He easily defeated the , who was brainwashed by the and injected with a Giant-Man serum. Thor later battles his son, Modi, who has tried to conquer the United States with the help of Hydra. Thor is forced to kill Modi, and is left to mourn his son, as well as rue his own failures as a father. Bruce Banner tracks Thor down and transforms into the Hulk, leading to a rematch between the two. Thor is defeated and imprisoned, but is later freed alongside the rest of his teammates. Iron Man also creates a new hammer and suit of armor for Thor by using Reed's future technology. When the Earth version of Galactus attacks the Ultimate Earth, Thor is among those to challenge the entity. During the final battle, Thor sacrifices himself in order to drive Galactus into the Negative Zone , trapping them both. After the destruction of both the Earth and Ultimate universes, Thor is among those rescued by God Doom and transported to Battleworld. Now known as Thunderer Thorlief nicknamed "Ultimate Thor" , he begins investigating the murderers of various men and women who all turn out to be alternate universe versions of Donald Blake and Jane Foster. Ultimate Thor discovers that the murders were committed by Rune Thor, who had been tasked by God Doom with eliminating the various versions of Donald and Jane in order to keep the Thor Corps from remembering that the Multiverse once existed before Battleworld. Ultimate Thor and the other members of the Thor Corps storm Doom's castle, where they are all killed. After his death, Ultimate Thor's hammer is shown to have landed on the Earth version of . Sometime later, the hammer is shown to be on a mysterious space ship, in front of an imprisoned Thor Odinson. Currently, the Collector is being challenged for possession of this hammer by Thanos ' Black Order , as well as a team-up of Odinson, Toothgnasher one of his magical goats , "Thori" a Hellhound previously owned by , and Beta Ray Bill. Although able to channel its power when in proximity, Odinson chooses not to claim the hammer, but he and Bill use the power of the hammer to return Asgard to its rightful place while decimating the Collector's forces. This hammer is subsequently claimed by Volstagg , after he witnesses the brutal demise of several children in a conflict with Cindr's forces. This transforms Volstagg into the War Thor. This hammer is also seen in one alternate future wielded by synthezoid Victor Mancha. Thor possesses immense superhuman strength, stamina, and durability. At the beginning of the series, his physical were entirely dependent on his belt because he had no access to his divine powers. After being restored by , however, it is unclear if the belt boosts his powers or, in fact, serves any purpose at all. Thor possesses the ability to control the weather on a large scale. He is capable of summoning thunderstorms and controlling massive amounts of lightning. He can teleport across space and between dimensions. It is unknown to what extent he relies on his weapons for these abilities. It is also unknown if Thor can control other types of weather. Both variations of his hammer are capable of these powers. Thor possesses some skill at combat. He is depicted with an armory of weapons ranging from different types of hammers to swords and daggers. But, in the Ultimate Thor miniseries it is revealed that the hammer resembling the Earth version was his weapon when he was a god, and was lost during . When he is reincarnated as Thorleif Golmen, he is given tech-based armour and a portable power supply that gives him his superhuman powers, which is turned into the recognisable axe-hammer from The . Starting in The Ultimates 3 , Thor no longer wears the belt or uses the axe- hammer, and instead uses the "true" Mjolnir. When the Children of Tomorrow drain the Odinforce and exterminate the Asgardian race, Thor is stripped of his godly powers and gives his square hammer to his son Modi before pushing him into the World Tree. From then, he uses the belt and axe-hammer he wielded before, now more powerful due to advancements made by Tony Stark. Even after Thor's 'death' after the Incursions, his hammer survived the destruction of the multiverse and landed on Asgard. When the currently-unworthy Odinson of Earth came in close proximity of it, he experienced brief flashes of Ultimate Thor's life, even sensing that the hammer was in some way searching for its true master, and was able to channel the hammer's control of the lightning despite not being its master or worthy of his own hammer at this point. So, I've stuck with newer releases that are supposed to be newbie-friendly, like Journey into Mystery and The Mighty Thor. But, once I started, I was hooked. I particularly like the Thor comics, mainly because I love Loki. He's my favorite villain of myth, and now comics. While browsing, Ultimate Thor popped up as a recommendation. I was hesitant at first because it appeared to be another reimaging of his origin. And it is. But, it is als I've only started reading Marvel comics in the past year. But, it is also a jumping off point for a new take on the hero. The book switches between three time lines: The Present, and Asgard of various eons or ages ago. In the present, Thor appears to be in a sanitarium. They have been experimenting with something designed specifically for him but now suspect he may be crazy because he thinks he's the reincarnated Thor! In , we follow the masked Zemo as he finds the Norn stones and prepares to invade Asgard with the help of a Nazi and Frost Giant army. And, eons ago we see the three sons of Odin fighting an endless war against Jotunheim; but, it will soon end and change everything. First, I love that in this world, Loki is actually Odin's son and not adopted. It presents so many opportunities to not only reimagine the tale, but to provide explanation for his and others' actions. I mean, why would Odin put up with him for so long when he favored his real sons anyway? Here, he is a real son and it makes sense why he wouldn't give up on his child. It also provides a possible motive for Loki's treachery - a spurned mother. Zeno's army presumably achieves Ragnarok, causing the reincarnation of Thor and - as men. But, we cannot have Thor without his lightning, and the remedy for that is clever and full of possibilities. Overall, I loved this Ultimate Thor, but am left unsure how to proceed. I want more of the story but since the various character often intertwine, I do not know what book to go to next Aug 20, Aarthika rated it it was amazing Shelves: -comics , comics-graphicnovels-manga. The reveal in the book was unexpected. Overall this was pretty impressive and was yet another Thor comic I finally actually enjoyed. I liked the art in this too and how it wasn't very dialogue heavy as most Thor comics are. Oct 05, Martin rated it really liked it Shelves: reviewed. This one was quite good, a 4-parter that seamlessly integrates 3 separate, yet interlinked storylines. Jonathan Hickman pulls it off nicely, as we see Thor "Ages Ago", in a war with the Frost Giants, in , as he and the rest of Asgard are besieged by those same Frost Giants and nazis led by Baron Zemo whose secret identity I did NOT see coming , and then in "present day" in the short period leading up to his joining the Ultimates in Mark Millar's first arc of that title. I especially liked ho This one was quite good, a 4-parter that seamlessly integrates 3 separate, yet interlinked storylines. I especially liked how ingenious it was of Loki to plan his escape from "the room with no doors". Very, very clever. Having read the entirety of Millar's original run, I also liked how this book manages to put things in a new light and has me re-assess my impressions of Thor and his supposed mental problems. Bottom line, it's a solid origin story that dovetails nicely with events that long-time readers of the Ultimates are more than familiar with. Mar 12, Abdullah Ali rated it liked it. I'm always down for Hickman's writing no matter what. The way he tells stories and his imagination just blows my mind and has never disappointed. His take on Thor here is so strange, bizarre, oddly unique and takes everything in a completely different direction. His treatment of some of the characters, in design and all, as well as general themes you're used to in Thor comics can be very off putting here, but when you think about it har I'm always down for Hickman's writing no matter what. His treatment of some of the characters, in design and all, as well as general themes you're used to in Thor comics can be very off putting here, but when you think about it hard, it's actually super interesting. The artwork is fantastic. The issue I had with this was how this short 4 issue story was not a contained narrative for Thor, rather it was a miniscule part to play in the grand scheme of Ultimate comics and primarily The Ultimates. It was basically all set up and establishment to place Thor prominently with a reason in this alternate universe. It's told in a way that relies on you having some background knowledge on the Norse god and Mythology before reading, because I couldn't help but try to think how someone who knows nothing about Thor would feel like when reading this. I'd think they'd be pretty confused and feel taken back. I'm super interested in the Ultimate universe, so definitely going to be reading more and see how it all fits in together. Maybe then I'll appreciate this one more. I never really got into the Ultimate line of comics from Marvel. I can't say that i have ever been a big fan of rebooting something that has been around for multiple decades especially to the extant that the Ultimate lines did. Thor is part of the European super soldier program their equivalent at least. They hit a problem when the man they picked starts saying he is actually Thor reborn as a human. They bring in the reknown, but mysterious, Dr. His studies show that Thor is actua I never really got into the Ultimate line of comics from Marvel. His studies show that Thor is actually remembering. He also reveals a few of his own secrets. Deciding to go ahead with the project, the scientists develop special gear which gives Thor some extra powers. One of these devices is a large hammer. This Thor is very eco-friendly he would have been called hippie or tree hugger in less PC times. But he might have to put saving the planet on hold, when Loki makes a reappearance. Overall, this was an interesting approach to Thor. I still think I favor the Thor that is based a little more on mythology not that Marvel worried too much about accuracy to those tales when they first developed Thor either. Still worth a read especially if you can find it on sale like I did. Dec 07, Mike rated it liked it Shelves: completed-series. This is one of several Marvel Ultimate limited series featuring Ultimate origins. We see Thor's backstory at three pivotal junctures; the hidden pieces of the plot slowly fit together to reveal Thor's decision to engage The Hulk in NYC as previously seen in The Ultimates. This is good storytelling, weaving the threads we know into the tapestry until the final picture develops. The art is good, and the battles, but it never quite forms up into a great story. I have no context for the Ultimates universe so I might have missed things, but I thought this was an interesting retelling of Thor's origin and Asgard's history. The art is great, but the jumping timeline was at times jarring and confusing. More than once I had to flip back a page or two to reorient myself. The whole Nazi Ragnarok plot was a bit bizarre. I did enjoy some of the bits that hearken back to lore from older Thor comics. Loki's backstory is different in this one, and I am curious to know more about his mother, who we briefly see. I remember actually purchasing many of the titles and issues from the "Ultimate" recrafting back when they were originally released. At the time, I was not a big fan of Thor and basically passed on this short-run. Decided to give it a go recently and glad I did. Excellent story and great artwork! After Iron Man rescued Thor, he provided Odinson with an upgraded version of his Super-Soldier armor, with which Thor teleported to the Dome in search of vengeance. There, he rescued Captain Britain, but was defeated by the Children, and the Maker showed himself as Reed Richards, with the condition of deliver that message. Also, a new ability emerged to Thor, being the last Asgardian alive, he apparently "became" Valhalla, being able to see the ghost of the dead Asgardians, such as Odin, Loki, and others, who apparently also acts as his awareness, helping him. However, before they can finish this S. Thor and Stark fight them off and decide to take the fight to Richards and set off to speak with the President to form a plan of attack. Along the way Thor drops Stark off with Susan Storm to have her exam his tumor and also recruit her for the final assault against the Children of Tomorrow. Before they can begin their procedures Stark's brain tumor, Anthony, makes friends with the City and turns the children against Richards. At this point Reed injects the Hulk with Pym's giant man serum and sets him loose on the city. Susan Storm appears before the Hulk and blinds him with her powers and a helmet she was wearing. Thor then comes from out of the skies and knocks Hulk out cold. The aftermath of this battle shows Richards captured by Susan and Hulk turned over to S. Thor is seen mourning in Asgard, where he gets a phone-call from Tony, who asks him for help in unifying a fractured America. Later, he helps taking back Texas by taking out heavy armor. It is in that mission that he sees Asgardian gold being used by the short-lived republic's leaders. Hydra , led by Modi , Thor's lost son, attacked Project Pegasus in Wyoming as the ultimate objective to destroy America and create a new Asgard from its ashes. Along numerous allies and S. Thor later joined the Ultimates' ally in the search of mysterious powerful gems similar to the one found in Modi's scepter. During a meeting, in which Invisible Woman informed S. The Ultimates barely escaped, but Captain America decided to be left behind in order to stop the villains, although he was defeated. While Reed was remolding the world to his shape and the Ultimates struggled to face the Dark Ultimates, Thor faced the Hulk, but was defeated and imprisoned in the Negative Zone along with Captain America and Hawkeye. Tron in order to use it to free the captive Ultimates from the Negative Zone. The Ultimates finally confronted an out-numbered Reed along with the Howling Commandos , but the Maker's cavalry arrived in the form of Kang wielding the final gem, who also revealed herself as being the Sue Storm from a near future. During a furious battle against Reed Richards and his Ultimates, Tony managed to build Thor a new and more powerful suit and Mjolnir using The Maker's technology. When he was about to face Richards, an immense flux of energy echoed through time and space and the Gems were destroyed. Kang stated that what she tried to prevent just happened, and she left stating she would try to go back further in time. Unknown to them, the flux of energy had brought a powerful being known as Galactus from another universe to this one, and it started approaching Earth. However, Thor had to join Galactus in his exile as he had to push the cosmic entity into the portal. When the Multiverse was destroyed and recreated in the form of Battleworld , so was Thor, but with a new name: Thunderer Thorlief. In some point in time, he joined the Thor Corps , and became known as the Ultimate Thor for the arrest of thirteen in one night, and having solved the "Mangog murders. His most recent case was the homicide of five different women in different domains, who were revealed all to be different versions of the same person. Stormbreaker Ray was fatally injured in the Kingdom of Manhattan by an unknown enemy right after getting a tip on the identity of the woman from Loki, but he managed to tell her name to Thorlief in his death bed: Jane Foster. After mourning for their fallen brother, the Thor Corps proceeded to comb through Battleworld for any suspects, any person capable of killing a Thor. Ultimate Thor investigated a Jane Foster from the Kingdom of Manhattan, and found her possessions had been taken by an ex-member of the Thor Corps known as Thor the Unworthy. Ultimate Thor was unable to get information from Thor the Unworthy as he was called by his brother after finding a new victim, a hammer salesman named Donald Blake. Before the investigation could begin, Ultimate Thor pinned down Loki , who was found roaming the crime scene. Loki stated he has simply moved the bodies so they could be left for the Thor Corps to find. Ultimate Thor later followed Loki's directions to the place where a mass grave for Jane Fosters and Donald Blakes was found, the Deadlands. When he was investigating the corpses, Thorlief was struck from behind by the Rune Thor , one of his least amicable peers, who admitted to have killed Beta Ray while he left Thorlief beaten at the mercy of the zombies of the Deadlands. However, he was unexpectedly saved by Thor the Unworthy. The two of them rushed back to Doomgard in order to stop the villainous , who were about to get rid of Loki. It was revealed the Rune Thor had murdered the Jane Fosters and Donald Blakes for the sake of Doctor Doom's doctrine, possibly because most Jane Fosters and Donald Blakes from alternate universes were closely tied to their respective Thors. A furious battle took place in the halls of Doomgard, at the same time the Jane Foster of the universe previous to Battleworld was rallying her fellow Thors against God Emperor Doom's lies. The Rune and the Destroyer Thors were defeated, and Thorlief, along with the Thor Corps proceeded to raid Doom's Castle, seemingly perishing in the process. After the restoration of the Multiverse, Thor's hammer appeared in Earth and crashed into Asgard. Thor possesses a variety of superhuman attributes. As a result of Loki's manipulation of reality, it seemed that Thor received his powers from his equipment, mainly his belt, and were not his own. Thor is considered one of the strongest beings in the Ultimate Universe and has been called the most powerful superhuman on the planet on different occasions and even by Nick Fury himself. Thor is a capable fighter, and appears to have a better than average knowledge of world politics. While the exact amount of weight he can lift isn't known, Thor can easily lift far in excess of a tons; however, it should be noted that as high as his strength may be, it is nowhere near to the superior level of strength his counterpart from the has demonstrated; for example, he was overpowered by his mainstream counterpart during their fight. Thor's powers come to some degree from his equipment. Unlike his mainstream counterpart, if his belt is removed, he would be unable to use Mjolnir and loses all of his superhuman abilities, although this could be a reference to the original Norse Mythology where Thor required a magical belt to lift Mjolnir. Ultimate Comics Thor by Jonathan Hickman In Ultimate Six , Thor appears with the Ultimates while bringing in Kraven the Hunter , although he refuses Captain America's requests to catch Kraven or bring him back. He is seen aiding in reconstruction efforts in Bosnia when summoned following the Six's breakout. Thor is the one who defeats Electro during the climactic battle at the White House. As he is idolized by Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm, he fraternizes with them to the point of ordering to prepare a keg of beer for after the battle. Thor has appeared or been mentioned in several storylines of the Ultimate Fantastic Four. Reed Richards at one point created infant hard light versions of the Ultimates and thought Thor to be the most powerful superhuman on the planet. This was proved wrong when Namor appeared to be physically stronger. In another storyline an interdimensional parasite that sought out the most powerful being on the planet bypassed a present Thor and possessed Doctor Doom. This is attributed to a combination of Doom's physical states and knowledge of Atlantean magic. Thor appeared as a minor character in an alternate timeline as the President of the United States due to time travel involving invaders. Thor appeared in a later storyline involving Thanos. He stated he had fought Thanos in the past and tried to fight him again along with the rest of the Ultimates. He was quickly defeated due to Thanos possessing the Cosmic Cube and turned into a tree. This was undone when Thanos was defeated by the Fantastic Four. In Ultimates 2 Thor has resigned from the Ultimates due to his belief that the team has become a tool for American foreign policy. Volstagg is then erased from reality making it look like Thor is delusional. After Bruce Banner's identity of the Hulk is leaked to the public, Captain America accuses Thor of the act, but Thor denies the charge and tries to warn Captain America of Loki's influence, but his warnings are rejected as are his claims to be Thor. An anti-super-soldier demonstration in Italy turns violent due to Loki's interference. When Thor intervenes on behalf of the protesters, the incident is used as an excuse for the Ultimates to team with the European Defence Initiative's super-soldiers to arrest him. The EDI's head scientist, Gunnar Golmen, reveals that Thor's powers are technological in nature, coming from his belt and hammer. Gunnar explains that Thor is really his own mentally troubled brother who stole the equipment and has been being acting as Thor, God of Thunder , ever since. Gunnar claims the equipment gives Thor physical strength and powers beyond anyone else on the planet, and that he is too dangerous to take on alone. Thor is tracked to Norway. After he fails to convince the Ultimates that Gunnar is really a masquerading Loki manipulating reality, a battle ensues. Despite initially holding his own, Thor is eventually overwhelmed and has to call upon a storm. At the last moment, Quicksilver is able to remove his belt stripping Thor of his powers and his ability to use Mjolnir. Thor is then locked up in the Triskelion all the time being mocked by Loki, who is invisible to all but him and attempts to convince him that he is insane. Thor is imprisoned in the Triskelion until the last issue of the series, where his attempts to warn the Ultimates about the coming dangers are ignored. Following the Liberators' conquest of America, Thor is freed by Odin this is helped by Witch using her hex power to effect the probability of Thor regaining his power and restored to full power in time to battle a revealed Loki. At first Loki has the upper hand by using his powers over reality to become immune to Thor's hammer and overpowering the thunder god while summoning an army of Asgardian monsters to kill the Ultimates. After an army of Asgardian warriors arrive to fight the monsters, Loki's powers stop working for unknown reasons. During the battle Loki reveals he is responsible for creating the idea of a Norwegian super-soldier program and framing Captain America. Thor is able to destroy Loki's mortal form and send his spirit back to Odin for punishment. Now vindicated in his claims of godhood, Thor learns that the Ultimates will no longer be working for the government, and rejoins the team. After the battle Thor used his hammer to teleport the Helicarrier with the team to the Supremeverse. There he engages in combat, but is defeated by the former's superior speed. In 7 Thor gains the upper hand against Hyperion , felling him with a huge bolt of lightning then severely beating him with Mjolnir. He also knocks back Zarda as she attempts to stop him from beating Hyperion. In Ultimates 3 Thor undergoes many changes making him closer to his mainstream counterpart. He is redesigned with a beard and a bulkier build. He becomes much more eager for battle and more vengeful. He has formed a romantic relationship with , who has mysteriously gained superhuman powers. He starts speaking in a Shakespearean pattern, claiming it is the way he truly speaks and with his godhood no longer in doubt feels he no longer has to hide it. During the course of the story he reveals he has a collection of weapons which were a gift from Odin forged by Ulik the troll. During the course of the story Thor aids the team when the Brotherhood of Mutants attacks their mansion. He later travels to the with the Ultimates to confront . He once again battles Magneto, but is quickly defeated and buried near the center of the Earth. After the true mastermind behind the events is revealed, Thor attempts to confront Magneto again, but Magneto uses his powers to take Thor's hammer from him and then leaves. Following this, Thor begins using a sword. Donald Blake also appeared in the first issue of the series as the doctor who attempted to revive the Scarlet Witch after she was shot. Blake was never seen again in the series; however he later would appear in Ultimate Thor where he is revealed to be Balder, Thor and Loki's brother and Odin's eyes and ears, revived in human form after being murdered by Loki. As mentioned, Magneto uses Thor's hammer to create worldwide destruction. During these events Thor, upon finding Valkyrie's lifeless body, enters Valhalla to reclaim her soul. He is then confronted by , who forces Thor to battle Hela's army of fallen warriors to reach Valkyrie. Captain America suddenly appears in Valhalla, implying that he has died. In Valhalla, Thor sacrifices himself to save Valkyrie and Captain America from Hela and this allows them to go back to live. In New Ultimates 1 he is shown still imprisoned, demanding Hela returns him to Earth and to Valkyrie. She tells him she will give him whatever his heart desires in exchange for a son. The next issue has a vision shown to Valkyrie by Amora where he is making love with Hela as he had no other choice. Later Hela tells him that another soul is still needed for him to leave, Thor says it will be hers but finds himself unable to kill her because she is already pregnant. At the end of the issue he is resurrected at the price of the death of Valkyrie. Thor then goes into a rage searching for his brother and attacking the Ultimates in the process until he finally finds him and gets his hammer back with the Ultimates watching as he is still extremely angry. Thor remained in the Ultimates when they were employed by Carol Danvers and battled Nick Fury's black-ops team codenamed the . At this point, Thor was back in a relationship with Jane Foster and shared an apartment with her and began to talk like a "normal person" again when Tony Stark promised to donate money to charity if Thor gave up his Asgardian "faux-Shakespearean" speech-pattern. In the final battle during the revolution in North Korea organised by Gregory Stark, Thor and the Ultimates battled Gregory, whose superpowered suit made him too powerful to defeat until Iron Man disabled it with an electromagnetic pulse, giving Thor the opportunity to kill Gregory on the spot with a lightning bolt. Thor's return and rejoining into the Ultimates was confirmed in the pages of Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man , where he is seen as one of the Ultimates. Director Danvers asks his advice, and one of the Ultimates who will teach Spider-Man to be a hero. He is later shown attending Peter Parker's funeral, where he reflects that he has also seen Peter dining in Valhalla with the deceased X-Men and Ultimates members. Odin foresees that Asgard will soon fall and chooses Thor to champion the ways of Asgard after that event. The hammer Mjolnir is crafted to contain the power of Asgard, and Thor is the only one who is able to wield the weapon. Loki uses the stones to return to Asgard, armed with an army of Frost Giants and Nazi soldiers. While Asgard dematerializes, Thor delivers one last powerful blow against the invaders. His powers are shown to be a function of the program, designed by the E. Psychiatrist Dr. Donald Blake is later revealed to be the reborn Balder and tells the scientists that his examination suggests that Thor is who he says he is. Balder tells Thor that, despite Ragnarok destroying Asgard, the Gods live on in the hearts of mortals and are yet to be reawakened. This, in addition to the financial costs that went into the super soldier program, convinces the scientists to complete the work that turns Thor into a super soldier. He is given a suit designed to heighten his strength significantly, leaving him practically unbeatable, along with being equipped with a weather-manipulation device which allows him to control weather and teleport across space. When the scientist face difficulty in handling the size of the machine, Thor tells them to make it the head of his new ax-hammer. Once allowed into the open, Thor works on a number of humanitarian projects, and rejects offers from General Nick Fury to join the Ultimates. Balder convinces Thor to take up his responsibility as a hero as Thor joins the Ultimates in subduing the Hulk. Despite his pacifist ideals, Thor promises to "bring the Thunder" against "men who make war". Reed Richards returned to Earth and founded an organization called Children of Tomorrow, a group of evolved humans with the aim of dominating the world, building their base called the Dome. The Dome's interior ages at an accelerated rate compared to the outside world. Over years have passed inside the Dome, so their inhabitants evolved themselves to perfect super-humans. The heroes were subdued by the enemies and some of them were killed, draining their powers. After examining Thor, Richards, now called the Maker, sent the Children for the source of power of Thor, leading them to Asgard. After killing every Asgardian God, the Children drained the power of Yggdrasil, leaving Thor powerless. SO if you read Ultimates you're kind of like "Oh we know how Thor became who he is" but really you don't. Was he really a god? This book answers that. We also see the betrayal of Loki and the fall of Asgard. While nothing groundbreaking it was nice to see how it all came together and can see the differences with this Thor and the thor. Overall a solid little origin story with good art. Nothing mindblowing but a easy 3 out of 5. Sep 25, Jesse A rated it liked it Shelves: graphic-novels. I'm a huge Thor fan and a huge Hickman fan so this is a slam dunk, right? Well yes and no. The story felt a bit short and under developed. The art was good just didn't have enough time with this one. Within those four issues, Hickman brings Ragnarok, an essential story for any writer worth his Norse runes, and kills off the gods, only to reincarnate them into mortal flesh. Thor is the key character in their revival and this responsibility makes him appear unhinged to everyone. This explains the time he spent mental care as mentioned in The Ultimates. He is remembering everything and this is instrumental in repowering him now that he is now part of the mortal plane. Hickman finds a new role for the Donald Blake persona and his Loki is a character steeped in tragedy. He is torn between his birth mother and his step father and his vow to repair his relationship with a parent proved to be his undoing. These four issues are not enough. Hickman has enough material here for an ongoing series. In fact, I believe, some of these concepts can be repurposed for use in the regular Marvel Universe. Still, Hickman made the most out of what is essentially a flashback story. Update: I'm looking to upgrade to a hardcover copy, thus, this one shall be culled. There are three parallel storylines here: events in Asgard eons ago, a Nazi invasion of Asgard lead by Baron Zemo, and modern day, with the current incarnation of Thor. I'll be honest, I liked that the character designs seemed to be synched to the movie version of Thor, because that's basically all I know of the character. Jonathan Hickman returns to the Ultimates Universe Mark Millar started to fill in some of the gaps in Thor's involvement with the group and how he came by his new outfit and hammer. I read Millar's Ultimates run and though I wondered about Thor's barely mentioned backstory I didn't feel it affected the larger storyline. This book is really for fans who have to know everything about the characters for whom those questions of Thor's Ultimates background have to be answered. But it's also a pretty Jonathan Hickman returns to the Ultimates Universe Mark Millar started to fill in some of the gaps in Thor's involvement with the group and how he came by his new outfit and hammer. But it's also a pretty fun read as well. The book shows life in Asgard in the good ol' days between the brothers Balder, Loki and Thor, their war with the Ice Giants from Jotunheim, how Loki went on to betray Odin and Asgard, and the storm that destroyed the World Tree - Ragnarok. It's framed with Thor being held by European scientists as they try and figure out if he's a madman or he really is the God of Thunder, and then by the end of the book Nick Fury's shown up and the pieces of the puzzle all slide together. Hickman does a fine job of showing Thor's bravery and character through the various events as well as show Loki for the villain he is. Asgard feels a bit Roman but there're no real criticisms against this book. It's well written, well drawn, and is a fun read. If you're a fan of the Ultimates or are thinking of reading that series, include this book as a prelude to those books which will ensure a richer reading experience. View 1 comment. Jonathan Hickman gets on the Ultimates wagon, but as ever for me fails to release the potential that his story telling initially displays for me. Aug 10, Mike rated it really liked it. Great origin story for UThor, with some pathos, originality and a few clever nods to classic Thor mythos. Great book that ends where we all began with UThor. For the record, I'm happy that Hickman re-emphasized exactly what kind of being UThor is. Jul 21, Ashe Catlin rated it liked it. It does set something up in the Ultimates, even though it was a brief one and done moment. I did read a couple of Ultimates stories so far, and now, having read this, it makes a LOT more sense. I really like what Hickman has done here In this universe, Thor is thought to be insane when he keeps saying he is the Norse God of Thunder. In fact, the European Super Soldier program led by the father of Benjamin Braddock - Captain Britain brings in a specialist to take the case of his sanity: Dr. Donald Blake. So if Thor and Blake are not the same man in this universe Who is Blake? Which one is sane? Eventually, Thor is given a chance to join the Ultimates after Dr. Braddock and his son, in consultation with Dr. Blake, decide that too much has gone into the program to scrap it now by Nick Fury. He seems to spurn the offer, and does good work for humanity but leaves the Ultimates to their own business until he and Dr. Blake see the handiwork of a figure thought lost in the mystical past. The final panels are great, showing the Ultimates taken down, and Fury readying a nuclear response, leading to the last panel of the book, with Thor appearing alongside the lightning, striking just like it does. I love that panel. I really love how the story nods to the original Thor yet updates it to the Ultimate version. It respects where it came from but tweaks just enough to be different. I really like that to some degree, Hickman kept things from being too 'big picture' like he sometimes does. Blake turns out to be a reincarnated Balder, who was slain by Loki. It is Balder's guidance that helps Thor to realize he too is reincarnated as a human. Loki turns out to have been posing as this universe's Baron Zemo, however he is not reincarnated like his brothers The rampage that took out the Ultimates was the Hulk; and the last panel shows Thor literally bringing the hammer down on Hulk and stopping him when no one else could. Having read the entirety of Millar's original run, I also liked how this book manages to put things in a new light and has me re-assess my impressions of Thor and his supposed mental problems. It was Thorlief himself who suggested nestling it inside a Hammer, which fit nicely into the Norse iconography the suit now had. Eventually remembering everything, Thor stole the harness and hammer, vowing to use them for the protection of Midgard. When General Nick Fury contacted him about joining the Ultimates , Thor refused to work for the military-industrial complex that he detested. When the Hulk appeared in Manhattan , Thor refused to assist unless the President doubled the foreign aid budget. Not long after the Ultimates confronted the Hulk, the President relented and Thor appeared in time to save Captain America from Banner. Following the battle, Thor became good friends with Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, pledging his support whenever lives were in danger. Soon thereafter, Thor was briefed on the and sent to investigate a suspected Chitauri base in Micronesia. Finding the base abandoned and about to explode, they were saved by Iron Man's force field. Once a Chitauri fleet appeared in Arizona , Thor brought the survivors there, and alongside Iron Man provided air support against the Chitauri spacecraft until the Air Force arrived. Iron Man asked Thor to help him dispose of the Chitauri bomb that would obliterate the entire solar system, so Thor teleported it to the wastes of Nastrond, where its detonation caused only a small ripple in our space-time. When Magneto attacked the Ultimates Thor threw Mjolnir at the Master of Magnetism, but Magneto managed to stop it an inch from his helmet and threw it back at Thor, sending him through a wall. Thor joined the Ultimates in attacking the X-Men later on, he defeated Storm , but was overpowered by Colossus. Thor was with the Ultimates when they brought in Kraven the Hunter, although he refused Captain America's requests to catch Kraven or bring him back. He aided in reconstruction efforts in Bosnia when summoned following the Six's breakout. Thor defeated Electro during the climactic battle at the White House. As he was idolized by Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm, he fraternized with them to the point of ordering Carol Danvers to prepare a Keg of Beer for after the battle. Thor was discovered talking to an Asgardian only he could see, and resigned from the Ultimates, protesting its likely involvement in foreign affairs, and the team's assumption that it was he who outed Banner as the Hulk. When an Italian demonstration against the European Defense Initiative's super-soldier program turned violent, Thor intervened. The Ultimates learned from the EDI's head scientist, Gunnar Golmen Thorlief's brother that the Norwegian government had chosen the Norse God of Thunder, Thor, as their national image and modeled a super soldier after him. They created a power-belt in the image of Thor's that granted the wearer unbelievable strength, durability and the power of flight. Their biggest success was the electric power battery in the form of Thor's hammer Mjolnir, which could ionize the environment, control the weather and allow the user to teleport. Summarizing the earlier events surrounding Thor's "delusions", Gunnar alleged that Thor had stolen the technology that had given him his powers, and the Ultimates tracked him to Norway to take him into custody. Thor attempted to tell his former teammates that Gunnar was actually Loki, but the Ultimates and the EUI soldiers attacked him anyway believing him to be delusional. He shrugged off all their attacks, although his hair was burned off, but ultimately lost his ability to fly when Quicksilver jumped 50 feet into the air, tearing his flight belt off. The Russian government somehow got their hands on the suit and used it to aid, along with the Chinese government, in their invasion of the United States. The technology was fitted to one of their soldiers and was given the code-name Perun , the Slavic God of Thunder, to fit the theme of the powers the suit provided. The shape of the hammer was altered, but retained all of it's abilities. He was also given a Sickle to match the Hammer to add to his Soviet symbolism. The Russian and Chinese governments created a team of super-powered individuals to lead the invasion, called the Liberators , and Perun was placed on this team. From his holding cell, Thor commented in grief that someone has stolen the lightning. Thor remained in his cell until the invasion of America began, at which time a bright light shined on him, and Thor vanished from his cell after he called for his father. Thor appeared standing beneath Loki, his hair and true Godlike powers restored, and wielding replicas of his belt, harness and Mjolnir no longer requiring the use of the technology which simulated his original powers , challenging Loki to battle. During this battle he summoned an army of Asgardian warriors, which battled Loki's monster army. Finally he defeated Loki, who was sent back to Asgard. Thor, alongside Nick Fury and the rest of the new Ultimates battled the Squadron Supreme when they destroyed the roof of the . After the battle Thor used his hammer to teleport the helicarrier with the team to the Supremeverse. There he engaged Hyperion in combat, but was defeated by the former's superior speed. However, Thor gained the upper hand against Hyperion felling him with a huge bolt of lightning then severely beating him with Mjolnir. He also knocked out Zarda as she attempts to stop him beating Hyperion. He formed a romantic relationship with Valkyrie , who had mysteriously gained superhuman powers. He started speaking in a Shakespearean pattern, because with his godhood no longer in doubt he no longer felt he had to hide his true speaking patterns. He had a collection of weapons which were a gift from Odin forged by Ulik the troll. Thor aided the team when the Brotherhood of Mutants attacked their mansion. He later traveled to the Savage Land with the Ultimates to confront Magneto. He once again battled Magneto, but was quickly defeated and buried near the center of the Earth. Thor attempted to confront Magneto again, but Magneto used his powers to take his hammer from him and then left. Following this Thor begins using a sword. During battle practice, a huge wave covered the mansion. Thor survived, but Valkyrie was thrown all the way to Liberty island, where Thor found her dead. Thor traveled to Valhalla. There he found both Valkyrie and Captain America, and sacrificed himself to revive them. Thor remained in Valhalla. While a resident of Valhalla, among fighting the spawn of Hela, he demanded knowledge of a way to return to life, to which Hela offered a solution, she an heir to her throne. Thor holds up his end of the bargain and demands his return to Earth however Hela tells him that according to Odin's laws another must die, if he is to leave. Enraged, Thor states that it will be her death that will release him but Hela revealed that she was pregnant and asked Thor if he would kill his unborn child. This baffles Thor since the conception of the child occurred only the night before but Hela declares that time passes differently in Valhalla. Months after the Wave , Loki sought an opportunity to attack Midgard again. During this time, Thor was imprisoned in Valhalla and was seduced by Hela , saying she wanted a son. Thor gave in but demanded to be returned to Earth, but Hela informs him an Asgardian life must be taken for his to be returned. The New Ultimates fought in vain until Loki managed to kill Valkyrie, allowing the death needed for Thor to return to Earth. Enraged, Thor attacks Loki as well as the New Ultimates. Eventually Valkyrie, now serving Hela, appeared and slew Loki. She kissed Thor and convinced him that she was once human so in her honor he should continue protecting Earth. Thor then joins the New Ultimates and vows to once again be Earth's protector. Reed Richards returned to Earth and founded an organization called Children of Tomorrow , a group of evolved humans with the aim of dominating the world, building their base called the Dome. The Dome's interior ages at an accelerated rate compared to the outside world. Over years have passed inside the Dome, so their inhabitants evolved to perfect super-humans. The heroes were subdued by the enemies and some of them were killed, draining their powers. After examining Thor, Richards, now called the Maker, sent the Children for the source of power of Thor, leading them to Asgard. After killing every Asgardian God, the Children drained the power of Yggdrasil , leaving Thor powerless. Thor throws Mjolnir at the Master of Magnetism, but Magneto manages to stop it an inch from his helmet and throws it back at Thor, sending him through a wall. As he is idolized by Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm, he fraternizes with them to the point of ordering Carol Danvers to prepare a keg of beer for after the battle. Thor appeared as a minor character in an alternate timeline as the President of the United States due to time travel involving Skrull invaders. Following the Liberators' conquest of America, Thor is freed by Odin this is helped by Scarlet Witch using her mutant hex power to effect the probability of Thor regaining his power and restored to full power in time to battle a revealed Loki. There he engages Hyperion in combat, but is defeated by the former's superior speed. In Ultimate Power 7 Thor gains the upper hand against Hyperion , felling him with a huge bolt of lightning then severely beating him with Mjolnir. He also knocks back Zarda as she attempts to stop him from beating Hyperion. In Ultimates 3 Thor undergoes many changes making him closer to his mainstream counterpart. He is redesigned with a beard and a bulkier build. He becomes much more eager for battle and more vengeful. He has formed a romantic relationship with Valkyrie , who has mysteriously gained superhuman powers. He later travels to the Savage Land with the Ultimates to confront Magneto. He is then confronted by Hela , who forces Thor to battle Hela's army of fallen warriors to reach Valkyrie. Thor remained in the Ultimates when they were employed by Carol Danvers and battled Nick Fury's black-ops team codenamed the Avengers.
