The band acquired future Caravan bassist Mike Wedgwood. This was their last album to feature a fairly steady lineup (the band had trouble keeping bassists, even at this early part of their career). Darryl Way and Francis Monkman were to jump ship, Way to form Wolf, and Monkman, well I'm not sure, other than helping form Sky in the late '70s. Curved Air was never the most complex of prog rock bands out there and many times people even wonder if you really think of them as prog in a traditional sense. Well definitely not in a Yes or Genesis manner. With Phantasmagoria they take on more complex material than ever before, with a strong symphonic bent in many of the pieces, most particularly "Melinda (More or Less)". "Not Quite the Same" features lyrics on masturbation, while showcasing Sonja Kristina's wonderful voice. "Cheetah" is another one of Darryl Way's violin pieces that lead up to an electronic rendition of "Vivaldi" (from Air Conditioning) now titled "Ultra Vivaldi". It's the same, but with VCS-3 synth instead of violin. The band experiments with electronically modified vocals, apparently an experiment that inspired EMS to develop a vocoder, using Lewis Carroll's "Alice Through the Looking Glass" for this experiment. "Once a Ghost Always a Ghost" is a strange piece with lots of horns. Many state this was either mariachi or calypso influenced, but is nowhere as cheesy as that could imply. It's really a great album and highly recommended.
