PoliticIt - 1 PoliticIt In November 2011, students at the Huntsman School noticed that the political discussion surrounding the presidential race was evolving from previous elections, as politics shifted from exclusively mainstream media to include blogs, Facebook, and Twitter. But traditional political polling does not capture real-time activity; it is weeks behind what is actually happening. With backgrounds in Management Information Systems, Finance, and Entrepreneurship, these students utilized their Huntsman School education to create a new website called “Politicit”. Using neural network technology, the site gathers information about political candidates from social networks and mainstream media and uses it to give each candidate an “It” score, indicating how people feel about the candidate in real time. So far, the site predicts the poll results remarkably well long before they are published. In December, Politicit entered the Intel Innovators competition, and placed in the top 5. In the future, the team plans to expand the site to also cover state and local politics.

    Cihannüma Tarih ve Coğrafya Araştırmaları Dergisi Sayı III/1 – Temmuz 2017, 123-172 BİR RAHİBİN KALEMİNDEN ALEMDAR MUSTAFA PAŞA’NIN SARRAFI MANUK MİRZAYAN BEY Silvart Malhasyan* & Aysel Yıldız** Rusçuk ayanları Tirsiniklioğlu İsmail Ağa (ö. 1806) ile Alemdar Mustafa Paşa’nın (ö.1808) uzun süre sarraflığını yapan ve Osmanlı tebaası olan Manuk Mirzayan’ın (ö. 1817) hikâyesi küçük bir Balkan kasabası olan Rusçuk’ta başlar, İstanbul’a uzanır, tekrar Rusçuk, ardından Bükreş’te devam eder ve nihayetinde bir Rus vatandaşı olarak yerleştiği Hınçeşti’de sona erer. Maceralı hayatı kadar ilişki kurduğu insanlar da son derece önemli ve renkli simalardır. Aynen kendisi gibi taşrada yükselerek sadece yerel değil İmparatorluk çapında önemli siyasi aktörlere dönüşen Tirsiniklioğlu İsmail Ağa ve özellikle Alemdar Mustafa Paşa bu listenin en başında gelir. Her ikisinin sağ kolu olan Köse Ahmed, II. Mahmud döneminin meşhur kaptan-ı deryası Abdullah Ramiz Paşa, Mustafa Refik Efendi, Mehmed Emin Behiç Efendi, Hasan Tahsin Efendi, Kadı Abdurrahman Paşa, Eflak voyvodası Alexander İpsilanti gibi birçok Osmanlı bürokratı veya taşra elitiyle yakın ilişkileri vardır. Bunun yanı sıra, General Miladoroviç ve Prozorovski gibi 1806- 1812 Osmanlı-Rus savaşının bazı Rus komutan ve devlet adamları ile Bükreş’teki Rus konsolosu Luca Kiriko’yla da bağlantılarını devam ettirmiştir. Dolayısıyla Manuk Bey’in hayatını incelemek yalnızca Rusçuk, Bükreş ve İstanbul’daki siyasi ve ekonomik gelişmeleri değil, on dokuzuncu yüzyılın ilk yarısında Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nda cereyan eden önemli iç ve dış siyasi, diplomatik ve sosyal olayları da takip etmek demektir. Halen birçok anlamda detaylı incelenmeye muhtaç olan 1800-1820’ler arasında cereyan olayların farklı cephelerinin daha iyi anlaşılması açısından Manuk Mirzayan kilit bir konuma haizdir.

Charles Doussault (1814–1880), a French painter and illustrator, became known as an Orientalist painter following his voyages to the Ottoman Empire; he also paid special attention to Wallachia, which he visited during the first half of the 19th century. There, he becomes an integral part of society and is welcomed in the boyars’ homes and at the Court so much so that, in August 1843, he is invited by Prince Gheorghe Bibescu to be part of his delegation going to Constantinople to pay tribute to the sultan.

În realizarea calendarului am avut ca idee centrală raportarea cu prioritate la comunitatea ieșeană, prin actualizarea exemplelor date de personalități marcante ale literaturii, ştiinţei şi artei care au jucat un rol local, național sau universal, fapt dovedit și de produsul final, unde aceste trimiteri se constituie în majoritatea notelor cronologice, la care am adăugat și trimiteri la datele naționale și internaționale, pe baza criteriilor date de relevanța lor la nivelul domeniului în care au excelat și al notorietății, precum și al încadrării duratei la un număr cât mai rotund de ani, față de anul de referință 2017.

    Cihannüma Tarih ve Coğrafya Araştırmaları Dergisi Sayı III/1 – Temmuz 2017, 23-43 FROM RUSCUK TO BESSARABIA: MANUK BEY AND THE CAREER OF AN OTTOMAN-RUSSIAN MIDDLEMAN AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 19TH CENTURY Stefania Costache* Abstract The life and political career of Manuk Mirzayan (d. 1817), the Armenian money-lender and acolyte of Mustapha Pasha Bairaktar, the ayan of Ruscuk, presents a good case of study of a Ottoman-Russian middleman of the early 19th century Balkans. As a product of the complicated internal and international problems of the Ottoman Balkans, he aptly managed to survive amongst the conflict between two empires and even benefited from the international conflicts as a middleman. By tracing his activities from Ruscuk to Bessarabia, this paper argues that Manuk’s decisions can be considered as strategies to improve his status and secure his life in an environment about which he could only speculate but which clearly favored agents who could cater to the competing interests of different empires and political factions. THE CASE OF MANUC BEY Alina Felea Institute of History, State and Law, Academy of Sciences (Kishinev, Republic of Moldova) [email protected] Rezumat: Articolul se referă la viaţa privată a lui Manuc Bey, dragoman al Porţii Otomane, consilier de stat al Imperiului Rus, care a fost o persoană bine cunoscută la începutul secolului al XIX-lea. Cu privire la activităţile sale politice s-au scris monografii, articole ştiinţifice şi publicistice. În acest studiu, pe baza testamentelor lui Manuc Bey şi fiicei sale Pemba, oferim câteva date privitoare la relaţiile între membrii familiei lui Manuc, la viaţa copiilor săi, nepoţilor şi strănepoţilor. Cercetarea se bazează atât pe materiale de arhivă, cât şi pe lucrări publicate. Testamentul lui Manuc Bey a provocat un litigiu între moştenitori, care s-a întins pe mai mulţi ani. Actul menţionat este o sursă importantă pentru studiul mentalităţilor şi cotidianului epocii, pentru stabilirea liniei genealogice a lui Manuc. Descendenţii lui Manuc Bey au avut legături de rudenie cu familii nobile din Rusia şi din străinătate. Totodată, unii dintre urmaşii lui au devenit oameni de ştiinţă apreciaţi în mediul academic european. Résumé: L’article ci-joint fait référence à la vie privée du Drogman de la Porte ottomane, conseiller d’Etat de l’Empire Russe Manuc Bey, qui a été une personne très connue au début du XIX-ème siècle. On a écrit des monographies, des articles scientifiques et de presse sur ses activités politiques. On offre dans cette étude, à la base de laquelle ont été les testaments de Manuc Bey et de sa fille, Pemba, quelques données des relations entre les membres de la famille de Manuc, de la vie de ses enfants, de ses petits-fils et de ses arrière petits-fils.
