Interview Noel Fielding: 'Everything Salvador Dalí did was funny' Stuart Jeffries The comedian stars as one of his heroes, goth-rocker Alice Cooper, in Sky’s latest Urban Myths romp – so why did he pitch to play its other lead character, the clown prince of surrealism? Wed 2 May 2018 12.17 BST oel Fielding was born, or so you’d think, to play Alice Cooper. The eyeliner, the dangling black locks, the camped-up goth vibe, the way the comedian and Bake Off host dresses more outlandishly than anyone in any room, with the possible N exception of Prue Leith. Cooper has long been one of Fielding’s heroes. His parents were fans and inducted their son into the rock musician’s oeuvre, perhaps even instilling into little Noel the subversive philosophy of Cooper’s School’s Out. “I love his music. He was a punk before punk.” The Adventures of Alice and Noel, from the Guardian’s Guide, 2012. Illustration: Noel Fielding And then one day, Cooper appeared as a guest on the pop quiz show Never Mind the Buzzcocks, on which Fielding was a team captain. Their relationship blossomed. “He invited me to his show and then I did a cartoon strip about him in the Guardian.” He also interviewed his hero for the paper. So when Fielding went to audition for a role in a new drama for Sky Arts’ Urban Myths series about the time the glam rocker met the venerable shock artist Salvador Dalí, Fielding was a shoo-in to play Cooper. But he had other ideas.

The classic example is at a social gathering or Sayingyg sorry y networking event . If you try to infi ltrate a group by saying, “sorry to interrupt” , the fi rst thing you have told people is that you are apologetic and interrupting . Likewise, people responding to emails with “sorry for the delay in getting back to you” are highlighting the fact there was a delay. Instead, start by thanking the person for allowing you the time to come back to them. In terms of saying sorry when you have something to apologise for, it is better to do it succinctly . You can tell a sincere apology by the fact that it is short and to the point. Qualifying an apology generally means the apologiser does not fully mean it. Preferably, the apology should be face to face ; if that is not possible, then do it over the phone. If you have really annoyed someone and done the initial apology face-to-face or over the phone, it is fi ne to follow up with something more expansive in writing.

Triumph of The women? The Female Face of Right-wing Populism and Extremism 02 Case study on the United Kingdom and Brexit Juliane Itta & Nicole Katsioulis 01 Triumph of the women? The study series All over the world, right-wing populist parties continue to grow stronger, as has been the case for a number of years – a development that is male-dominated in most countries, with right-wing populists principally elected by men. However, a new generation of women is also active in right-wing populist parties and movements – forming the female face of right-wing populism, so to speak. At the same time, these parties are rapidly closing the gap when it comes to support from female voters – a new phenomenon, for it was long believed that women tend to be rather immune to right-wing political propositions. Which gender and family policies underpin this and which societal trends play a part? Is it possible that women are coming out triumphant here? That is a question that we already raised, admittedly playing devil’s advocate, in the first volume of the publication, published in 2018 by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Triumph of the women? The Female Face of the Far Right in Europe. We are now continuing this first volume with a series of detailed studies published at irregular intervals. This is partly in response to the enormous interest that this collection of research has aroused to date in the general public and in professional circles. As a foundation with roots in social democracy, from the outset one of our crucial concerns has been to monitor anti-democratic tendencies and developments, while also providing information about these, with a view to strengthening an open and democratic society thanks to these insights.

The US rapper delighted many core fans with a 100-minute set on the Pyramid Stage that included big hits and new material, but did little to win over those festival-goers who came along out of curiosity. Wearing blue denim with a white splat- tered paint effect, West spent most of the set alone on a bare stage under a ceiling of hundreds of powerful spot lights, although he took a trip above the stage in a crane for “Touch the Sky”. “Thank you all for coming out tonight, thank you for coming to see me,” he said in a rare moment of engage- ment with the crowd. West’s performance opened with “Stronger” and closed with “Gold Digger”, and included a guest appearance by Justin Vernon of folk band Bon Iver, who lurked in the shadows on the edge of the stage as the rapper strode around. At one point, West sang part of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”-a bold move before declar- ing: “You are watching the greatest living rock star on the planet!” The decision to give West the coveted Saturday night Kanye West performs on The Pyramid Stage at the Glastonbury Festival, at Worthy Farm in Somerset, England, Saturday.—AP photos slot caused controversy among fans of the festival, which is better known for its rock and folk music, and 135,000 peo- ple signed a petition to get him dropped.

Home Festival History News Pre-Festival Stuff Festival Time Newbie? Witterings Links Site Map News Snippets - August 2008 to August 2009 2007-2008 | 2006-2007 Fringe 2009 ticket sales and other statistics posted September 1st, 2009. Initial statistics have been put out by the Fringe Society for the 2009 festival. They are summarised in The Guardian and The Scotsman. The headline figure is a new record of 1.85m tickets sold. This beats the previous record of 1.7m in 2007 by 9%. Other stats include: 18,901 performers in 34,265 performances of 2,098 shows; comedy made up 35% of the overall programme, theatre 28% and music 16%. While there is no breakdown of audience figures so far the feedback from some venues appears to indicate that increases in attendances at comedy shows may well be attributable to the Scots. As previously stated, despite apprehension in various quarters buoyant ticket sales are not totally unexpected this year. 2010 and 2011 will be more problematic years as the effects of the recession impact on employment numbers. Comedy is least likely to be affected as its audience tends to be younger and is more likely to have the necessary disposable income. Fringe venues complain about costs posted August 30th, 2009. The Scotsman reported that Fringe chief, Kath Mainland, is to meet venue chiefs who are concerned about rising costs and the future viability of medium-sized venues. More on the expense of putting on shows at the festival posted August 30th, 2009. This time it is Tommy Sheppard, director of The Stand Comedy Club, writing in The Scotsman on the difficulties faced by comedians.
