HEALTH CARE PHILANTHROPY A PROMISE FOR TOMORROW

It’s worth remembering that there were 51.5 weeks in the fiscal year before COVID-19 arrived in our province and community on March 12th, 2020.

The good work done before the pandemic underscores a critical measure of faith taken by each and every single donor to the KGH Foundation; that by taking action now, one can impact on the future of health care in our community. Indeed, this trust has allowed Kelowna General Hospital, its associated facilities and our local, frontline health care workers to rise up to meet the current unprecedented challenge in our health system with the supports they need in place.

The last fiscal year for the KGH Foundation was as characteristically remarkable as so many of the years gone by. The trajectory of growth and the massive impact of the advancements made possible by donors are significant.

Because you give, JoeAnna’s House opened its doors this year and has remained open for families throughout the pandemic. Foundry Kelowna resourced additional supports to

ensure that youth and families struggling with mental health challenges during this very Wesley Shields difficult time have a navigator to help them find their way through a complicated system of care. IT’S BEEN A GOOD RIDE BIKE ‘N BRAAI

One of KGH Foundation’s signature and perhaps most active event is the Bike ‘n Braai. For over 12 years, the annual cycle and Braai (Afrikaans for BBQ) has raised over $265,000 to support Kelowna General Hospital. Most recently hosted by a small group of committee members (Mark Yudin, Betty Yao, Gord Fawcett, and Julie Fiorentino) the event connected physicians, nurses and other members of the medical community to support their local hospital. Over the years, riders got to experience all of the Okanagan beauty. With routes from Kelowna to Coldstream, around South East Kelowna, and lastly along the Okanagan Rail Trail, this annual event has been an instrumental fundraising initiative.

Whether you participated in the ever-challenging hill climb, cycled along with family and friends, joined the BBQ festivities or graciously provided a donation, we’d like to thank you for your support. While 2019 marked the end of an incredible 12 year journey, we hope you have many memories to cherish and continue to cycle the routes for years to come. JOEANNA’S HOUSE A VERY SPECIAL GIFT CINDY’S STORY

Still, JoeAnna’s House, it’s been said, is the most beautiful home one hopes to never have to stay at.

Just a few weeks after it opened, Cindy Howes, a member of the Salmon Arm Rotary Club, became ill with what was originally thought to be pneumonia. Vibrant and healthy at 56, it was a shock for Cindy and her family when she was transferred to KGH and learned that she had stage IV lung cancer.

Cindy’s sister, Nicki, arrived at JoeAnna’s House on New Year’s Eve. Over the next few weeks, the staff welcomed eight members of Cindy’s family to JoeAnna’s House including her son, daughter and partner, brother and sister. They flew in from across Western Canada. Travelling from Saskatchewan, Cindy’s elderly parents were the last to arrive.

The family stayed close to Cindy in the coming weeks, as her condition continued to decline. On January 21, she passed away.

“Being able to stay at JoeAnna’s House and be with Cindy in her final days was such an incredible gift for all of us,” says Nicki. “It was home for those weeks. I worked from my laptop at kitchen banquette or sitting in the living room, and coordinated meals for my family. The most important part was being able to walk and see Cindy whenever she needed us, or when we needed her.”

“Cindy was so proud that she and her fellow Rotarians played a part in making JoeAnna’s House possible,” reflects Nicki. “It’s a beautiful part of her story and we will do everything we can to continue her legacy of supporting JoeAnna’s House.”

JIM ECCOTT GRIT, GRACE & GENEROSITY

This past March, Jim Eccott, respected entrepreneur and treasured member of the KGH Foundation family, passed away. His contributions span decades. Mr. Eccott availed himself to serve Kelowna General Hospital in myriad ways, from donor to volunteer, board director to trusted advisor. He was direct while still being charming, uncompromising in his commitment to accountability, exceptionally smart and an inveterate story-teller. Jim was as gritty as he was generous, a man with a presence I will never forget.

Jim had a very successful career as an entrepreneur and as a CEO, ultimately providing senior leadership to Diamet Minerals through the growth of the diamond mining industry in Canada. At the time of his passing, he was a Director on the KGH Foundation board, with previous appointments on the UBC Board of Governors and the VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation. Jim served on our Finance and Administration Committee and was instrumental in the management of the endowment portfolio. He approached his position as a Director in exactly the same way he ran the businesses that he operated throughout his life. He was Remembering Jim Eccott, friend, always the one around the table to ask the uncomfortable questions no one else would ask – donor, board member and mentor and everyone wished they had - then add levity with a little smile and an apology for being so direct; as if to say, ‘Sorry (not sorry).’

At the time of my hiring in 2011, Jim participated in the interview panel. The other board members knew Jim would ask the ‘good’ questions. His first question to me was regarding the current campaign to outfit the Centennial building. The goal was to raise $6 million. Jim matter-of-factly stated, “That’s a hell of a lot of money”. Then, without pause, he looked me straight in the eye and said, “where are you going to get it?”

Jim was gracious and accepted my hesitant and uncertain answer. Later, Jim became a mentor and a friend, offering good advice, relating his vast experiences and telling amazing stories along the way. There was always a lesson to be learned.

Philanthropy was natural for Jim. His no-nonsense style translated into a thoughtful and forward thinking approach to giving. He chose projects that demonstrated innovation and collaboration. He would leverage his involvement to accelerate causes he was passionate about, preferring projects with clear and demonstrable impact, like a critical care redevelopment and youth mental health. Ultimately, his contributions to KGH and health care in our region add up to a remarkable legacy, and the imprint of Jim’s generosity will be felt far beyond his living years.

Preferring common sense over pleasantries, he may have been perceived as somewhat old fashioned but I will miss Jim’s frankness, his candor and his honesty. I will miss the raconteur who could share colourful stories about a great number of people, with the grace to tell only a few. I may have a gathered a few interesting stories about this legendary man myself over the years. But he has taught me well. Rest in peace, my friend.
