Local tributes to the “Lion of Africa”: One woman shares her memories of Mandela By Brock Weir

It had been a day she dreaded and prepared for over much of this year, but when the moment finally came on Thursday evening, the news of Nelson Mandela’s death was no less shocking to Aurora’s Mae Khamissa. While getting some last minute groceries that evening, Ms. Khamissa got the call from her daughter. Describing her reaction as one of “shock” and “disbelief”, she admits she made “a bit of an ass” of herself as people approached her to make sure she was okay. She describes the scene with a bit of a chuckle in hindsight, but the news conjured up many memories of growing up in South Africa at the height of Apartheid. “This man was our hope,” she says. “He was the father of our nation and he gave us so much encouragement and hope.” Ms. Khamissa and her husband, Raz, are the owners of Aurora’s Omar’s Shoes. In the days after Mr. Mandela’s death, they set up a makeshift tribute to the iconic leader in their storefront, featuring photographs, flags and memorabilia from his visits to Canada. But behind the photos and t-shirts is a very human story, one shared by South African expatriates the world-over. Ms. Khamissa, whose family settled in South Africa from India, was one of 10 children. Her family lived near South Africa’s border with Botswana until the late 1950s when they were evicted by the authorities. Many years later, she recalls the trauma of the segregation that was imposed on them. “We had a beautiful home my father had built, we had great relationships with the local Africans there. My family had to gather what they could but we lost everything Mae Khamissa knows first-hand the problems of growing up as a non-white in we had.” They were settled on the outskirts of Johannesburg in a small township specifically South Africa at the height of Apartheid. As a young girl, she heard stories of Man- reserved for people of South Asian descent. Letters to the editor Machell’s Corners Abuse of handicapped parking spaces is “rampant” I am writing today to discuss an important topic regarding handicapped parking at the Aurora GO station. We are all in a rush to get home everyday and, as such, people waiting to pick someone up will park in the most convenient area to get out faster. The other day, my parents came to pick me up early and, much to their surprise, all of the handicapped parking spaces were taken by people waiting to pick other riders up. The kicker is that none of them had handicapped placards and my mother does, having had a rare lung disease. As such, my parents were forced to park sideways, blocking in the illegally parked vehicles. Obviously this made some people angry and they started to honk. This is where my father got up and out of our car with the handicapped placard pointing out to the illegally parked motorists where they were parked and why my mother had the right to park there, but could not, due to them. Handicapped parking abuse is rampant. Studies show that more than 1-in-4 vehicles parked in handicapped parking spots do so illegally. No matter what priority cities give handicapped parking enforcement, parking enforcement agents cannot be everywhere at all times. Handicapped parking was designed for people who have trouble moving around. Some are in wheelchairs; some use canes; some just have trouble walking great distances. Some have incurable diseases; some have heart or lung issues. Handicapped parking is a basic common sense thing. It is yes or no; black or white. Either you need the space or you do not. Either you have a handicapped placard or you do not. If you are not supposed to park in a handicapped To submit a letter to the editor, please send your email to [email protected]. space and do so, you can get ticketed and maybe even Deadline for submissions is Sunday at 1 p.m. have your car towed. COUNTRY TOY TEA Over 1,000 local kids will reap the rewards of last week’s Country Toy Tea, organized by families of Country Day School. Bringing together volunteers and organizers from King, Aurora, Newmarket, and beyond, this year’s installment of the annual tradition, hosted by Kelly MacDonald, collected Christmas and Hanukkah gifts for Leeder Place Family Shelter, Pathways of York Region, Sandgate Women’s Shelter, the Women’s Centre of York Region, and the York Centre for Youth & Family. Sponsored in part by the King Weekly Sentinel, the event featured not only tea, but a special holiday concert by students from Pickering College and a fashion show from injoy boutique, Want Boutique, and Aqua Beauty Emporium. (Left) Toys and gifts were collected by student elves Alexandra Nichols, Jane Stanton, Maddy MacDonald, Kendall Langston, Brittney Nichols, Paige Ofield, Emily Burrows, Holly Nichols, and Emily Killops.
