwest-southeast trending, fault-bounded basin that is exposed for approximately 3.8 miles along the sea cliffs from Mussel Rock on the south to the north end of Lake Merced. The Merced Formation is overlain by the Late Pleistocene age (125,000 to 10,000 years ago) Colma Formation, which is composed of sandy near-shore and beach deposits and recent dune sands. Several investigators have mapped the Merced Formation in the bluffs in the site vicinity. Hall (1966 and 1967) and Clifton and Hunter (1987) mapped the Merced Formation in detail to understand the age range and rapid changes in depositional environments preserved in the deposits outcropping along the Fort Funston / Thornton Beach coastal bluffs. -

Chapter 6 Responses in Marine Habitats Sea Level Rise: Intertidal organisms will respond to sea level rise by shifting their distributions to keep pace with rising sea level. It has been suggested that all but the slowest growing organisms will be able to keep pace with rising sea level (Harley et al. 2006) but few studies have thoroughly examined this phenomenon. As in soft sediment systems, the ability of intertidal organisms to migrate will depend on available upland habitat. If these communities are adjacent to steep coastal bluffs it is unclear if they will be able to colonize this habitat. Further, increased erosion and sedimentation may impede their ability to move. Waves: Greater wave activity (see 3.3.2 Waves) suggests that intertidal and subtidal organisms may experience greater physical forces. A number of studies indicate that the strength of organisms does not always scale with their size (Denny et al. 1985; Carrington 1990; Gaylord et al. 1994; Denny and Kitzes 2005; Gaylord et al. 2008), which can lead to selective removal of larger organisms, influencing size structure and species interactions that depend on size. However, the relationship between offshore significant wave height and hydrodynamic force is not simple. Although local wave height inside the surf zone is a good predictor of wave velocity and force (Gaylord 1999, 2000), the relationship between offshore Hs and intertidal force cannot be expressed via a simple linear relationship (Helmuth and Denny 2003). In many cases (89% of sites examined), elevated offshore wave activity increased force up to a point (Hs > 2-2.5 m), after which force did not increase with wave height. -

Within this wilderness was an extensive network of trails, many of which were created by the migration of the buffalo and used by the Native American Indians as hunting and trading routes. These primitive trails were at first crooked and narrow. Over time, the trails were widened, straightened and improved by settlers for use by horse and wagons. These became some of the first roads in the new land. After the American Revolution, the National Government began to realize the importance of westward expansion and trade in the development of the new Nation. As a result, an era of road building began. This period was marked by the development of turnpike companies, our earliest toll roads in the United States. In 1792, the first turnpike was chartered and became known as the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike in Pennsylvania. It was the first road in America covered with a layer of crushed stone. The boom in turnpike construction began, resulting in the incorporation of more than 50 turnpike companies in Connecticut, 67 in New York, and others in Massachusetts and around the country. A notable turnpike, the Boston-Newburyport Turnpike, was 32 miles long and cost approximately $12,500 per mile to construct. As the Nation grew, so did the need for improved roads. -

Along with Drake's Estero and Tomales Bay, Bolinas Lagoon provides an important coastal environment for fish, birds and mammals that is unparalleled along the northern California coast between San Francisco and Humboldt Bays. Open water, mudflat and marsh provide productive and diverse habitats for marine fishes, waterbirds, and marine mammals. Bolinas Lagoon is part of a much larger protected natural habitat complex that is part of or adjoins the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary (GFNMS, Pt. Reyes National Seashore, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Central California Coast Biosphere Preserve, Mt. Tamalpais State Park, and the Audubon Canyon Ranch Bird Sanctuary." Bolinas Lagoon. Located in California, less than 20 kilometers up the coast from San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, Bolinas Lagoon is a tidal embayment of open water, mudflat, and marsh which provides productive and diverse habitats for marine fishes, waterbirds, and marine mammals, and it is also part of a much larger protected natural habitat complex in the region. The site is located on the Pacific Flyway, which makes the Lagoon an ideal staging ground and stopover site for migratory birds, and the temperate climate provides wintering habitat for a wide array of ducks, geese, and shorebirds. The area supports a number of recreational uses, including the use of manually-powered watercraft. Bolinas Lagoon Open Space Preserve Marin County Open Space District Bolinas Lagoon is one of Marin County’s most significant natural resources. Its 1,100 acres, known as the Bolinas Lagoon Open Space Preserve and managed by the Marin County Open Space District, was designated a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention in 1998. -

Now as Brannon Ketcham, Fairfax 2008 has turned into 2009, it is clear that economic downturn is having an impact on Marge Macris, Mill Valley environmental projects around the State. -

Federal, state and local parklands abutting the Pacific Ocean provide a retreat from the hustle and bustle of Bay Area living. Coastal bluffs, beaches, wetlands, and more draw millions of international visitors for surfing, birding, kayaking, hiking, picnicking and more. Protected ranchlands are stewarded by multi-generation family farming operations which feed the region with milk, cheese, yogurt, butter, ice- cream and other products. Nestled within these vast swaths of open space are small but mighty communities that serve as both visitor hubs and homes to residents who cherish and value the unique sense of place. Climate change presents unprecedented threats to West Marin. Wetlands and beaches could be drowned with rising waters, and native plants and animal populations could plummet from changes in temperature and precipitation, ocean acidification, invasive species, and more. Coastal flooding and erosion threaten homes, roads, and utilities that are critical to the long- term sustainability of West Marin. Spearheaded by the Marin County Community Development Agency in 2014, Collaboration: Sea Level Rise Adaptation Response Team (C-SMART) is a partnership based community planning approach to solve some of these challenges. The Marin Ocean Coast Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment analyzed the vulnerabilities of natural and built assets from near- to long-term combined sea level rise and storm scenarios.
