A LATE QUARTET February 10 Th & 11 Th cinéSARNIA presents A LATE QUARTET February 10 th & 11 th Please check our web site at cinesarnia .com for upcoming films and other information A LATE QUARTET Yaron Zilberman USA, 2012 English 105 minutes Principal Cast: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Mark Ivanir, Imogen Poots, Christopher Walken, Catherine Keener Distributor: Mongrel Media NEXT FILM: STORIES WE TELL A Late Quartet A Gala Presentation at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival®, A Late Quartet offers a scintillating look into a world of art rarely depicted on screen. First-time feature director Yaron Zilberman assembles a powerhouse cast — Christopher Walken ( Seven Psychopaths , The Affair of the Necklace ), Philip Seymour Hoffman ( The Master, Doubt ), Catherine Keener ( Please Give, Capote ), Mark Ivanir ( 360 ), and rising young star Imogen Poots ( Jane Eyre, Me and Orson Welles ) — for this dramatically charged tale of an illustrious string quartet that is set to celebrate their twenty-fifth season as an ensemble with an ambitious recital of Beethoven’s Late String Quartets. While this milestone would seem to be cause for celebration, it soon becomes a catalyst for the members’ assorted personal traumas and reveals the tangled web of jealousy, envy, ambition, and deeply felt affection that binds the group together. Older than his colleagues, Peter (Walken), the group’s founding member, is diagnosed with a degenerative illness that forces him to confront the troubling question of who will succeed him, and what his legacy will be. The marriage between second violinist Robert (Hoffman) and violist Juliette (Keener) goes suddenly south when infidelity rears its head, while brilliant, headstrong and steel-willed first violinist Daniel (Ivanir), already engaged in a battle over first chair with Robert, brings tensions to a boil when he falls into the arms of Robert and Juliette’s beautiful young daughter Alexandra (Poots), who is a talented violinist in her own right. As the film progresses gracefully through its own “movements,” we see how Peter’s illness brings these discordant elements painfully to the fore, as long-repressed feelings and explosive emotions shatter the delicate harmony that has bound the group together for so long. As the ensemble’s aging patriarch, Walken has never been better, brilliantly etching Peter’s turbulent indecision and, finally, clear-eyed resolve about the right path to take — even as, unbeknownst to him, the four-cornered universe that he has lovingly created begins to fly apart. Not to be outdone, the rest of the cast rise to Walken’s challenge, and director Zilberman (who cowrote the screenplay with Seth Grossman) never missteps, guiding us gracefully through those painful inevitabilities of aging and change that contrast so movingly with the timeless beauty of music. Though the stakes are high, the volume is pitched just right: The film and the performances retain a quiet, forceful elegance that’s perfectly in keeping with the Beethoven they’re playing. —Phillip Crawley , The Globe and Mail .

  • Abel Ferrara
A FILM BY Abel Ferrara Ray Ruby's Paradise, a classy go go cabaret in downtown Manhattan, is a dream palace run by charismatic impresario Ray Ruby, with expert assistance from a bunch of long-time cronies, sidekicks and colourful hangers on, and featuring the most beautiful and talented girls imaginable. But all is not well in Paradise. Ray's facing imminent foreclosure. His dancers are threatening a strip-strike. Even his brother and financier wants to pull the plug. But the dreamer in Ray will never give in. He's bought a foolproof system to win the Lottery. One magic night he hits the jackpot. And loses the ticket... A classic screwball comedy in the madcap tradition of Frank Capra, Billy Wilder and Preston Sturges, from maverick auteur Ferrara. DIRECTOR’S NOTE “A long time ago, when 9 and 11 were just 2 odd numbers, I lived above a fire house on 18th and Broadway. Between the yin and yang of the great Barnes and Noble book store and the ultimate sports emporium, Paragon, around the corner from Warhol’s last studio, 3 floors above, overlooking Union Square. Our local bar was a gothic church made over into a rock and roll nightmare called The Limelite. The club was run by a gang of modern day pirates with Nicky D its patron saint. For whatever reason, the neighborhood became a haven for topless clubs. The names changed with the seasons but the core crews didn't. Decked out in tuxes and razor haircuts, they manned the velvet ropes that separated the outside from the in, 100%.

  • Abel Ferrara Jaeger-Lecoultre Glory To
La Biennale di Venezia / 77th Venice International Film Festival American director Abel Ferrara awarded the Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker 2020 prize His new film Sportin’ Life to be presented Out of Competition La Biennale di Venezia and Jaeger-LeCoultre are pleased to announce that the American director Abel Ferrara (Pasolini, Bad Lieutenant, King of New York) is the recipient of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Glory to the Filmmaker award of the 77th Venice International Film Festival (September 2 - 12, 2020), dedicated to a personality who has made a particularly original contribution to innovation in contemporary cinema. The award ceremony for Abel Ferrara will take place on Saturday September 5th 2020 in the Sala Grande (Palazzo del Cinema) at 2 pm, before the screening Out of Competition of his new film, the documentary Sportin’ Life (Italy, 65') with Abel Ferrara, Willem Dafoe, Cristina Chiriac, Anna Ferrara, Paul Hipp, Joe Delia. With regards to this acknowledgment, the Director of the Venice Film Festival Alberto Barbera has stated: “One of the many merits of Abel Ferrara, who is widely held in esteem despite his reputation as one of the most controversial filmmakers in contemporary cinema, is his undeniable consistency and allegiance to his personal approach, inspired by the principles of independent cinema even when the director had the opportunity to work on more traditional productions. From his first low-budget films, influenced directly by the New York scene populated by immigrants, artists, musicians, students and drug addicts, through his universally recognized masterpieces – The King of New York (1990), Bad Lieutenant (1992) and Body Snatchers (1994) – to his most recent works, increasingly introspective and autobiographical, Ferrara has brought to life a personal and exclusive universe.

  • 'See It Big!' Series Celebrates Movie Musicals
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ‘SEE IT BIG!’ SERIES CELEBRATES MOVIE MUSICALS Fourteen spectacular singing/dancing extravaganzas including All That Jazz, The Sound of Music, Pennies from Heaven, The Wiz, and more January 24–February 28, 2014 Astoria, New York, January 2, 2014—The Museum of the Moving Image’s popular series See It Big! will turn its focus to the movie musical with a fourteen-film celebration of the genre, from January 24 through February 28, 2014. Musicals are, by their very nature, filled with spectacle. They are heightened forms of storytelling, in which the narrative is amplified by song and dance, where characters express their innermost feelings in the most extravagant ways imaginable. It is a genre that celebrates excess and stylization, and the best examples of the form can only be truly enjoyed… big! Among the titles are two of the first films produced at the rejuvenated Astoria studio— across the street from the Museum—in the 1970s: Series opener All That Jazz (1979) is choreographer and director Bob Fosse’s largely autobiographical tour de force featuring a lithe and passionate Roy Scheider as Fosse’s alter ego (January 24); The Wiz (1978), directed by Sidney Lumet, reimagines The Wizard of Oz in a gritty urban fantasy land and stars Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and Nipsey Russell (February 7). Production materials from The Wiz are currently on view at the Museum in Lights, Camera, Astoria!, an exhibition exploring the history of the Astoria studio (on view through February 9), and also in the core exhibition Behind the Screen. Two other 1970s musicals also feature in the series.
