I figured it would only be a few credit hours difference and a little more time investment. I am still smiling at my naivety, but well contented in this God-ordained venture. During my first semester, when asked why I was seeking a PhD in nursing, I spoke my passion, “So that I can be a part of redefining the nursing paradigm in the developing world.” My goal remains unchanged. The education and experiences of the past six years in the PhD nursing program strengthened and intensified my vision of a lifelong career within the global health arena. Foremost, I thank my God for guiding my steps to the University of Texas at Arlington, where I encountered a long-cherished desire, a community of scholars and select mentors who explored varied paths of knowledge with me. From my first semester on, I marveled at the infinity of choice and the rippling effects of each decision made. Attending UT Arlington started me on this beguiling journey of research into factors affecting the relocation and transition of internationally educated nurses. As the Zulus say, Umuntu Ngamantu Ngubantu. I am who I am because of my family and the friends in my life. I thank the following key people: My husband, Femi Ibitayo, who has always dreamed with me, thinks with me, fueling my heart with courage to do that for which I was born; my two sons, Tobeya and Yosef, who are my heroes marching boldly through life, unabashedly using the intellect and multiple talents bestowed them; my father and mother, Stan and Margot McMillen, for giving me my world view by raising their children in Papua New Guinea, Mexico, and Guatemala; and Rev. Panya Baba for facilitating our participation in Rescue Fellowship Nigeria, meeting the needs of the underserved Nigerian population. The University of Texas at Arlington, 2010 Supervising Professor: Jennifer Gray A paucity of research studies and systematic reviews have been conducted on IEN nurse migration experiences in the US. The number of IENs in the US RN workforce is projected to continue growing. Therefore, studies on nurse migration and IEN relocation and transition experiences are essential. This exploratory descriptive study on the transition conditions and professional satisfaction of nurses migrating to the US provides information on the complex pull and push factors affecting nurse migration. This study described the push factors, pull factors, personal characteristics, motivation to migrate, transition conditions, family/social environment, work environment, and professional satisfaction of IENs in the US health care system. It also described the differences in these IENs across source countries by world region. This study‟s conceptual framework guided the data analysis and exploration of concepts. Results for this study indicated the majority of IENs who received their basic nursing education across all WHO regions experienced high professional satisfaction on all items in the Professional Satisfaction subscale. Although unexpected, this finding may reflect the maturity of v the IENs, as they were not new nurses but filled out the instrument retrospectively. Their memory of their relocation and transition experiences may have lost its immediacy. This research study added to the knowledge base on nurse migration issues by providing a greater understanding of foreign nurses‟ relocation and transition experiences in the US, and the successful integration of foreign nurses from around the world into the healthcare workforce. Several IEN participants indicated in their open-ended comments that they desired transition programs both in their source countries and their destination countries. Individualized IEN transition programs could be developed with modular components and content on clinical practice, organizational environment, and IEN specific issues such as state board registration and seminars on communication issues, workplace ethics, and how to handle workplace issues such as discrimination. Abstract As a new generation of scholars takes research in nursing history in some innova- tive directions, nursing archives and archivists face new demands and challenges. Many research collections are housed in small, private archives that face unique issues pertaining to access, privacy, and funding. Whether working with large or small archives, historians and archivists alike confront significant gaps in the primary resource base for nursing history, and must at the same time grapple with how best to define the category of nurse, past and present. Nursing history is experiencing a renaissance of sorts. Once a central preoccupation of nursing educators and scholars (as reflected in the many history textbooks authored by early-twentieth century nursing leaders such as Isabel Maitland Stewart'), the place of history in nursing education and research waned during the 1960s and 1970s as scholars turned their attention to clinical studies and the applied sciences.

As you well know, L&C is responsible for licensing and certifying Home Health Agencies (HHAs) under state and federal laws and regulations. L&C consulted extensively with the Department’s Office of Legal Services in researching the questions you posed and preparing appropriate responses to them. This letter will restate your original question and then provide L&C’s response on a question-by-question basis. Question 1: May an unlicensed agency provide a licensed nurse (registered nurse [RN] or licensed vocational nurse [LVN]) to render skilled services (medication set ups, diabetes testing, insulin injections, etc.) to patients in their temporary or permanent places of residence, if these services were not ordered by a physician? Response: No. An unlicensed agency cannot provide a RN or LVN to render skilled services to patients in their temporary or permanent places of residence, whether or not the services were ordered by a physician. By providing the services of licensed nurses, an unlicensed agency is operating a home health agency, because its business activities come within the statutory definition of a home health agency in Health and Safety Code section 1727 (a).

The Inventory of Resources is not meant to be prescriptive nor presumed to be all inclusive of teaching and learning resources related to the use of health information and communication technologies. BACKGROUND The Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) has actively deliberated the transformation of healthcare delivery through information technology in recent years. In 2011 CASN launched a project, Generating Momentum to Prepare Nursing Graduates for the Electronic World of Health Care Delivery, funded by Canada Health Infoway. This project focused on educating future nurses on the use of information structures, processes and technology to provide safe and effective patient care. One component of this project dealt with developing the capacity of Canadian nurse educators’ to teach nursing informatics. METHODOLOGY CASN and the project’s Resources Working Group (RWG) of faculty members and other key stakeholders, has guided the implementation of an environmental scan on faculty development resources in the area of nursing informatics (NI). The outcome of the scan is an inventory of Canadian and international faculty development NI resources, and in particular, those providing guidance on how to integrate NI skills and competencies into curricula and practice.

    ISSUES BRIEF Nursing Attrition During COVID-19 July 2021 Background It has long been known that the number of nurses retiring and leaving the profession across Canada and globally has outweighed the number of students graduating from nursing programs. This problem has been documented by the International Council of Nurses (ICN)/World Health Organization (WHO) State of the World’s Nursing 2020 report, which outlines factors such as an older demographic of workforce approaching retirement, jurisdictions investing less in health care employment, and deteriorating quality of work life due to understaffing as primary causes.i It is uncertain at this time how the COVID-19 pandemic will affect the Canadian nursing shortage moving forward, but it is likely to cause further strain on the system. Job vacancies in the health care and social assistance sectors risen drastically over the latter part of 2020, increasing by approximately 36,400 jobs (~56.9%), and now totalling more than 100,000 vacancies.ii The majority of these vacancies have occurred in hospitals, with 15,700 more vacancies in 2020 than in 2019, followed by nursing and residential care facilities, with approximately 10,800 more vacancies at the end of 2020 compared to 2019.iii Anecdotal reports from nurses in direct care facilities confirm the impact the increased vacancy level is having on their work. Recent studies conducted in British Columbia and Ontario demonstrate that nurses are feeling particularly ‘burned out’ as a result of the pandemic, and there is an alarmingly high trend in early career nurses who plan to leave the profession immediately following the pandemic.iv These statistics are concerning and reflect the increase in stressors and mental health challenges that nurses have had to face during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our understanding of the factors associated with or predictive of nurse faculty retention and/or turnover is lacking. Purpose: The aim of this review is to identify and synthesize the existing literature on factors contributing to nurse faculty shortage in Canada and implications on nursing practice. Methods: A scoping review based on the Arskey and O’Malley’s five stage framework for scoping reviews was undertaken. Utilising the PRISMA protocol, a comprehensive and structured literature search was conducted in five databases of studies published in English. Findings: Limited through search inclusion and relevance of research, nine studies out of 220 papers met the criteria for this review and were thematically analyzed. Identified themes were: supply versus demand; employment conditions; organizational support; and personal factors. Discussion: Impending retirement of faculty, unsupportive leadership, and stressful work environments were frequently reported as significant contributing factors to the faculty shortage. Conclusions: This scoping review provide insights into how Canada’s schools of nursing could engage in grounded efforts to lessen nursing faculty shortage, both nationally and globally.

    Running head: ENHANCED NURSING ROLES WITH THE POTENTIAL TO IMPROVE HEALTH CARE IN CANADA Enhanced Nursing Roles with the Potential to Improve Health Care in Canada Sarah Alexandra Corina Smith University of Victoria ENHANCED NURSING ROLES WITH THE POTENTIAL TO IMPROVE 2 HEALTH CARE IN CANADA EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This report identifies four new and emerging nursing roles and links these four roles to current and future health needs of the Canadian population. This report was produced for the Office of Nursing Policy (ONP), Health Canada. The four roles discussed in this report are: nurse practitioner, nurse endoscopist, nurse practitioner in anesthesia care, and RN (Registered Nurse) First Call. All of these roles are either expanded or advanced nursing practice roles and have been recently introduced into the Canadian health care system. Expanded roles are roles that extend beyond the usual or regulated scope of registered nursing practice, while advanced nursing practice roles are those which require an advanced level of clinical practice. In Canada, these roles require graduate level education and a broad depth of nursing knowledge. Through researching each of these four roles, it was found that each could contribute to a specific area of the health care system. This report has two main deliverables, a Literature Review and Recommendations regarding potential future actions for ONP. To complete the Literature Review, peer- reviewed journal articles, reports produced by organizations, such as the Canadian Nurses Association, as well as internal documents, and media articles were researched. The review also includes an international scan, which identifies nursing roles present in the United States and the United Kingdom that are similar to the four roles available in Canada.
