Genius Bar January 2021 1. Why should I have to turn off my Mac? 1. Turning off the Mac performs some reset functions as well as a memory reset. It is not advised by Apple to leave your Mac on for an extended period of time. Turning a computer off every night is still not advised by Apple. It is best to put your Mac to sleep when not in use; this way, it can perform maintenance or other tasks. 2. How to reset the SMC of your Mac 1. https://support.apple.com/kb/HT201295 Performing an SMC reset can resolve certain issues related to Power, Battery, Fans, and other features on the Mac. • MDM Talk Handout
Mobile Device Management (MDM) For iOS Devices My Mobile Device Management Recommendations: MY PRIORITIES • Device Performance • Device Security • Device task customization • Device Inventory Use MDM to manage: • Device Passcode (users often forget or change this, device recovery, remote wipe) • Install apps without users using their Apple ID • Push out a standard set of apps based on the dept. division the device has been assigned to. We have different set of apps for: Clerical, Management, Quarantine, F&V, Weights & Measures, Trapping, Pesticides, Vertebrate/Weeds. • Enforce the most current iOS and App updates, very important in iOS for app stability • Device Inventory and user assignment Prior to getting your iPads 1. Each user needs create an Apple id using their County issued government email account and address - Appleid.apple.com 2. When setting up the iPad, log in with the Users Apple ID (person assigned to using the iPad) in both the” iTunes & App Store” and “iCloud” (very important) 3. Each user needs to have their device backing up their data into their own iCloud account, that way it's so easy to restore the user/data/settings/email if and when they get a new device or change devices, we use it all the time, so easy. I also recommend purchasing for $.99/month 200 GB of iCloud storage for each apple id account. I use one county credit card to do this by logging into the icloud settings and making changing the storage options, very easy. Apple hits the credit card automatically each month and it can be stopped at anytime.

  • Apple M1 Chip Small Chip, Huge Leap
Apple M1 Chip Small chip, huge leap Every once in a while the world of technology makes a giant leap forward. The first personal computers, wide adoption of the internet and the first iPhones were not only fascinating and useful technology in and of themselves, but they also transformed an entire industry, spurring competitors and collaborators to new heights. The Apple M1 chip heralds one of those leaps. Reviewers love the M1 Apple's ARM-based M1 chip will mean astounding efficiency, speed and performance for Mac and Mac-based programs and frameworks, and reviews were . gushing might not be too strong a word for it. One reviewer for engadget.com positively swooned over his experience with the new M1-based MacBook Air1: “Apple's new MacBook Air is stunningly fast. It's raring to go the instant you open its lid. Want to browse the web? Watch it load bloated sites faster than you've ever seen on a laptop. Want to play some games? Step back as it blows away every ultraportable, with no fan noise to get in the way. And if you need to take a break, don't worry. It's got enough battery life to last you all day. Using the new MacBook Air is like stepping into a new world where we can demand much more from ultraportables.” 1 “MacBook Air M1 review: Faster than most PCs, no fan required,” engadget.com, November 17, 2020 One gobsmacked developer pointed out on his Twitter feed that Xcode 12.3 beta unzips in five minutes on an M1 Apple Silicon-based machine versus 13 minutes and 22 seconds on And Jamf’s own CEO Dean Hager, after ordering his own a device using Intel i9.

Rosetta 2 iPhone and iPad apps can directly run on Mac A binary translation software allows most x86 programs to be able to execute after an initial translation step. Why is Apple M1 so fast? Firestorm Cores (starting A14) Beat most Intel cores and almost beats the fastest AMD Ryzen cores ● Perform more instructions in a sequence faster. ● Perform lots of instructions in parallel. Refill the instruction buffer quickly relies on decoding code instruction into micro-ops. ● 4 decoders (Intel and AMD) vs. ● 8 decoders (Apple) Firestorm Cores (starting A14) A win for RISC vs. CISC ● Various length x86 instruction (1-15 bytes) ● Fixed length ARM instruction (4 bytes) Intel and AMD attempt to decode instructions at every possible starting point ● Convoluted and complicated decoder stage ● Hard to add more Twice as many instructions as AMD and Intel CPUs at the same clock frequency Firestorm Cores (starting A14) Huge out-of-order window ● Apple - 630 ROB ● Intel Sunny Cove and Willow Cove - 352 ROB ● AMD Zen3 - 256 ROB ● Arm Cortex-X1 - 224 ROB High ILP (Instruction level-parallelism) with many, many Execution Units.

  • Tech Bulletin
Technical Bulletin ATTO Host Adapters, NICs and ThunderLinks KEXT Driver Security Issues in macOS 11 with Apple Silicon This bulletin is to inform ATTO customers off a recent security change made within Apple’s macOS Big Sur 11.0 and Apple M1 silicon that effects third party kext drivers. This change effects ATTO ThunderLink, NIC, and HBA kext drivers. By default, Apple silicon products have a security setting that may impact and disable third part kernel extensions (kext) drivers. To allow for third party kext drivers, this setting can be changed within the Mac’s Security Policy. The setting should be changed from “Full Security” to “Reduced Security” within the macOS Recovery Security Utility. Please see the link below and instructions from Apple to alter this security setting. Feel free to contact ATTO Technical support if you have any questions. https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/change-startup-disk-security-settings-a-mac-mchl768f7291/mac Change the level of security used on your startup disk 1. On the Mac with Apple silicon, choose Apple menu > Shut Down. 2. Press and hold the power button until you see “Loading startup options.” 3. Click Options, then click Continue. If requested, enter the password for an administrator account. Your Mac opens in Recovery mode. 4. In macOS Recovery, choose Utilities > Startup Security Utility. 5. Select the startup disk you want to use to set the security policy. If the disk is encrypted with FileVault, click Unlock, enter the password, then click Unlock. 6. Click Security Policy. 7. Review the following security options: • Full Security: Ensures that only your current OS, or signed operating system software currently trusted by Apple, can run.

Portal > Knowledgebase > Desktop Computing and Printing > Apple Macintosh Computers > macOS Big Sur (OS 11) What Works? macOS Big Sur (OS 11) What Works? Christopher Grossi - 2021-06-22 - 0 Comments - in Apple Macintosh Computers On Thursday, November 12, Apple released its newest operating system, macOS Big Sur (macOS 11). CIS is evaluating the final release of Big Sur for compatibility with Brown's computing environment and upgrading our systems and software where necessary. Although the "beta" version appeared to work well in Brown's computing environment, we do not yet recommend upgrading due to the need to update some software titles for compatibility with new Big Sur features. We will soon have a list of services that are validated against Big Sur on this page. Please check back frequently for details as our work continues. In conjunction with the release of Big Sur, Apple is now shipping three new Apple Silicon Mac models (MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 13in, and Mac mini) to start their 2-year transition from Intel architecture. At this time, only the MacBook Air model has been completely transitioned from Intel to Apple Silicon (you can still purchase an Intel MacBook Pro 13in or Mac mini). Endpoint Engineering is awaiting delivery of examples so that we can validate our management framework and supported software, but we can provide some guidance at this time based on reports. In general, we can recommend any of these models as replacements for their Intel predecessors, provided that users are not dependent on Intel hardware-specific features (such as BootCamp or virtualizing Windows or x86-compiled Linux distributions), or requirements such as RAM capacity greater than 16GB, storage capacity greater than 2TB, or outputting video to more than one external display.
