Coache s report – Scottish National Age Group Championships (SNAGS) – June 2014

The newly opened Aberdeen Aquatics Centre played host to 's largest and highest standard annual age group competition - the Scottish National Age Group Championships Six Aberdeen Dolphin swimmers attended as part of a particularly strong COAST composite squad to battle it out over the 5 day competition. These swimmers were Luke Stuart, Arron Esson, Rebecca Bews, Eddie Watson, Dan Gibson and Eryn Cole (all Gold Squad).

Day 1 The day 1 heats saw Rebecca Bews, Luke Stuart and Dan Gibson putting in strong performances in the 100m freestyle, 200m breaststroke and 100m backstroke respectively with Dan setting a best time and dipping under 65 seconds for the first time. The afterno on saw Arron Esson swimming in both the 11-13 age group 200m breaststroke and 100m backstroke qualifying for the finals comfortably in both events. Later that evening Arron returned to the pool to compete in the final of the backstroke where he smashed his best time to finish in a time of 1.06.69 and achieve 2nd place overall behind English swimmer Daniel Morley. As fastest finishing Scot this meant that Arron was later awarded the Scottish National Age Group title making him the first swimmer training within the Dolphin structure to win a national title since Gold Squad was formed. Coast Dolphins also put in an array of great performances with Eilidh Duthie being the highest finisher for the girls with a 5th place finish in the girls 15-16 years 200m butterfly. On the boys side, team swimmers Andy McGovern and Jack Ness won Gold medals in their 100m backstroke finals with Louis Houette and Jack Watson also making finals.

Day 2

The morning heats of day 2 saw Eryn Cole swim her first event and put in a strong performance to finish 36th in the girl's 14 years 200m backstroke heats. The afternoon saw Arron Esson back in action swimming in both the 200m freestyle and 100m butterfly heats, achieving close to PB times in both events and qualifying in 6th place for the final in the butterfly. Later that evening Arron raised his game yet again and crushed his previous best time to achieve a second medal finishing 3rd in a time of 1.05.62. Coast Dolphins Jack Watson and Felix Gifford finaled in the 200m freestyle and Eilidh secured bronze in the 200m backstroke. Jack Ness, Euan Dunbar and Felix all won medals in the 100m butterfly with Jack posting the fastest time of the three winning Gold in the boy's 16-17 age group with a time of 56.57. Another notable performance came from Ailsa Duthie who qualified for her first Scottish Age Group final to finish 7th in the girls 14 years 100m breaststroke

Day 3 The heats on day 3 saw Gold's Eddie Watson undertake his first event and qualify for the final of the 16-17 years 50m freestyle. Dan Gibson competed in the same event finishing in a best time of 25.55 seconds but unfortunately missed the final by an agonizing 0.01 seconds. Rebecca Bews competed in the equivalent girls event making use of her excellent start and underwater skills to finish in 13th place in the 15-16 age group. Arron competed in the afternoon heats of the 200m backstroke finishing in a time of 2.29.97. Returning to the pool later that night Eddie finished in a respectable 5th place in the 50m freestyle final just 0.19 seconds behind the winner in 24.65 seconds, with Coast Dolphin Jack Ness winning the silver. Bronze medals were achieved by Coast Dolphins Joe Yeoman in the 200m backstroke and Jack Watson in the 400m freestyle.

Day 4 The morni ng heats saw Eryn competing in her favoured 100m backstroke (finishing in 25th place), Luke and Dan in the 100m breaststroke (finishing in 26th and 23rd place respectively) and both Eddie and Dan in the 4x100m freestyle relay heats. Eddie would return later that evening to split a massive 53.29 third leg of the COAST 4x100m freestyle relay final and secure the bronze medal for the team. For the Coast Dolphins Eilidh Duthie won silver in the 100m backstroke in a superb time of 1.04.66.

Day 5 The final day proved to be an exciting climax to what had already been the most competitive and highest standard age group

meets of the year. Back in action were Eddie (competing in the 100m freestyle and 15-18 4x100m medley relay), Rebecca (100m butterfly), Arron (100m freestyle and 11-14 4x100m medley relay) and Dan (4x100m medley relay) with Eddie qualifying comfortably for the 100m freestyle final. In the final of the 100m freestyle, Eddie pulling out a storming second lap to finish in joint 3rd place obtaining his second medal of the championships in a new personal best time of 54.07. In the final of the relays Arron Esson rounded out his championships with a Gold medal in the 4x100m medley relay final and the 15-18 years 4x100m medley achieved a fantastic 4th place.

Overall the meet was a huge success with both Aberdeen Dolphin squad swimmers and Coast Squad swimmers achieving a multitude of personal best performances and medals. More importantly it was a hugely positive experience and one that every athlete that attended will cherish." Tom Lindsay

Commonwealth Games 2014 Demanding to compete in and exhilarating to watch, swimming has been in every Commonwealth Games since they began in

1930. This year a number of Scottish athletes successfully qualified

for the Commonwealth Games, Aberdeen Dolphin Club members

past and present included

Andrew (Andy) McGovern and Jack Ness. Hannah Miley and Robbie Renwick also completed from the local area. Tough battles resulted in impressively fast races with British and

Commonwealth Games records broken. Swimming medal summary:

Regardless of all the training, athletes have it all to complete for or lose on fractions of a

second. A misplaced breath or bad pacing can mean the difference in winning or losing.

Welldone to all those who qualified and took part and thank you for inspiring a generation of

children to replicate your achievements.
