  • An Online Bibliography 1859-2011
Anabaptism and Mission An Online Bibliography 1859-2011 Edited by Chad Mullet Bauman and James R. Krabill (First Edition) Revised and Updated by Joseph F. Pfeiffer Introduction to the Updated, Online Edition (2011) The following online electronic resource represents my efforts over the last few years, as a student at Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary (AMBS), with the sponsorship and partnership of the AMBS Mission Studies Center, directed by Walter W. Sawatsky, to update the first print edition of this work: Anabaptism and Mission: A Bibliography, 1859-2000 (Elkhart, IN: Mennonite Mission Network, 2002), compiled and edited through the tremendous and tireless efforts of Chad M. Bauman and James R. Krabill. Throughout the ongoing project thus far, the researching and compiling of sources was a humbling task, as the body of bibliographic materials on this subject never remains static. Not only has the project entailed updating entries of authors and sources listed in the first edition, as well new authors and scholars that have come on the scene in the first decade of the 21 st century, but several more sources even from the 20th century were found and added, as the development of electronic communication and information technology has made a great deal more information and data available, even since the time of the first publication. Furthermore, the author has continued the trend of conceiving of Anabaptist as inherently broader than the mainline Mennonite denominations. Thus, including more materials from other Anabaptists traditions, such as the often over-looked Apostolic Christian tradition (see entries for Sheetz and Donais), as well as the Brethren in Christ Church, allows for the vision of a broader and more contextually diversified vision of Anabaptism to emerge, such as in contexts of the Amazon basin and New Guinea Highlands.

  • Peter Webster
Peter Webster George Bell, John Masefield and The Coming of Christ: context and significance [An article published in Humanitas. The Journal of the George Bell Institute 10:2 (2009). This version is the last version before typesetting (September 2008), and as such does not include points raised at proof stage. More details on Humanitas may be found at http://www.georgebellinstitute.org.uk/ ] At Whitsuntide 1928, Canterbury cathedral saw four sell-out performances of a newly written Nativity Play by John Masefield, The Coming of Christ. With costumes designed by Charles Ricketts, and with music composed and directed by Gustav Holst, the national profile of the event was very high.1 The commission also stands as Bell‟s first successful attempt to commission a new work of art for the church, and his own assessment of the event‟s significance was clear. Writing to inform the cast of the forced postponement of a repeat performance in 1929, Bell wrote: But if we cannot meet this year we may rejoice that last year we were indeed creators. We have lighted a torch which nothing can extinguish and have given a witness to the fellowship of Religion and Poetry and Art, which will go on telling in ways far beyond our own imagination. A great debt of gratitude was owed to all involved, not only by Bell himself „but the Church, and everyone who cares for things lovely and noble and of good report‟.2 Preaching in 1953 at an anniversary 1 A brief account is given in R.C.D. Jasper, George Bell.

  • Table 2 Historical Demises Since My Last Report in 2019. in the Following Table I Have Summarised the Demises Records for 1648 Former Students of the RHS
Table 2 Historical demises since my last report in 2019. In the following table I have summarised the demises records for 1648 former students of the RHS. Almost all of these follow my research using Family History sites and other sources to determine whether a former student on the InTouch database is still alive or dead. I have always felt it is important to recognise and remember the passing of those former students even if it was many years ago. These records will be entered on to the database and so complete and “close the file”. These past twelve months I have primarily concentrated on the late-1920s to the mid-1930s. In the next year I will continue investigating former old boys from the years 1936 - 1946 (and beyond if time permits). A full record of all known demised former men and women who attended the RHS will be placed in the Digital Archive and updated each year. At the time of writing we now have death records for 3177. • Toward the Trinity: Transforming Theology and Lives of the Ministers in the Worldwide Church of God/Grace Communion International
TOWARD THE TRINITY: TRANSFORMING THEOLOGY AND LIVES OF THE MINISTERS IN THE WORLDWIDE CHURCH OF GOD/GRACE COMMUNION INTERNATIONAL by Eric Tracy Wilding A thesis submitted to Wycliffe College and the Faculties of the Toronto School of Theology in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Ministry awarded by Wycliffe College and the University of Toronto © Copyright by Eric Tracy Wilding 2012 Toward the Trinity: Transforming Theology and Lives of the Ministers in the Worldwide Church of God/Grace Communion International Eric Tracy Wilding Doctor of Ministry Wycliffe College of the University of Toronto 2012 ABSTRACT The Worldwide Church of God (WCG) was a sect founded by Herbert W. Armstrong. It held a wide array of heterodox doctrines and practices. This started to change in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Among the key changes was the shift from a bitheistic theology to a trinitarian theology. This dissertation explores the effects of this shift on the lives of twelve ministers in the WCG, which is now called Grace Communion International. Specifically it examines the impact that the doctrinal change had on their understanding of and relationship with God, self and congregation. Chapter one gives an introduction the research. It presents a historical, theological, theoretical, biographical and ministerial context for the study. It also gives a general introduction to the participants in the research. ii Chapter two provides and analysis and integration of the historical context of Herbert W. Armstrong, the founder of the WCG, and the denomination. It sets the context in which Armstrong’s religious beliefs grew and were transformed.

  • Dalit Christians and Caste Consciousness in Pakistan
DALIT CHRISTIANS AND CASTE CONSCIOUSNESS IN PAKISTAN A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Theological and Religious Studies By Sara Singha, M.T.S Washington, DC April 23, 2015 Copyright 2015 by Sara Singha All Rights Reserved ii DALIT CHRISTIANS AND CASTE CONSCIOUSNESS IN PAKISTAN Sara Singha, M.T.S. Thesis Advisor: Ariel Glucklich, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This study explores caste discrimination in Pakistan against untouchable (Dalit) converts to Christianity. During the nineteenth century in India, many Dalits converted to Christianity to escape caste persecution. In the 1870s in Punjab, a mass movement to Protestant Christianity flourished among the Dalit Chuhra caste. The Chuhras were the largest menial caste in Punjab and engaged in degrading occupations including sweeping and sanitation work. By the 1930s, almost the entire Chuhra caste converted to Protestant Christianity. In 1947, during the partition of India, the majority of Chuhra converts in Punjab became part of the Protestant community in Pakistan. After Partition, many uneducated Chuhras were confined to menial jobs in the sanitation industry. Today, the stigma of Dalit ancestry is a distinct feature of social discrimination against Chuhra Christians in Pakistan. ‘Caste consciousness’ in Pakistan is connected to norms of purity and pollution. While not as pronounced as India, purity and pollution in Pakistan relates to the concept of pak (clean) and na-pak (unclean). Because of degrading occupations as sweepers and sanitation workers, many Chuhra Christians in Pakistan are associated with ‘pollution.’ This leads to multiple forms of social discrimination.

  • David Brazendale, Lancashire's Historic Halls, Second Edition
REVIEWS David Brazendale, Lancashire’s historic halls, Second edition (revised). Lancaster: Carnegie Publishing, 2005. [ix], 277 pp. £10.00 pbk. ISBN 1 85936 106 4. This is the second edition of a book first published in 1994 and is primarily a work of popular history, rather than a history of buildings. The author has used significant Lancashire buildings as pegs on which to hang important aspects of the history of the county. For example, the account of Speke Hall is partly a description of the house and a history of the Norris family, but also deals with the involvement of the Norrises’ in the affairs of the rising borough of Liverpool. This technique starts with the casual interest that the local or the tourist might have in ‘great houses’, and gently leads it into the history of the county. In this way Mr Brazendale shows himself the consummate adult educator. The book is beautifully illustrated and produced, is priced very reason ably, and is a credit to both author and publisher. It is not a work of original research, except in the case of Rufford Old Hall, and does contain, inevitably, both mistakes and omissions. For example, in his account of Whalley Abbey the author states that the founder of the monastery at its original site, Stanlow, was lohn de Lacy, baron of Halton and constable of Chester castle. In fact he was constable of the earldom of Chester, a much more prestigious office. More significantly, he omits to mention that Whalley Abbey, very unusually for a Cistercian foundation, had quasi- episcopal jurisdiction over the morals and religious life of lay people— the inhabitants of the forests of north-east Lancashire.
