Team Florida was represented by the following players: Hudson Swafford, Tallahassee 136 Tyson Alexander, Gainesville 136 Judson Eustaquio, Lake Worth 136 Sam Saunders, Orlando 137

The Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association accepted responsibility for conducting the International Four-Ball Championship in 2003 and began doing so in 2004, under the title Southern International Four-Ball Championship. This idea was first presented to the Board by John McKey, Jr., past President of the SGA and long-time Board member, who had sin- gularly conducted this venerable championship for 25 years. It was Mr. McKey's desire to turn the reins over to the Southern to ensure the future of this 70 year old, nationally prominent championship. The list of previous winners reads like a who's-who of championship golf and the SGA is currently working on a complete list of those champions. The Championship is comprised of two divisions, Mid-Amateur and Senior, and is 72 holes of Four-Ball Stroke Play. The 2004 Champions were the Mid-Amateur team of Jeff Knox, Augusta, Georgia and Steve Johnson, Signal Mountain, Tennessee and the Senior team of William Boles of Wilson, North Carolina and Marty West, Bethesda, Maryland.

Bulldog Pair Unseat Kuehne-Green in Southern International Four-Ball

Larry Guest, Orlando, Fla

PALM CITY, FL. — A pair of former Mississippi State golf teammates passed defending champs Trip Kuehne and Danny Green in the closing holes Sunday to win the 74th Southern International Four-Ball at The Fox Club. Down by two at the start of the day, Tyler Crawford and Clay Homan pulled even with the defending champs with three holes to play, then took the lead on Crawford's birdie on the 17th and closed out a two-shot win with a par from Homan, the only player in the foursome to dodge the lake on the dogleg finishing hole. Homan, now the golf coach at State, played his second shot safe right of the green after his partner and both Kuehne and Greene found the water. He wedged to the fringe some 20 feet from the hole and got down in two for the clinching par 5 and his team's winning total of 22-under-par 196 in the featured Mid-Am division. "They played great and deserved to win," said Kuehne, of Irving, Tex, who won the U.S. Mid-Am title in October. "When you putt like I did down the stretch, you don't deserve to win." He missed birdie putts inside 10 feet on two of the four closing holes. In the Senior division, tour pro agent Bob Morris and partner Mike Kelly came from three off the pace with a final 64 to win by a shot over John Benson and Don Erickson. Former U.S. Amateur champ Vinny Giles and partner Jim Holtgrieve failed to fire in the final round and finished four back.

NATIONAL AMATEUR OF THE MONTH AWARD

October 2008 Winner Trip Kuehne

The Southern Golf Association's National Amateur of the Month continues to rise in prestige since the organization first launched the award in March, 2003. The monthly winner, selected by a blue-ribbon national panel of golf officials, coaches and journalists, is recognized in a national press release and receives a handsome, engraved plaque and letter of congratulations. The award is doled out March through October each year. The Am of the Month award has enjoyed increasing coverage both in traditional media outlets and on collegiate athletics web- sites. It is not unusual now for college sports information staffers to stump for their golfers following a strong individual perform- ance. On several occasions, the award has been presented on live local news sports segments or in a ceremony at halftime of the winner's college basketball or football games. The 2009 selection panel includes Jim Herre, editor of Sports Illustrated Golf Plus; Joe Juliano, Philadelphia Inquirer; Gregg Grost, College Golf Coaches Assn,; Bruce Heppler, Ga. Tech golf coach; Wyn Norwood, SGA director; Buford McCarty, SGA Executive Secretary; Clarke Rheney, SGA director; Ron Balicki, Golfweek senior writer; Clay Homan, Mississippi State golf coach; Bob Hang, ESPN.com golf writer; Jay Jennison, Amateurgolf.com; Richard Durrett, Dallas Morning News; Sam Woolwine, Chattanooga Classic, Nationwide Tour and panel moderator Larry Guest, SGA Media Liaison.

HALL OF FAME

The Southern Golf Association Hall of Fame was established in 1972 by the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association. The following qualifications were established as criteria for nomination of an inductee, but an inductee does not have to meet every single criteria. The candidate must have: 1) Outstanding competitive career; 2) Outstanding administra- tive contributions; 3) Outstanding promotional contributions; 4) The candidate must have met the above criteria while a mem- ber of a Southern Golf Association Member Club.

The first Hall of Fame inductee was, appropriately, Robert Tyre Jones, Jr. The award was made posthumously in July, 1972 at the 1972 Southern Amateur Championship held at the Green Island Country Club in Columbus, Georgia.

In this, its 33rd year, there have been 20 inductees with 13 years of no inductions This, in effect, makes it even more of an honor to be a member of the Southern Golf Association Hall of Fame.

SIMON BOLIVAR CUP

The Simon Bolivar Cup was inaugurated by the Venezuelan Golf Federation to provide an outstanding contest of golf and to establish bonds between Venezuela and other countries through golf. It is staged in honor of Simon Bolivar, the great lib- erator of Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. At first the cup was intended to include only the Bolivian coun- tries and "Mother" Spain. As the years passed, however, the importance and scope of this biennial Cup competition grew beyond Bolivian borders to include most all of the great golf playing countries around the world.

The Southern Golf Association, sponsor of the U.S. team, accepted its initial invitation in 1983 and has seen the American flag raised last in the opening ceremony and lowered last in closing, a privilege issued to the defending champion and cur- rent champion respectively, seven out of the nine times it has played in the tournament. Again, the entire U.S. contingent was in awe of the hospitality of the Venezuelan Golf Federation and the high standards throughout the event. We of the Southern Golf Association salute all of the Venezuelan people and federation members involved in the operation of this great international golf tournament.

Teams previously representing United States:

1983 Pat Stevens, Richmond, KY & Jay Townsend, Tequesta, FL 1985 Doug Farr, Monroe, LA & Jay Sigel, Berwyn, PA 1987 Robert McNamara, Frankfort,KY & David Toms, Bossier City, LA 1989 Matt Peterson, Morganton, NC & Jason Widener, Greensboro, NC 1991 Dour Farr, Monroe, LA & Austin Jones, Orlando, FL (Not Champions) 1993 Allen Doyle, LaGrange, GA & Tom McKnight, Galax, VA 1995 Tim Jackson, Memphis, TN & Paul Simson, Raleigh, NC 1997 Paul Simson, Raleigh, NC & Ed Brooks, Georgetown, TX (Not Champions) 1999 David Eger, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL & Danny Green, Jackson, TN 2001 (Did not participate)** 2003 (Cancelled by Venezuelan Golf Federation)

Due to the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and the subsequent focus by terrorists groups on American citizens, the Board of Directors of the SGA elected not to participate in the 2001 Simon Bolivar Cup matches and put our team and cap- tain at risk. We will resume participation in 2005.
