BOB JONES STATE TEAM

A traditional part of the Southern Amateur, and of great importance to the players, is the Team Championship, in which the four best 36 hole scores from each state represent that state as a team. The team with the lowest cumulative score earns the Bob Jones Team Trophy for each player. In the 2009 championship, Georgia was the State Team Champion with a team total of 547. Team Georgia was represent- ed by the following players: Mark Silvers, Savannah 134 Taylor Hall, LaGrange 137 Michael Green, Augusta 137 Jay Moseley, Bainbridge 139

SOUTHERN INTERNATIONAL FOUR-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association accepted responsibility for conducting the International Four-Ball Championship in 2003 and began doing so in 2004, under the title Southern International Four-Ball Championship. This idea was first presented to the Board by John McKey, Jr., past President of the SGA and long-time Board member, who had sin- gularly conducted this venerable championship for 25 years. It was Mr. McKey's desire to turn the reins over to the Southern to ensure the future of this 70 year old, nationally prominent championship. The list of previous winners reads like a who's-who of championship golf and the SGA is currently working on a complete list of those champions. The Championship is comprised of two divisions, Mid-Amateur and Senior, and is 72 holes of Four-Ball Stroke Play. The 2004 Champions were the Mid-Amateur team of Jeff Knox, Augusta, Georgia and Steve Johnson, Signal Mountain, Tennessee and the Senior team of William Boles of Wilson, North Carolina and Marty West, Bethesda, Maryland.

De!cher-Forrester Win Southern International Four-Ball

Larry Guest, Orlando, Fla

JUPITER, FL — Duke Delcher canned a 6-foot birdie putt on the final hole to give him and partner Carlton Forrester a dramatic, one-stroke victory Monday in the 75th Southern International Four-Ball on the Old Trail Fazio Course at Jonathan's Landing. Delcher's birdie gave his team a 54-hole final better-ball total of 26-under-par 190 and avoided a playoff against second-round leaders Paul Couture and Mike Weeks in the featured Mid-Am division. The two teams, in the final pairing, failed to fire on the front nine, then reeled off a pack of birdies to pull away from the field, both teams shooting 7-under-par 29 on the closing nine. After Forrester, an Atlanta investment banker, birdied the difficult ninth hole for a 2-shot swing and the lead, Delcher, a Bluffton SC busi- nessman, sank birdie putts of 10 to 20 feet on four of the next five holes to open a 3-stroke lead. But Couture and Weeks countered with an eagle and four birdies over the closing five holes to catch up and set the stage for Delcher's winning putt. Delcher is a past winner of this event and has regularly contended for the title with various partners before teaming with Forrester for this year's victory. In the Senior division, Randy Nichols of Brookville, IN sank an 8-foot birdie on the third playoff hole to give him and partner Skip Runnels of Richmond, IN the crown over Larry Clark and Norm Swenson. The venerable tournament is played under the auspices of the Southern Golf Association.

NATIONAL AMATEUR OF THE MONTH AWARD

2009 Winner Ben An being presented award by Mayor Poston of Bradenton, Florida

The Southern Golf Association's National Amateur of the Month award continues to rise in prestige since the organization first lauched the award in March, 2003. The monthly winner, selected by a blue-ribbon national panel of golf officials, college golf coaches and golf journalists, is recognized in a national press release that goes out to golf publications, TV networks and newspa- pers throughout the country. The winner receives a handsome, engraved acrylic plaque and letter of congratulations from the SGA. The award is made March through October each year. Often, the award is presented at halftime of college football and basketball games, in live local TV sportscasts and, for the first time this past year, was presented by the mayor of the winner's home town. Mayor Wayne Poston of Bradenton, FL, presented the SGA plaque along with the key to the city in special ceremonies to Bye-ong "Ben" An, the youngest U.S. Amateur champion in history. The award has enjoyed increasing coverage both in traditional media outlets and on collegiate athletics websites. It has become common for college publicists to stump for their golfers following a strong individual performance. The 2009 selection panel includes Jim Herre, editor of Sports Illustrated Golf Plus; Joe Juliano, Philadelphia Inquirer; Gregg Grost, Executive Director College Golf Coaches Assn.; Bruce Heppler, Ga. Tech golf coach; Wyn Norwood, SGA director; Buford McCarty, SGA Executive Secretary; Clarke Rheney, SGA Director; Ron Balicki, Golfweek senior writer; Clay Homan, Mississippi State golf coach; Bob Hang, ESPN.com golf writer; Richard Durrett, Dallas Morning News; Pete Wlodkowski, Amateurgolf.com, Sam Woolwine, Chattanooga Classic, and panel moderator Larry Guest, SGA Media Liaison.

HALL OF FAME

The Southern Golf Association Hall of Fame was established in 1972 by the Board of Directors of the Southern Golf Association. The follow- ing qualifications were established as criteria for nomination of an inductee, but an inductee does not have to meet every single criteria. The candidate must have: 1) Outstanding competitive career; 2) Outstanding administrative contributions; 3) Outstanding promotional contribu- tions; 4) The candidate must have met the above criteria while a member of a Southern Golf Association Member Club.

The first Hall of Fame inductee was, appropriately, Robert Tyre Jones, Jr. The award was made posthumously in July, 1972 at the 1972 Southern Amateur Championship held at the Green Island Country Club in Columbus, Georgia.

The Honor Roll of the SGA Hall of Fame is as follows: 1972 Robert T. Jones, Jr. 1984 Marvin Giles, III 1996 A. Downing Gray 1973 Richard S.Tufts 1985 No Election 1997 No Election 1974 Nelson Whitney 1986 Charles R. Yates 1998 Joe H. King 1975 Billy Joe Patton 1987 No Election 1999 Tim Jackson 1976 Curtis S. Person, Sr. 1988 Thomas W. barnes 2000 James W. (Billy) Key 1977 No Election 1989 No Election 2001 No Election 1978 Sam Perry 1990 Watts Gunn 2002 Fred S. Ridley 1979 Dale Morey 1991 Arnold Blum 2003 William C. Campbell 1980 No Election 1992 No Election 2004 No Election 1981 Lewis W. Oehnnig 1993 Danny Yates 2005 John C. Owens 1982 No Election 1994 No Election 2006 Hubert Green 1983 No Election 1995 No Election The Southern Golf Association Hall of Fame is unique in that it does not necessarily induct a member each year, nor does it select multiple inductees. In this, its 33rd year, there have been 20 inductees with 13 years of no inductions This, in effect, makes it even more of an honor to be a member of the Southern Golf Association Hall of Fame.

SIMON BOLIVAR CUP

The Simon Bolivar Cup was inaugurated by the Venezuelan Golf Federation to provide an outstanding contest of golf and to establish bonds between Venezuela and other countries through golf. It is staged in honor of Simon Bolivar, the great liberator of Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. At first the cup was intended to include only the Bolivian countries and "Mother" Spain. As the years passed, how- ever, the importance and scope of this biennial Cup competition grew beyond Bolivian borders to include most all of the great golf playing countries around the world.

The Southern Golf Association, sponsor of the U.S. team, accepted its initial invitation in 1983 and has seen the American flag raised last in the opening ceremony and lowered last in closing, a privilege issued to the defending champion and current champion respectively, seven out of the nine times it has played in the tournament. Again, the entire U.S. contingent was in awe of the hospitality of the Venezuelan Golf Federation and the high standards throughout the event. We of the Southern Golf Association salute all of the Venezuelan people and feder- ation members involved in the operation of this great international golf tournament.

Teams previously representing United States:

1983 Pat Stevens, Richmond, KY & Jay Townsend, Tequesta, FL 1985 Doug Farr, Monroe, LA & Jay Sigel, Berwyn, PA 1987 Robert McNamara, Frankfort,KY & David Toms, Bossier City, LA 1989 Matt Peterson, Morganton, NC & Jason Widener, Greensboro, NC 1991 Dour Farr, Monroe, LA & Austin Jones, Orlando, FL (Not Champions) 1993 Allen Doyle, LaGrange, GA & Tom McKnight, Galax, VA 1995 Tim Jackson, Memphis, TN & Paul Simson, Raleigh, NC 1997 Paul Simson, Raleigh, NC & Ed Brooks, Georgetown, TX (Not Champions) 1999 David Eger, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL & Danny Green, Jackson, TN 2001 (Did not participate)** 2003 (Cancelled by Venezuelan Golf Federation)

Due to the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and the subsequent focus by terrorists groups on American citizens, the Board of Directors of the SGA elected not to participate in the 2001 Simon Bolivar Cup matches and put our team and captain at risk. We will resume partici- pation in 2005.
