Taking the Canisius College hockey team to new heights during his career, Dave Smith is in his 10th season as head The Dave Smith File coach of the Golden Griffin program. Coaching Career Smith has enjoyed a number of memorable moments during 1998-2000 Miami University Assistant Coach his coaching tenure and has continued to raise the bar while leading the Canisius program. Most recently, Smith led the 2000-2002 Bowling Green Assistant Coach Griffs to two-straight Atlantic Hockey Championship games, 2002-2005 Mercyhurst Associate Coach including the team’s first title in 2013. The program has also received national attention with its 2005-present Canisius College Head Coach graduates having unprecedented success at the professional level. Playing Career During the 2012-13 campaign, Smith guided Canisius to the program’s first conference title with a 1988-1992 The Ohio State University 7-2 victory in the Atlantic Hockey Championship against Mercyhurst and the team’s first appearance in the NCAA Division I Tournament. The Griffs also finished the campaign ranked 19th in the final 1992-1993 Dayton Bombers (ECHL)/ USCHO.com national poll, marking the program’s highest finish in the national rankings. Canisius Fort Wayne Komets (IHL) nearly duplicated the remarkable feat the following season, advancing to the 2014 Atlantic Hockey 1993-1994 Fort Wayne Komets (IHL) title game after again eliminating the top two seeds in the conference tournament. 1994-1995 Binghamton Rangers (AHL) 1995-1996 Detroit Vipers (IHL)/ Away from campus, 2011 graduate Cory Conacher continued to make news at the highest level. Los Angeles Ice Dogs (IHL) Named one of the top 30 players at the Division I level in the last 10 seasons, Conacher became the first Griff to play in the and has totaled 55 points, 18 goals and 37 assists 1996-1997 Long Beach Ice Dogs (IHL)/ in two seasons at the highest level. Conacher also became just the fourth player in AHL history to Orlando Solar Bears (IHL) garner Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year accolades in the same season, helping lead the 1997-1998 Orlando Solar Bears (IHL) Norfolk Admirals to the 2012 just one year after graduating from Canisius and excelling San Antonio Dragons (IHL) under Smith’s leadership.

The achievements under Smith are not limited to just the past two years. In his first nine seasons leading the Golden Griffin program, he has guided numerous student-athletes to success both Smith Year-by-Year on and off the ice.
