IRA SIMMONS IPHONES IPHONE LINEUP: NEW PHONES NEW IPHONE LINEUP FEATURES The biggest difference between the regular and Pro phones this year is cameras. The iPhone 12 mini and base iPhone 12 have regular and ultrawide main cameras. The higher-end Pro phones add optical zoom: 2x on the 12 Pro and 2.5x on the 12 Pro Max. The higher-end phones also have LiDAR sensors to speed autofocus in low light, as well as the ability to capture Dolby Vision HDR video. Five Colors: The iPhone 12 mini and base iPhone 12 come in 64, 128, and 256GB models in black, blue, green, red, or white. The higher-end phones have 128, 256, and 512GB sizes in blue, gold, gray, or silver. NEW IPHONE LINEUP: ABOUT MAGSAFE The new iPhone 12 lineup offers a MagSafe feature that offers fast induction charging through new Apple MagSafe chargers, as well as the ability to attach accessories magnetically to the backside of the iPhone. The MagSafe charging system automatically aligns the iPhone correctly in the charger, relieving the user of the worry of not properly aligning the device for an efficient charging experience. NEW IPHONE LINEUP: ABOUT 5G On paper, 5G promises to be up to 25 times faster than 4G. Download speeds can exceed 4 Gbps, which is way faster than most broadband connections. Movies, games and more can be downloaded in just seconds. From PC Mag: Tests have shown that 5G in the US can't support different applications than 4G, yet. In tests Verizon's network was fast, but only available in 4 percent of our locations. There is a new "nationwide" Verizon 5G network ready to go, but its speeds are slower than 4G. AT&T's 5G network is also slower than 4G. T-Mobile's 5G network came out much faster than its 4G network, but the results overall were still in the 4G range. Phoenix & Surprise: Very limited coverage in Phoenix area (mostly Verizon and Sprint), no 5G is Surprise. IPHONES: ENTIRE LINEUP IOS 14 IOS 14 MAIN FEATURES •Widgets •Picture-in-picture on iPhone: •Siri: The Siri interface has been overhauled to no longer take over the fullscreen and can do speech-to-text transcription entirely on-device for the sake of speed and privacy. •Messages: You can now pin your most important conversations to the top of your messages list, and you can setup notifications on noisy group messages to only alert you when you’re mentioned by name. •CarPlay: CarPlay is getting new wallpaper options, along with a handful of new built-in apps focusing on things like parking, charging, and food ordering. Meanwhile, Apple has been working with a handful of car makers (including BMW) to allow you to use your phone as a key. IPADS IPAD LINEUP iPad Air: (now available for preorder). • a more useful USB-C plug replaces the Lightning connector. • first Apple product with the A14 processor • It supports the Magic Keyboard and 2nd-gen Apple Pencil • It has Touch ID in the top button instead of Face ID Five colors: Space Grey, Silver, Rose Gold, Green, Sky Blue Eighth-generation iPad: The new eighth-generation iPad got a refresh, too, packed with an earlier A12 Bionic chip, giving the iPad a much-needed performance boost. iPad Pro: Last updated in March 2020. IPADS Other older models still available. Check www.apple.com/ipad/compare APPLE WATCH APPLE WATCH (SERIES 6) The new Apple Watch Series 6, priced at $399. The new wearable comes with a new Apple S6 silicon chip with an always-on energy-saving display. It also lands with a blood oxygen sensor. The key new feature in Apple Watch Series 6 is the blood-oxygen sensor that can provide an early warning of a variety of health problems. A new Blood Oxygen app tracks a key measurement that could provide an early warning for some people infected by COVID-19. Unlike commonly used pulse oximeters, which measure oxygenation level when a patient inserts their finger into the inexpensive device, the new Apple Watch sensor can check the wearer’s status around the clock. Apple said it takes just 15 seconds to take the measurement. APPLE WATCH (SERIES 6) Fitness+: Apple is launching a new fitness subscription, landing at $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year. The service is available from inside the Activity app, Solo Loop: You can now get a Solo Loop for your Apple Watch, a single band that drops the standard clasp in favor of stretchy silicon. It comes in seven colors and a range of sizes. Apple also announced a newer low-cost wearable, Apple Watch SE, which it priced at $279. APPLE WATCH OS7 Key new health-related features include “holistic” sleep tracking and a hygiene app that reminds wearers to wash their hands for a full 20 seconds. On the fitness front, watchOS 7 adds four new workouts: dance, functional strength training, core training and cooldown. The Apple Watch’s companion Activity app on iPhone gets a new name — Fitness — and a new design that streamlines your activity and workout data. The new Apple Watch software also comes with some functional and fashionable upgrades.

Each user needs to have their device backing up their data into their own iCloud account, that way it's so easy to restore the user/data/settings/email if and when they get a new device or change devices, we use it all the time, so easy. I also recommend purchasing for $.99/month 200 GB of iCloud storage for each apple id account. I use one county credit card to do this by logging into the icloud settings and making changing the storage options, very easy. Apple hits the credit card automatically each month and it can be stopped at anytime.

    Technical Bulletin ATTO Host Adapters, NICs and ThunderLinks KEXT Driver Security Issues in macOS 11 with Apple Silicon This bulletin is to inform ATTO customers off a recent security change made within Apple’s macOS Big Sur 11.0 and Apple M1 silicon that effects third party kext drivers. This change effects ATTO ThunderLink, NIC, and HBA kext drivers. By default, Apple silicon products have a security setting that may impact and disable third part kernel extensions (kext) drivers. To allow for third party kext drivers, this setting can be changed within the Mac’s Security Policy. The setting should be changed from “Full Security” to “Reduced Security” within the macOS Recovery Security Utility. Please see the link below and instructions from Apple to alter this security setting. If requested, enter the password for an administrator account. Your Mac opens in Recovery mode. 4. In macOS Recovery, choose Utilities > Startup Security Utility. 5. Select the startup disk you want to use to set the security policy. If the disk is encrypted with FileVault, click Unlock, enter the password, then click Unlock. 6. Click Security Policy. 7. Review the following security options: • Full Security: Ensures that only your current OS, or signed operating system software currently trusted by Apple, can run.

CIS is evaluating the final release of Big Sur for compatibility with Brown's computing environment and upgrading our systems and software where necessary. Although the "beta" version appeared to work well in Brown's computing environment, we do not yet recommend upgrading due to the need to update some software titles for compatibility with new Big Sur features. We will soon have a list of services that are validated against Big Sur on this page. Please check back frequently for details as our work continues. In conjunction with the release of Big Sur, Apple is now shipping three new Apple Silicon Mac models (MacBook Air, MacBook Pro 13in, and Mac mini) to start their 2-year transition from Intel architecture. At this time, only the MacBook Air model has been completely transitioned from Intel to Apple Silicon (you can still purchase an Intel MacBook Pro 13in or Mac mini). Endpoint Engineering is awaiting delivery of examples so that we can validate our management framework and supported software, but we can provide some guidance at this time based on reports. In general, we can recommend any of these models as replacements for their Intel predecessors, provided that users are not dependent on Intel hardware-specific features (such as BootCamp or virtualizing Windows or x86-compiled Linux distributions), or requirements such as RAM capacity greater than 16GB, storage capacity greater than 2TB, or outputting video to more than one external display.
