Z Bent - Z Bent

Z Bent, Farzane Zamen’s new EP, incorporates elements of electronic music and Middle Eastern sounds - including Arabic strings, oud and darbuka. Farzane sings in English, while Habiba Makhlouf provides the Arabic and French lyrics. Farzane chose not to pen the songs in her native language of Farsi, explaining: “The concept is that women are suffering from the same problems in many Muslim communities, so I thought it’s better to be multilingual and understandable for more people”. With Z Bent, Farzane hopes to give voice to Middle Eastern women from diverse backgrounds and reveal paradoxes about perception and reality.

Z Bent is created by Farzane in collaboration with Glasgow-based musician Gavin Thompson, sound engineer Sam Smith, and Egyptian performer and singer Habiba Makhlouf.

Farzane Zamen is an Iranian artist; musician, producer, songwriter and singer. She has released more than 15 songs in Farsi and several records in English. Under Islamic law, as it is applied in Iran, women are not allowed to sing in public, resulting in Farzane having no opportunities to perform or publish her music legitimately in her home country, consequently, she works as an underground musician. Farzane composes and arranges all of her songs—most of which are available through the online music service, RadioJavan.com, with a total of 710,000 plays to date.

Mai Khôi Chem Gio - Dissent – Live at Phù sa Lab

Mai Khoi is a Vietnamese pop star, singer musician - and human rights activist. She has been playing music since the age of 12, when she was the pianist in a wedding band with her father, a music teacher, in the coastal city of Nha Trang. Drawing on a wide variety of influences, from traditional Vietnamese folk to blues, soul and rock, Mai Khoi seamlessly blends disparate styles and rhythms. Her music is also distinct in terms of its emotional range, her wide vocal register as well as the distinct tonal qualities of her voice. In 2010, Mai Khoi won Vietnam Television Song and Album of the Year Award, the highest award for song writing in the country. After winning the award, she shaved half her head and inscribed the letters 'VN' for 'Vietnam', the name of the song that won the competition, on one side of her head. For this she was harshly criticised by the country's conservative media establishment. No stranger to controversy, Mai Khoi is somewhat of an anomaly for a celebrity in a Communist country like Vietnam for having spoken out about sexuality, LGBT rights and violence against women.

Mai Khoi broke international headlines in 2016 after she became the first Vietnamese celebrity in history to nominate herself for the National Assembly (equivalent to congress) on a pro-democracy platform.

Sarah-Jane Summers- Solo

A versatile, free-thinking, impassioned performer, Sarah-Jane's unique style blends the lyricism of traditional music with the emotive rawness of improvisation. A tradition-bearer of the old Highland style of fiddling, she was taught by the late, great Donald Riddell (1908-1992), who learnt his fiddling from a relative of hers, Alexander Grant of Battangorm (1856-1942). She is now based in Norway and holds a masters degree in Norwegian traditional music and free improvisation from The Norwegian State Academy of Music.

Sarah-Jane’s unique skills have led her to perform at folk, jazz, rock, contemporary music and noise festivals worldwide with some of the biggest names within the Scottish and Norwegian music scenes, including Norwegian pop band Highasakite. She has also performed and recorded with top Canadian contemporary music string quartet, The Bozzini Quartet and was a founder member of the Scottish chamber folk group, RANT, with whom she recorded two albums.

1816 is a new exciting Norwegian alternative pop band consisting of two renowned and experienced musicians — Audun Ellingsen (double bass) and Wenche Losnegård (vocals). 1816 has shaped a fresh and unique voice within the alternative pop, art pop genre. The year 1816 is also famously known as the Year Without a Summer, which has inspired both the sound and lyrical universe of the band. 1816 line-up is strengthened by cellist Gregor Riddell (Radiohead, Björk) and drummer Erik Nylander (Ola Kvernberg Trio, Kirsti Huke Quartet). Having created a breed of chamber pop both stripped down and richly layered, 1816 builds on the band members’ broad musical background. This makes the live performance a characteristic and captivating experience. 1816 wishes to comfort and disturb, please and torment. The band seeks to express music with depth and quality that can reach wide—but at the same time, leave little room for audiences to feel indifferent. 1816’s ‘The Message’, is based on a reinterpretation of treasured Norwegian poet Inger Hagerup. The animation is a tribute to the co-operation of Inger Hagerup and Paul René Gauguin, and their iconic book of poems for children: ‘Så rart’ (‘How Strange’).

Gro Kjelleberg Solli - Stien eg fann

In March 2018 Gro introduces her first solo release on Ta: lik records. Gro has been performing vocal folk music for over 20 years, and has undertaken a wide repertoire of songs she has used in concert shows . On the solo album and the concerts she has Øystein Sandbukt (guitar), Marit Aspås (cello) and Erik Fostervoll (trøorgel). Øystein is a freelance guitarist and district musician (Mømusikarane) based in Sunndal, Marit is a freelance cellist in Trondheim, with TrondheimSolistane as her biggest missionary. Erik is a cultural school teacher and office in Nesset municipality. Everyone has grown up at Nordmøre and, as musicians, is inspired by local music. Here you get comforting hymns and nice songs. The repertoire on the album is from Nordmøre and Romsdal, Os and Røros, as well as self-written songs such as "The path I found" and "The neighbor's rocking chair" .

Maria Solheim - Stories of New Mornings

For Maria Solheim it all started with the KKV label in 2001 when she released her debut album “Barefoot”. Since then she has given us the albums “Behind closed doors”, “Frail” and “Will there be spring”. After this she has explored other paths and established a successful and critically-acclaimed career, growing as an artist every step along the way. Now she is coming home again, full circle, as she continues her career with KKV. Solheim has experienced and done much since her debut in 2001. She was nominated for the Spellemann award for her album “Frail” in 2004, in the category “Female artist of the year”. This album was also nominated as one of the best singer-songwriter albums in 2004 by the British music magazine Mojo. She has had art exhibitions, written poetry, translated and published books. With her in the studio this time she has a powerful team of musicians. Tortusa - Inge Breistein - Mind Vessel

Mind Vessel” is an album by ambient artist Tortusa and saxophonist Inge W. Breistein. After releasing the album “I Know This Place - The Eivind Aarset Collages” on Jazzland Recordings in 2016, electronic musician Tortusa has returned with a collaborative album with saxophone player Inge W. Breistein. The album is mainly composed of saxophone recordings that have been sampled and processed through electronic software and hardware. Larger improvised sections and partial composed melodies blend through rhythmic repetition, harmonic textures, and ambience. The ambience plays an important role and comes naturally from recording in various big rooms at the Cultural Centre and former beer brewery Tou Scene in Stavanger. The sound of these rooms is part of the composition, just as much as the notes being played. The contrast and interplay of natural organic sounds meeting electronic manipulation is an investigation of key interest to the duo. The album's electronic-experimental sound references genres such as electronica, ambient, Nordic jazz, and minimalism. Inspiration has been found in bands and artists such as Oneotrix Point Never, Xploding Plastix, Brian Eno, Biosphere, Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, Flying Lotus, and Jon Hopkins. The release tour for this album will cover Norway, England and Germany. On stage the duo vary between playing improvised stretches and composed songs. Tortusa live-samples Breistein's saxophone and uses these recordings as his sound pallet for the concert. This creates a very spontaneous performance as most of the electronic sounds are recorded and processed live. Aside from live sampling, Tortusa also uses loops and pre-recorded material, while Breistein uses effects to extend the sound of his saxophone.

Splashgirl - Sixth Sense (cd og vinyl)

With the arrival of a sixth album, which continues the band’s relationship with the inspirational engineer/musician Randall Dunn, famed for his work with Earth and Sunn O))), it’s evident that Splashgirl has reached the end of one span of creativity and begun to enter another, ascending to a whole new level. For ’Sixth Sense' is a breakthrough project characterized by a radical freedom of approach to composition and performance. At times, the results can seem closer to the sculptural manipulation of pure sound than to the workaday norms of more conventional music-making. The wonderfully immanent, in-your-face sonic density of the album’s mile-wide dynamic range also represents a remarkably successful attempt to capture the extremes of the audio spectrum. In short, ‘Sixth Sense’ sounds immense. But if Splashgirl’s journey from piano, bass and drums post-jazz trio to out-there experimentalists might seem all but complete, the delicate interplay of acoustic instruments continues to perform a vital role. It’s an interplay that opens and closes ’Sixth Sense’, whose circular structure departs from, and returns to, a predominantly acoustic sound-world. Minimalistic plinky- plonk piano, thrumming double bass and splashy drums and cymbals become the jumping-off points for further sonic adventures to be explored through both live improvisation and post-production treatments, with any musical statement remaining essentially provisional until finally fixed - caught in the net - by the editing process. These signature sounds and their electronic manipulations are also to be heard alongside a myriad of musical influences, from musique concrete and leftfield post-rock to cinematic echoes of all sorts of things: 'Blade Runner'-like retro-futurism, say; the pre-digital electric-fusion of 'Black Market'-era Weather Report; synth-driven Tangerine Dream-style Krautrock. The result is a thrilling suite of seven separate pieces that can be listened to either incrementally or as one long-form work where the sheer density of sound and gradual accretion of meaning seems to deepen the longer it goes on, achieving by the end a kind of hard-won epic grandeur that is very impressive, moving even. The range of Splashgirl’s influences and reference points, and the tastefulness with which they have been chosen and employed, also serve to reinforce the sense that there’s a real creative intelligence at work here, and that the listener can relax with confidence into whatever new journey they are being taken on. There might be no clear destination in view. But it will definitely be interesting. ‘Sixth Sense’ was partly recorded in Iceland by Randall Dunn, at the same 2015 sessions that produced ‘Hibernation’, and partly by Splashgirl at the trio’s self-built Kennel Collective studio in Oslo, in March, 2017. The album was mixed by Johnny Skalleberg at Amper Tone, Oslo, and mastered by Espen Hoydalsvik at Tinnitus Mastering, Oslo.
