BEFORE YOU LEAVE FOR ITALY 2019 - TIPS FROM DANNY GENUNG

BELOW IS A LIST OF REMINDERS FOR OUR UPCOMING TRIP TO ITALY. SOME MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU PERSONALLY, BUT IT IS GOOD TO LOOK AS YOU MAY NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT SOME OF THESE ITEMS. GOOD PACKING AND SEE YOU IN ROME!

MONEY PREPARATION

Notify your credit card company about your travels – Most credit card companies have fraud alerts when your card is used unexpectedly. Call the number on the back of the card to let them know where you will be traveling and for how long, to avoid any hiccups with using your card on vacation. Know if your credit card has foreign transaction fees – Again, surprise fees are always unwelcomed so check to see if it will cost you extra to use your credit cards on your trip. Check the exchange rate of where you are going – This allows you to know generally how much things cost in USD so you know roughly what you are paying for. Go to a bank or ATM in the country you are visiting – Currency conversion booths at the airport will almost always offer terrible exchange rates. Visiting an ATM will give you the exchange rate of the day and any applicable fee the bank charges which will still be better than the currency conversion stores. Carry a small amount of cash with you – Having cash on hand makes many transactions easier. Most restaurants and stores accept credit cards but some of the smaller street vendors will not. You can get this from your bank before you go. Pay Bills – Arrange so you have your bills scheduled as to avoid any unpleasant late payment surprises when you come home.

CAMERAS

Get some practice before you go – Having a great camera to capture memories is a great idea. Getting some practice in and knowing the camera would make the memories even better. Be prepared – Bring extra batteries, chargers, and extra storage for all the pictures you will be taking. Please Note: We are bringing along our professional photographer and he is happy to take pictures with you in them, along with group shots. You will get ALL the pictures that we take, so we kindly ask that when we are in crowded locations that you give first access to our photographer. If you do not want to be in pictures, please let us know and when we take photos or group shots, please step out of the way.

PACKING

Packing and unpacking – On this adventure we are covering a lot of ground and seeing a ton of incredible sites. Due to the logistical nature of this trip, you will be moving hotels 5 times, so it is critical to be highly organized with your packing. The solution that we love the most is using Packing Cubes. Danny never travels without them. o Save space with packing cubes – Packing cubes are great space savers for this trip. Click Here For Link Place to store clothes – It will be a great idea to bring a dirty laundry bag on this trip. Laundry – For the most part we are not in hotels long enough to utilize their laundry services effective so please back clothes according (dry fit, multiple layers, and easy wash items). We will speak with the hotel upon each check in and let you know if they will be able to accommodate laundry during out stay. Clothing Choices – o Dry fit clothing – Dry fit clothing can be found on athletic wear and is used for the moisture wicking, quick drying properties. They are readily available in most major clothing outlets and all athletic clothing stores. o Multiple layers – This is so clothes can be mixed and matched easily for better comfort if the weather changes. o Clothes for entry in churches – Knees and shoulders must be covered to enter religious buildings. o Broken in walking shoes – There is nothing better than having a nice, well-broken in pair of walking shoes for these tours. o Shoes with support – Avoid open toed shoes and try to have shoes that have good heel and arch support. Handy items to have – o Sunblock wipes and mini bottle of sunscreen that easily fits into bags or purses. o Disinfectant wipes o Water bottle with a filter o Sunglasses and a hat o Small bag, sling, or fanny pack ▪ Great for holding snacks and easy to reach items like hand sanitizer ▪ This must be smaller than a backpack for sites like the Vatican that check your bag upon entry. If you bring a small backpack, it will most likely be checked upon entry.

HEALTH

Start walking now and exercise – There will be much to explore in Italy and we would want you to start easily by being ready for the walking that will occur on the trip. Please check with your physician on what the best steps would be. Pre-hydrated for the flight and stay hydrated during the flight – The best way that we have found to combat jet lag is to stay hydrated before and during the trip. Move around on the flight – During the flight, standing up and moving will help ease the transition when you get off the plane. Adjust sleep schedule before arrival – For time zone purposes, Rome is 9 hours ahead of the Los Angeles when it comes to time. If you have the luxury of being able to adjust your sleep schedule several days before arrive, it would help with jetlag. Danny always starts trying to go to be earlier each night for a week to get prepared.

ELECTRICITY AND ELECTRICAL OUTLETS

European Voltage – Voltage for outlets is 220V. North American voltage is generally 110V. Therefore, you will need a converter for your travels. Adapters will be necessary to adapt your plug into the outlet, but these may not convert the voltage, so both devices are necessary. Here is a link to a converter and adapter that would work. Adapter vs Converter – The big difference between an adapter and a converter is electricity. While the purpose of an adapter is to simply help the plugs on your electronics fit into (or more aptly, adapt to the shape of) foreign outlets, a converter’s job is to change the voltage found in an outlet to match that of your devices. When to use a converter – Thankfully, the kinds of appliances that typically need a converter are single-voltage items, which more often than not, tend to be older-model irons and hair dryers. The majority of modern-made electronics are dual- or multi-voltage, meaning that they are able to withstand more than one type of electricity and therefore, only require an adapter. If you’re unsure whether or not you’ll need one, take a look at the chart below or check out the labels on your appliances and chargers for their specific requirements. Italian Outlets – Prior to using personal electrical appliances in Italian hotels, please check the suitability with Reception. Italy uses a round, 2-prong plug which looks like (or in some cases a 3 prong) :

Hair dryers, flat irons, and curling irons – American appliances will blow out Italian outlets so please be cautious when bringing your own. Make sure you have the right adapters. Purchasing reasonably priced Italian outlet approved hair dryers, flat irons, and curling irons for this trip might be a worthwhile purchase. These can be purchased on Amazon for <40USD per item. o Here is a hair dryer that might work for you. o Here is a flat iron that might work for you. o Here is a curling iron that might work for you.

CELL PHONE AND SERVICE WHILE ABOARD

Take pictures of everything on your cell phone that you may need later – Having a photo record of everything is easier when you need quick access, so take pictures of important items you might even remotely need on your trip. These would include: o Passports and other ID o Prescription medicine bottles o Immunization records o Tour or Hotel Vouchers Ensure you know your phone plan – Surprise fees aren’t fun, so call your telephone provider to see what the cost of the plan would be when you are traveling. Roaming charges, extra data and text charges add up. In general, we recommend that you contact your carrier and purchase one of their daily unlimited plans. Most are about $10 a day. This can be incredibly helpful when finding directions or looking up the history of a painting or architectural gem. The most important part is that you have a working cell phone that we can use to reach you in case of emergency. Make sure that people who need to reach you know – Remind friends and family who need to reach you about the difference in time zone. The time zone difference from Los Angeles and Rome is 9 hours. Store important trip specific phone numbers in your phone – Having phone numbers ready in your phone before you need them, can come in very handy. Important phone numbers include: o Hotels & airlines o Transportation companies o Your travel agent o Emergency contacts and services at home such as a veterinarian, emergency plumber, a neighbor who has a key to your house Make sure everything is charged – Check your phone and don’t forget to charge your back up battery as well before you leave. PLEASE BRING A BACKUP BATTERY FOR YOUR PHONE – Here is a link to one we like Download any apps that you may want to use on your travels – Here are a few that I like: o XE – Currency Conversion app to help you with conversation rates. o DuoLingo – Language learning app to help you learn basics of a language while you travel. o Bank Apps – These apps give you quick access to your credit card or bank information.

AIRLINE VERIFICATION AND ONLINE CHECK-IN

We highly recommend that you verify your flights approximately 72 hours prior to departure to double check times and your seats. Please note that you can check and change seats any time you like. To do that you will just need to access your airline website and use the record locator on your e-ticket. If we booked your flights, you can also email us to verify this information. Seat assignments – There are many reasons why the seat assignments on an aircraft can change, even if you paid for seats or are booked in Premium Economy or Business Class. Some reasons could include an aircraft type change, they need to accommodate someone with special needs or a family, or I have even seen system errors that can change seats. The airlines have full and final control of seat assignments and the seats on your boarding pass will be the final say. We HIGHLY recommend that you attempt to complete your online check in for your flight at the 24-hour mark. You can do this on the airline website using the record locator that we sent to you with your e-tickets. It is possible that you MAY NOT be able to finish the process for several reasons as they may need to see your passport, or there is another type of security issue. Please do not stress if you cannot complete it online. If you think there is an issue, please send us any email or call (909) 266-0117. Please Note: o For the most part checking in online is the same for an international vs domestic flight, but you will need to put your passport info in, so please have it handy. o European air carriers such as Swiss sometimes squish names together in the first name of the check in box – Do not be alarmed it is normal and you will be fine when checking in. o By name squish we mean – FIRST MIDDLE LAST becomes FIRSTMIDDLE LAST. So if your first and last name don’t work, please try your first and middle name in the first name box. Airport arrival time – You need to check in and need to arrive 3 hours before departure at the airport for any international flight. It is better to be safe than sorry with airline boarding times so I always get there far in advance. Global Entry – Signing up for Global Entry will make returning from Italy much smoother. It is not required and if you don’t travel more than 3 times a year it may not be worth your while. Danny LOVES his!!! The best way to get started with Global Entry is to sign up here: https://www.cbp.gov/travel/trusted-traveler-programs/global- entry/how-apply o Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre- approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Members enter the United States through automatic kiosks at select airports.

At airports, program members proceed to Global Entry kiosks, present their machine-readable passport or U.S. permanent resident card, place their fingerprints on the scanner for fingerprint verification and complete a customs declaration. The kiosk issues the traveler a transaction receipt and directs the traveler to baggage claim and the exit.

Travelers must be pre-approved for the Global Entry program. All applicants undergo a rigorous background check and in-person interview before enrollment.

While Global Entry’s goal is to speed travelers through the process, members may still be selected for further examination when entering the United States. Any violation of the program’s terms and conditions will result in the appropriate enforcement action and termination of the traveler’s membership privileges.

Home to Airport Transfers – Please take time to arrange your Home to Airport transfer. If you need help and have not requested it already please let us know. o If you are arranging your own transfer take into consideration traffic and finding airport parking when arranging Home to Airport Transfers. Airport to Hotel Transfers– If you are arranging your own transfers from the airport to the hotel and wish to go by taxi please go to the official taxi stand or let the hotel call one for you.

FIRST DAY INFORMATION TRAVEL INFORMATION

First Day Information – Meeting instructions will be posted in the hotel lobby mid-day on the Jun 17th. o Jun 17 – Romanico Palace o Address: Via Boncompagni, 35, 00187 Roma RM, Italy Bus Information – The busses will be equipped with wifi and have an emergency toilet. o If you have motion sickness or accessibility needs, please contact us as soon as possible to reserve a seat at the front of the bus for you. o Your 1 checked main piece of luggage will go under the bus o Any carryon items will remain with you while riding on the bus. Please pack light for this will be with you on your seat on the bus. There is very little storage for day packs or smaller items. Be wary of pickpockets – In Italy, like in most Latin countries, pickpocketing is an issue. We always recommend that you do not carry large amounts of cash, and that you either use a money purse or belt, or have some other way to secure your money. It is important to be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded public spaces. Please note that this can and does occur inside museums such as the Vatican.
