We now have the great opportunity to chart the territories between disciplines and cultures, to map forgotten or as yet undiscovered areas of thought, culture and writing. The monographs and collections from Leipzig try to break out of unproductive oppositions say between East and West, North and South, humanities and sciences, or academic discourse and journalism. Instead we are encouraging the emergence of triangular constellations, such as between Newfoundland, Scotland and West Africa, or between travelogue, science and women’s writing, or between alchemy, prehistory and bicycles. Pioneer studies on contemporary authors will be another asset of this series. The focus of Leipzig Explorations is on literatures in English, albeit with a strong emphasis on comparative and interdisciplinary studies. We particularly encourage essayistic writing that combines academic knowledge with passion and curiosity. started work on this project in 1996, and the study which follows was finally accepted as a doctoral dissertation by the University of Leipzig in 2002. My interest in Alasdair Gray’s work, and in Scottish literature and culture, goes back further than that, however. Ultimately, my parents—to whom this book is dedicated—are to ‘blame’ for having enkindled in me a lasting love for ‘English’ literature and culture in the widest sense. As translators of literature, they were involved professionally but also enthusiastically with English-language culture at a time and place (in East Germany when it was the German Democratic Republic) where it was difficult and sometimes dangerous to get hold of some of the books from that other part of the world, and almost impossible to actually go there. They managed to do both, however, and shared their appreciation and enthusiasm for that foreign (at that time almost exotic) culture with me—and they have continued to support me in all imaginable ways (including my mother’s struggling through the manuscript of this work). My debt and gratitude to them is really beyond words. I suspect that my upbringing in the GDR and the first-hand experience of what we call the Wende here in Leipzig in 1989 might have made me even more sympathetic and alert to the

    Compliance Versus Defiance: The Characters’ Response to Social Structures in Alasdair Gray’s Lanark and 1982 Janine Markéta Gregorová Palacký University, Olomouc, Czech Republic Abstract The article focuses on two novels by Alasdair Gray, Lanark: A Life in Four Books (1981) and 1982 Janine (1984), in particular on the ways in which the characters are influenced by externally imposed social structures and the attitudes they assume in dealing with them. The adverse workings of official institutions, such as education and employment facilities, are received with compliance on the part of the protagonist in 1982 Janine but meet with resistance from both of the two mirror protagonists in Lanark. In the context of the standing of Scotland within the United Kingdom, institutions represent the interests of the powerful English majority rather than the dependent Scottish minority, and therefore any act of rebellion against them is charged with a subversive potential. Besides the political implications, the article explores the social dimensions of the novels and illustrates by means of individual examples the means used by the powerful to exploit the powerless, as well as the strategies the latter employ to defend themselves. Craig Linwood Bachelor of Arts (Honours) School of Humanities Arts, Education and Law Griffith University Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy February 2017 Abstract. The impetus of the thesis emerged through an academic interest in how experimental uses of typography and illustration functioned as a method of narration within literature. This was followed by investigations into the use of typography and illustration yielded that while there is a growing field of literary study examining non-linguistic elements within narratives, there are few studies into typography and illustration and how an author utilises and develops them as a method of narration. In light of this, this thesis examines attempts to expand upon the act of narration through the use of typography and illustration in both experimental and common forms. This is focused through Scottish artist Alasdair Gray and three of his novels: Lanark: A Life in Four Books, 1982, Janine and Poor Things. While Gray’s novels are contemporary his use of typography and illustration engages in wider print cultures that facilitated experiment into literature involving the manipulation of typography, illustration and the traditions of narrative. Experimentation in literature from 1650 to 1990, be it through illustration, typography or the composition of narrative, often emerged when printing practice and its product were no longer seen as efficient at communicating to modernising audiences. This act often coincided with larger changes within print cultures that affected laws, politics, the means of distribution, views of design i and methods of distribution.

  • The Stevenson Circle
    The Stevenson Circle Archer, William (1856-1924), journalist and critic. He was dramatic critic for Figaro, and later for the World and the Star. An admirer of Ibsen's work, he was instrumental in introduc- ing Ibsen's plays to the British public. Archer and RLS fre- quently corresponded, and Archer wrote a perceptive obituary, 'In Memoriam R.L.S.' (New Review, January 1895). Balfour, Dr Lewis (1777-1860), grandfather of RLS. RLS took his middle name of Lewis (later Louis) from his grandfather. As a boy RLS delighted in visiting Colin ton Manse, the home of his grandfather from 1823 to 1860. In his essay 'The Manse', included in MP, he gives an affectionate tribute to his recol- lections of the house and of his grandfather. Balfour, Sir Thomas Graham (1858-1929). One of RLS's many cousins, Balfour made his home at Vailima during the last two and a half years of RLS's life. His biography, published in 1901, is an extremely readable, competent and well-researched account. It suffers, however, from having been prepared so soon after Stevenson's death and is insufficiently detached from the protective influence of his widow. It remains an in- dispensable account of RLS and his circle, though inevitably some of Balfour's judgements have been superseded by later scholarship. Barrie, Sir James Matthew (1860-1937), novelist and playright. His first novel The Little Minister (1891), was much admired by RLS. Barrie was also the author of A Window in Thrums, Margaret Ogilvy, and Sentimental Tommy. His plays include The Admirable Crichton, Peter Pan and What Every Woman Knows.
