ST MARGARET MARY’S UNIFORM POLICY Revised: January 2021 Revised on: January 2022

Our uniform policy is founded on inclusivity. In its essence, the purpose of a school uniform is to enable all students to be included in the community and identifiable as St Margaret Mary's College. Rules and regulations regarding the wearing of the school uniform are enforced to ensure that students are not excluded on the basis of their access to resources. Wearing the school uniform correctly and consistently within the school grounds and in the wider community is a positive representation of pride in our College.

• To ensure our new College uniform is well presented please wash the dress on a gentle cycle to reduce crushing the fabric and reduce ironing. Always dry on a coat hanger in the shade and iron with a hot steam iron. The white collar needs to be white and so use spray stain remover regularly. Discourage the use of tinted sunscreens and foundation as these will mark the white collar irreversibly. Remove the tie when washing. The tie should be washed occasionally but remember to remove all badges first.

• Friday is our formal uniform day where all students will be required to wear their full formal academic uniform on Friday. If students have HPE or Dance lessons on that day, they will be required to change into their sports uniform for those lessons. Class teachers will give instructions with regard to these requirements.

• Students are required to wear their hats whenever they are outside the classroom. The only exception is when students are in the Benedictine Place. Students are required to have a hat with them at all times and must wear the sports hat with the sports uniform and the academic hat with the academic uniform. Students will be issued with a Uniform Notice for wearing the incorrect hat with the uniform they are wearing. Sports hats should be washed occasionally and the SMMC embroidery should be white and the House colour.

• Black school shoes should be black. Scuffed shoes can be buffed with some boot polish which comes in a variety of products for your convenience.

• Students and parents are reminded that the girls are only permitted to wear plain small gold or silver studs or sleepers as earrings (two pairs allowed in each ear lobe.) Coloured stones, pearls, larger hoops or studs are not allowed. Students who have a piercing in any other area of the ear or body (that is visible) will go to the time-out room until the piercing is removed.

• A Uniform Adjustment Notice will be issued to students outlining any uniform issues that need extended time to be rectified (eg Uniform hemlines adjusted). The notice will have a specific date for the issue to be rectified and needs to be signed/acknowledged by parents. Failure to make the changes by the required date may result in the student being timed-out of classes until the Uniform Policy is adhered to.

A Uniform Adjustment Notice will be sent home requiring a long term change to uniform when unacceptable uniform issues are raised. One week will be given to make the appropriate change, unless otherwise negotiated via the Assistant Principal, Pastoral Care.

Students in the incorrect uniform will be given reflection time by receiving a yellow Uniform Notice. Uniform variations are only issued at College discretion with a valid note from home, requiring a variation.

FRIDAY ACADEMIC UNIFORM Friday is a formal uniform day where all students will be required to wear their full formal academic uniform. If students have HPE or Dance lessons on that day, they will be required to change into their sports uniform for those lessons. Class teachers will give instructions with regard to these requirements.

HATS Students must have a hat at all times to meet sun safety requirements. Uniform Notices will be issued to students without hats. Students are required to wear the sports hat with the sports uniform and the academic hat with the academic uniform. Uniform Reflection Notices will apply.

JEWELLERY A limited amount of jewellery is permitted: a watch, a plain ring ONLY, a plain chain with or without a cross or religious medal, two pairs of earrings (small silver/gold studs or small sleepers only). Students with inappropriate jewellery piercings will be asked to remove it immediately. Inability to do so will result in time-out from classes until the item is removed.

HAIR Hair is to be tied back. Natural hair tones only (i.e, purple, crimson red, green, blue etc. are not permitted). Students with non-natural hair colours may receive time-out from classes until the matter is resolved. Colourful clips, ribbons or flowers in the hair are not permitted. Headbands and ribbons must be either the colour of hair or College colours (blue or white).

BODY ART Tattoos or other forms of body art must be covered when at school, at any school events, or when in public in the College uniform. A light discreet bandage would be sufficient. Students may be withdrawn from classes until this is resolved.

CHEWING GUM This is TOTALLY PROHIBITED on College property and at school related activities. No student should chew gum while in the College uniform. A Cleaning Reflection will apply.

PERSONAL HYGIENE Due to associated health risks, students are not to bring aerosol deodorant spray cans to school. Roll on deodorants provide an environmentally friendly alternative. Aerosol cans will be confiscated.

BEFORE AND AFTER HOURS Students are asked not to attend shops in school uniform. If this is unavoidable, then full College uniform must be worn, including appropriate footwear. On any day when students have an early finish, students are not permitted to visit shops in uniform unless accompanied by a parent. No student is to be at shops in uniform during normal hours unless on an excursion or for a school event (e.g. 8.35am – 3.05pm).
