Stavanger, 04.05.2019 date/year Abstract The present text is a research into the language usage in Computer-Mediated Communication, specifically on the online streaming platform Twitch.tv. The study will discuss Twitch’s language variety with a focus on Twitch emotes and discourse characteristics of a Twitch chat log. Studying Twitch emotes is the underlying method of this research as the thesis will attempt to distinguish meaning from the top 5 most used emotes on Twitch and try to establish the context to which these emotes occur. The focus group of this thesis is from selected livestreams that average between 30-500 viewers, characterized as a “participatory community”. Participatory communities are distinguished as communities that encourage openness and calls for its members to engage in shared activities, thus creating a shared identity and history online. With this focus group, the present study will conduct a qualitative survey regarding the participants’ perception of Twitch emotes and a Computer-mediated Discourse Analysis (CMDA) of the chat logs in order to find emote context, how emotes affect the participatory community and discourse characteristics of a Twitch chat. Conducting research on online behavior is often anecdotal or speculative; however, the approach to answering the research questions in this thesis was done by combining the participants’ perception of emotes and by analyzing and extracting a valuable answer from the chat log. What the qualitative survey revealed was that the perception of emotes was varied, meaning it had more than just one mode of expression, yet its expressions were somewhat similar. By using the survey findings as framework for the chat log samples, the CMDA findings revealed that Twitch’s discourse characteristics had the same features as any other online medium, the context to which emotes occurred correlated with the participants’ perception of emotes, and that some emotes promoted others to respond whereas some emotes did not. The starting point of this research was the observation of the design process of an online platform for informal caregivers. I realized that there is no knowledge about the practical effects that an anony- mous identity system would have. This thesis contains the subsequent literature review, which has been synthesized into a model that shows which participation factors might be influenced by anonymity. Three studies on existing online en- vironments have been conducted: One on Youtube, where there was a change in the comment system forbidding anonymous comments; one on Quora, where users can choose to answer questions anonymously; and one on Hacker News, where users choose how many identity factors they want to present and which name they use.

The fandom is known for its diversity, as most in the fandom were either queer and/or female. Primarily, however, the fandom was infamous for a subsection of fans, antis, who performed online harassment, including blackmailing, stalking, sending death threats and child porn to other fans, and abusing the cast and crew. Their motivation was primarily shipping, the act of wanting two characters to enter a romantic relationship. Those who opposed their chosen ship were targets of harassment, despite their shared identity markers of female and/or queer. Inspired by ethnographically and autoethnography informed methods, I performed a survey of the Voltron: Legendary Defender fandom about their experiences with harassment and their feelings over the show’s universally panned conclusion. In implementing my research, I prioritized only using data given to me, a form of ethical consideration on how to best represent the trauma of others. Unfortunately, in performing this research, I became a target of harassment and altered my research trajectory. In response, I collected the various threats against me and used them to analyze online fandom harassment and the motivations of antis.

Thus far many of these genres have been deemed at best disruptive and at worst anti-social, but when studied from a judgment-free point of view show high levels of complexity and offer us excellent opportunities to understand how the Internet is shaping and being shaped by new kinds and contexts of communication. One of these genres of interaction that has gained significant fame on some very popular forums and discussion sites is called trolling. Trolling occurs on discussion sites or message boards when a user intentionally posts erroneous or inflammatory information with the intention of provoking a strong reaction out of other users. Mi objetivo ha sido analizar el impacto que las nuevas tecnologías, utilizando acrónimos, emoticonos y otros, han tenido en el inglés estándar escrito. El lenguaje electrónico es un texto escrito que ha absorbido y se ha transformado, en nuevas formas semióticas. Estos nuevos códigos, utilizados para interconectar e interactuar entre los usuarios, han cambiado la manera en que la gente se expresa, así como el lenguaje escrito lo que ha llevado a dar menos importancia a la ortografía. La Lingüística ha tenido una considerable influencia en la práctica de los mensajes de texto. Vamos a examinar tres campos principales de la lingüística: la semántica, la fonética y la sociolingüística. A través de un cuestionario auto-diseñado (15 preguntas, 90 respuestas) se ha sabido que los participantes eran conscientes de que preferían escribir los mensajes en un inglés más estándar. Palabras clave: mensajes de texto, acrónimos, whatsapp, emoticonos, lingüística. Abstract Texting has produced new forms of interaction possible. My aim has been to analyze the impact new technologies employing acronyms, emoticons and the like have had on Standard written English. Electronic language is a written text that has absorbed and become transformed through novel semiotic forms. These new codes, used to interconnect and interact among users, have started to change the way people express themselves and at the same time, the written language which has led to placing less importance on spelling.
