Both series were founded by Dr. Bryant Walker, Mr. Bradshaw H. Swales, and Dr. W. W. Newcomb. The Occasional Papers, publication of which was begun in 1913, serve as a medium for original studies based principally upon the collections in the Museum. They are issued separately. When a sufficient number of pages has been printed to make a volume, a title page, table of contents, and an index are supplied to libraries and individuals on the mailing list for the series. The Miscellaneous Publications, which include papers on field and museum tech- niques, monographic studies, and other contributions not within the scope of the Occasional Papers, are published separately. It is not intended that they be grouped into volumes. Each number has a title page and, when necessary, a table of contents. STUDIES ON THE FLASH COMMUNICATION SYSTEM IN PHOTINUS FIREFLIES" THE FIRST indication of human awareness of the function of light pro- duction in fireflies is found in a legend from India of cobras attracting fire flies to glowing stones (Harvey, 1957). The function of flashing as a mating adaptation was established early in the twentieth century largely through the studies of McDermott (1911-1917). During this period the flashes of males of several species and the response flashes of females of a few species were described, and the role of species-specific flash signals in reproductive isolation was demonstrated. In 1951, Barber, through observations of male flash-patterns, recognized several cryptic species in the genus Photurls. Although numerous recent studies have dealt with the physiology and biochemistry of firefly luminescence, only five have been concerned with the communicative function (Schwalb, 1961; Kaufmann, 1965; Lloyd, 19640, 1965n, 1965b). There have been no studies or theoretical discussions cotlsidering the general biological and physical factors governing the func- tioning and evolution of communication in fireflies. In spite of a volun~ino~~sliterature on American fireflies, the signals of most described species are unknown. The presumed functioning in reproductive isolation of the various parameters of the flash signal sys- tem, such as color and flash rate, is mentioned frequently in textbooks, not because the significance of these parameters has been demonstrated, but because variations among some species have been observed. The purpose of this study is to establish a founclation of general knowl- edge on firefly mating behavior; such general information should pinpoint species best suited for studies on the role of flash signals in reproductive isolation. The larva of P. attenuatus can be distinguished from that of P. fragilis, the only other species of which the larva has been described, by the presence of a pair of tubercles on the ligula and by the arrangement of the spines and hooks on the abdominal segments. A larva de P. attenuatus pode ser diferenciada da larva de P. fragilis, a única espécie que já possuía a larva descrita, pela presença do par de tubérculos na lígula e pela disposição dos espinhos e ganchos nos segmentos abdominais. In the past two years, over 20 new species have been found by the present authors after studying over 250 odonatans from 300,000 amber inclusions. Most of them have now been published, and here we provide a brief review. Three suborders of crown Odonata have been recorded, including the damselfly families or superfami- lies Platycnemididae, Platystictidae, Perilestidae, Hemiphlebiidae, Coenagrionoidea, Pseudostigmatoidea, Mesomegaloprepidae and Dysagrionidae, plus the dragonfly families Lindeniidae, Gomphaeschnidae and Burmaeshnidae, and the damsel-dragonfly family Burmaphlebiidae. Keywords: Anisoptera; Anisozygoptera; Zygoptera; Cretaceous; Burmese amber; dragonfly Introduction Dragonflies have an excellent fossil record on account of their large size and association with water-laid geological sedimentary deposits. Moreover, the ready preservation of the com- plex wing venation provides systematically useful features including the appearance of the pterostigma, nodus and arculus. Dragonflies sensu lato – in the broad, palaeontological sense or odonatopterans – date back to the earliest-known, late Palaeozoic radiation of the ptery- gotes (winged insects) in the mid-Carboniferous, circa 320 million years ago. The Carboniferous geropterans resemble some other contemporary insects (palaeodictyopteroids) that did not habitually fold their wings.

The doctor, professor, children’s book writer, conservationist, comedian, neuroanatomist, and eventually odonatologist Professor Angelo has published more than 110 papers, of which 79 are on dragonflies. He erected 97 new names, an impressive number for a small and relatively well-known order of insects. Here are presented annotated checklists of his publications on dragonflies (from 1953 to Sep- tember of 2015), and nomina, as well as few comments of his impact on Neotropical odonatology as a whole.
