    Southern Golf ASSociAtion ….. neWS January, 2012 SGA StArtS 111 th YeAr ; Southern Am At LittLe rock ’S chenAL countrY cLub BIRMINGHAM, AL -- The storied Southern Golf Association enters its 111th year, with its premier event, the 106th Southern Amateur Championship, slated for play July 18-21 at chenal country club in Little Rock, AR. As has become the norm, the field will include many amateurs ranked among the top players in the U.S. and the world. The Southern Am, once the purview of well-heeled Southerners, has evolved into a national and international competition consistently judged among the top eight amateur events in the world. Ten years ago, the Southern Am field, previously restricted to entrants from SGA-member Southern Club and collegiate players within the traditional 14 southern states, was opened to worldwide entries. The 2011 Southern Am at Innisbrook Resort in Florida reflected that broad participation with players from 33 states and 9 foreign countries. As many as 700 entries are now received each year for the Southern Am , the field pared down to 168 through exemptions for the most accomplished players and a series of 20 local qualifiers scattered throughout the South and a few other states. A “national” qualifier is held at the tournament site on the Monday of tournament week to give appli - cants an extra shot at a berth in the field. While other amateur events sought to attract players with lavish gifts and perks from corporate sponsors, the SGA directors voted to continue its practice of simply putting on a first-class tournament in the true spirit of amateurism – stroke play with roving rules officials.

We appreciate your continued interest in our sport, and we clearly recognize the extent to which our success is tied to the thorough and professional coverage we receive from a Owide variety of global media outlets. As the PGA TOUR begins another great season, we can truly state that the image and competitive spirit of our players has led to the healthiest state in the history of our organization. The Sports Business Journal recently reaffirmed this when it published the “2003 League Report Card,” a survey of corporate sponsors’ opinions of their investment in sports properties. The PGA TOUR ranked first in overall satisfaction among the 16 major sports. This is important as we continue to raise the exposure of our tournaments, provide significant value to our sponsors and showcase the widespread excellence of our athletes. The competition level on the PGA TOUR in 2003 was at an all-time high, with season-ending honors going down to the wire. Tiger Woods recorded a season-high five victories and the lowest stroke average on TOUR and garnered a fifth consecutive Player of the Year honor. Vijay Singh won four times and captured his first money title. Davis Love III won a career-high four times, includ- ing THE PLAYERS Championship, making 2003 the first time in 30 years where three players won four or more times in a season. However, the depth of the TOUR was never more evident. Eleven players age 40 or older combined to capture 15 PGA TOUR titles.

    I Alabama Golf Association i THE FIRST 100 YEARS by Ian Thompson f/ Commissioned by the Alabama Golf Association The Alabama Golf Association has had a storied past, which comes alive in Alabama Golf Association: The First 100 Years. From the early days of the association through almost one hundred State Amateurs, the reader is transported to yesteryear as championships are chronicled, characters introduced, and tales told from firsthand reports and many gleaned from newspaper stories of the day. State Amateur champions with such memorable names as Files Crenshaw through Smylie Kaufman, and all the champions before, after, and in-between, are learned of here. The two Sam’s, Perry and Farlow, stand tallest with four State Amateur wins each, with Glenn Crisman, Scudday Horner, M. C. Fitts, and Jackie Cummings each claiming three titles. And, in more recent times, who could forget Bobby Wyatt’s magical 57 in the second round of the 2010 State Junior at the Country Club of Mobile? Without a doubt, one of the very best rounds . in the history of the game. The AGA began in 1915, with the Women’s Alabama Golf Association coming along fourteen years later. Eighty-two Women’s State Amateurs have been contested with Kathy Hartwiger’s ten wins seemingly unassailable, and, who knows, she might just add to her tally. Others dominated their eras including Bee McWane’s six titles; Chris Spivey and Virginia Derby Grimes each with five; and June Mayson, Beth Barry, and Jane Reynolds all with four. These two associations became one in 2010 and that merger has seen both go from strength to strength as one body conducting twelve championships, many USGA qualifiers, and a number of other tournaments.
