Kennedy Cambridge International Primary Achievement Test - November 2011 Cambridge International Primary Programme gives our young students a curriculum framework to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of English, Mathematics and Science. It provides guidance for curriculum development, classroom teaching and learning, and enables teachers to assess children’s learning as they progress. The Cambridge International Primary Achievement Test [CIPAT] was held in GSIS on 31 October, 1 and 2 November 2011. The test was taken by 21 students of Grade VI (IGCSE stream) in English, Mathematics and Science. Meryl John and Sirawas Leksakul have jointly topped the examinations held in our school with an achievement level of 15 points. 7 students shared the second position with the achievement level of 14 points. Shubh Agarwal and Sirawas Leksakul scored the maximum achievement level of 6 points in Mathematics. Kaustubh Agarwal, Aryadeep Shah and Sirawas Leksakul scored the maximum achievement level of 6 points in Science. 2 students in English, 6 students in Mathematics and 11 students in Science scored an achievement level of 5 points. The result is the outcome of the hard work and good time management of our students. This is a tribute to the commitment and dedication of our teachers. Guests at GSIS Rear Admiral Srikant, the Flag Officer (Submarines) based at Visakhapatnam, visited GSIS on 16 December 2011. Rear Admiral Srikant was commissioned into the Indian Navy in 1981. He is an alumnus of the Sainik School, Bijapur and the National Defence College, New Delhi. Prior to his present appointment, he was commanding the destroyer, Indian Naval Ship Delhi. He also held many prestigious Command and Staff Appointments including Command of Submarine Shalki and Indian Naval Ship Ranvijay. His shore appointments include that of Deputy Director, Submarine Operations and Naval Intelligence. He served as Naval Advisor (Islamabad) and Project Manager, Advanced Technology Vessel Program, New Delhi. Principal Dr. P.C. Thomas taught him English Rear Admiral Srikant from 1971 – 74. Mrs. Janet Hurd, Director, Student Recruitment, University of Toronto, was our Guest of Honour for a formal dinner held in GSIS on Saturday, 29 October 2011. Earlier, she conducted a seminar for all the students of Grades XI and XII on higher education in Canada. Mrs. Hurd has spent many years working with high school students and at the University of Toronto. Mrs. Janet Hurd Mrs. Sreevalsa Nair conducted a professional developmental programme for the academic staff on 4 January 2012. She spoke on dyslexia / learning disabilities and disorders in children when the brain does not properly recognize and process certain symbols. This impairs a person’s fluency or comprehension, accuracy in reading, writing, spelling, listening, speaking, reasoning or doing mathematics. Mrs. Sreevalsa Nair, a graduate in Mathematics and a qualified educator for dyslexic children, discussed various techniques which would help in coping with these problems. She is the wife of Rear Admiral P.K. Nair, the Chief Instructor(Navy), DSSC, Wellington. She is a good dancer and enjoys reading Mrs. Sreevalsa Nair modern and classic literature. A step towards success It was a great moment of pride when Shruti Pratapsinh Mungi of FM IIIC received the consolation prize in the essay writing competition conducted by the United Schools Organisation of India (USO) on 10 December 2011. The topic for the essay writing was ‘No religion teaches hatred’. Thousands of children from all over India participated in this competition and it is indeed Shruti’s flair for writing that earned her the prize. Bhasin, Chairman & Managing Director, Indian Bank, was the Chief Guest for the Investiture and Graduation ceremonies held in GSIS on 25 February 2012. T.M. Bhasin in his capacity has served Oriental Bank of Commerce for three decades starting his career as Probationary Officer on 17 June 1978. He has spearheaded and played a key role in setting up Joint Venture Company for Life Insurance in partnership of Oriental Bank of Commerce with Canara Bank & HSBC (Insurance). He earned his MBA (Finance) degree from Faculty of Management Studies, University of Delhi. He attended the Advanced Financial Management Programme at JFK School of Government, Harvard, United States of America Mr. T.M. Bhasin and holds an LL.B. from Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi. He is the recipient of various awards and accolades. General V.P. Malik served as the Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army from 01 October 1997 till 30 September 2000. He graduated from the Defense Services Staff College, Wellington and has received the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal for distinguished service to the Indian Army and to the nation. He was the Army Chief during Kargil War. Mr. Malik is presently a resident of Panchkula, Haryana. He visited GSIS and attended a special assembly on 21 February 2012, the founding day of the school in 1977. General V.P. Malik A Step to face Challenges A special school assembly General V.P. The programme commenced with the school prayer followed by the welcome address by Kasturi Jogdand of Class XII. General V.P.Malik addressed the students and staff of Good Shepherd International School on the topic ‘Challenges Facing the Nation’. He touched on various crucial points which the nation faces today. It was followed by an interactive session in which students clarified their doubts and also realized the part they should play in the progress of the nation. The two-hour programme culminated with the expression of gratitude by Ujjwal Kamalia, in which he thanked General V.P. Malik and Dr. Ranjana Malik for taking some time off their busy schedule to enlighten the students on the problems that India faces and effective solutions that will help the nation rise from a grovelling state.
